The real question is why did the sun rise on the dark side of the moon when the moon is tidally locked to the earth’s rotation. Dropping him there should have been fine, except the writers didn’t understand (or care) about real world physics and had the sun rise on the moon for plot reasons. Not only is it scientifically inaccurate, but it also makes Superman look like a total idiot (as it occurs only a few a seconds after Superman leaves).

The studio tricked Christopher Reeve into coming back to play Superman by giving him a large salary, full creative control over the story, and the promise of a sufficient budget. What they failed to tell him was that they were in serious financial trouble and could not afford the budget they agreed to. The film went into production with significantly less money to work with. As a result, special effects suffered. Many shots that were not completed made it into the finished film. The studio regulated the film's run time to under 2 hours so that it could play on as many theater screens as possible. To meet this demand a significant portion of scenes essential to the plot were cut from the film. Audiences knew something was not right when they saw the cheap cartoonish opening credits sequence. The film's budget was $17 million. The total box office take was $36.7 million. If you factor in marketing, it basically barely broke even and is considered a flop. Reeve credited the disaster for nearly ruining his career and I'm sure he regretted agreeing to be a part of it. It is sad that his last appearance as Superman ended so horribly. The horse-riding accident in 1995 killed any chance of him getting redemption in another Superman film.

The original Superman film was a classic. Then there are movies that don't have good initial reviews but became classics. And finally there are some movies that are so bad they become cult classics. Then there are scifi and fantasy movies that are cheesy but still fun for nerdy types. Then there is this movie. Absolutely nothing redeemable about it. Worse comic book movie ever made. Superman is a popular comic character yet this film was so epically terrible it managed to kill the film franchise for 20 years

Worst villain in DC movie history. Dude wasn’t even talking using his own voice, that was Gene Hackmans voice dubbed over to sound like he was talking. Should have been Bizarro instead. Reeve playing Bizarro fighting himself would have probably still been terrible but a step up from this garbage.
