I first heard this song when i was a senior in high school in SanAntonio (1960's). I had just been told i was not eligible to be in the school music clubs because i was Catholic (this was a public school). I was sad because i had in my prior high school been in a group that was Texas State Champions for three years in a row-i could SING and now i was not considered acceptable because of my religion. The there was a school talent show. A young 14 year old black girl sang THIS SONG to an audience of over 5k (this was a BIG school)--and she totally blew the roof off that dump. I just GOT IT--the whole scene, the depth of spiritual truth in the song and HER rendition was even BETTER THAN NANCY'S and her version is GREAT TOO. That little girl was told SHE could not be in the school music clubs because she was BLACK. I learned that day that bigotry is not about the color of ones skin, but about the color of one's heart-ie. STUPIDITY vs. LOVE. God Bless All!
