My husband's mother used to sing this song in the vaudeville theatre in Glasgow and the whole city clapped and cheered her. She had a beautiful voice and used to sing for extra cash as she was very poor and her husband was away at war. This was during WWII. As I hear this it makes me want to cry. My husband died 15 years ago and I love and miss him so much!

What a beautiful story! My husband also died (he was originally from Scotland)...I feel that both husbands are with us when we hear this song--and are waiting for us!
@jcavilia111 ай бұрын
My condolences for your loss. Even though it was 15 years ago, I'm sure you feel the absence of your husband deeply. I learned to sing this song about 15 years ago to sing it for my wife on our anniversary. I certainly didn't sing as beautifully as this singer, but I think my wife was touched. She died almost exactly one year ago, much too young at age 70 and still as beautiful as the first day I saw her 50 years ago. This is now one of the special songs I sing in remembrance of her. Peace to you.

@@unterwant Well, it's because God gave her talent and she worked hard to perfect it. My love was like a red, red rose, but I didn't sound nearly this beautiful when I sang this song to her. I think she loved it, though, because she loved me - lucky me. She's gone now, and hearing this song brings sad tears of loss, and happy tears of gratitude and sweet memories of our years together.

I have a dream about red rose painting, it was light red background of that painting, with two red roses on it, and I'm really remembering the something written on that painting, year 1942 or 1962, I can't remembered all of my dream but the red colour is so bright, so natural, and so beautifull living.When i woke up in the morning, I remebered my dream about red rose, and I look at google to find the meaning of that, and I found a red, red rose poet who's written by Robert Burns, the scottishman. I didn't know anything about scottish song, or scottish poet, I never knew that, never. Last Novermber 2015, my heart is belong to the scottishman who is giving me the true love that I keep with me forever. Life is so weird and beautiful.

No doubt he would, but he borrowed some lines from earlier writers for his lyrics, and this tune is not the one he chose for his original setting - which was a fiddle tune by Niel Gow (Major Graham's Strathspey). It never became as popular as this traditional tune, 'Low down in the broom' which was chosen later by R.A. Smith.
