This song is one of the most beautiful works of the great Scottish poet Robert Burns. I first heard it many years ago, but it acquired special new significance about 30 years ago after I learned to sing it and accompany myself on the guitar so I could sing it to my wife on our anniversary. About 8 months ago I said "fare thee well, my only luve" for the last time after 47 years of marriage. After her passing I cannot sing or hear the song without tears, but they are tears of happiness at the memories, and gratitude for the miracle of having her beside me for so long, as well as tears of sadness for her absence. "As fair art thou, my bonnie lass, sae deep in love am I." I will be in love with her as long as I live.
