I think my favourite part about these bloopers is the fact that Carole Lombard makes a 180 degree change in personality when she breaks character!!

Carole Lombard truly was the best comedienne who ever graced films. Her presence was already incredibly down-to-earth, but these outtakes nonetheless make her appear even more human. And we finally get to hear her swear!

She wanted to win the respect of directors and crewmembers, who shunned her earlier in her career because she was a woman, so her brothers taught her some swear words and how to be tough on them. Worked like a charm!

I love it, if only because it shows the difference between the actor at work, and the actor, as an ordinary everyday person; Carole Lombard ringing-the-changes on two different personas, as she devours her assignment as the consummate professional she was...and at such an early age, too ! As for William Powell, on or off camera, he is the ultimate unassuming, kind and caring human being, as both of his featured *liquid gold* bloopers readily evince.

Carole Lombard is one of the persons I'd like to meet. I don't really know why, but she just looks like a smile-creater person. And I mean in and out of the set. Isn't it a shame that she died so young.?

The outakes give us a glimpse of the camaraderie the actors had for each other. There's something about watching old b & w movies that makes it more special. Yes cocaine, pills, and sex was around back then and people would swear and smoking was allowed everywhere. We tend to forget that in the 1930's and the world back then was in color in real life. For example, watching color reels taken during WWII has a different effect when viewing then watching most WWII footage filmed in b& w, if what I typed makes any sense.

I wonder what you mean by "clean." They couldn't say anything explicit about all sorts of subjects, but they still managed to put in lots of "dirt" between the lines. As long as you didn't get it, it doesn't count?

I often wondered what swear words or phrases they might've used. After all, they used now-antiquated terms like "swell" and "sore", so I wondered if their swearing was also antiquated, but they're not. I sure as hell recognized all of those.

@sky0725 - Lombard grew up with brothers and was known to "curse like a sailor" :) I think Gable both liked it and wished she wouldn't ;-) CL didn't take any crap (or get on anyone's couch) from anyone in Hollywood and she blazed a lot of trails that people don't know about. She was quite a dame.

This surprises me. I'd heard that you never see outtakes from Universal films because the blooper footage was always left undeveloped so it could be stripped of silver halides for recycling. Maybe that policy was started later on. Glad that this survived.

Was she not the *"Most Adorable Beautiful Professional Star - EVER"* !?! Totally can see these 2 married - (Didn't quite get her and Gable) Adore hee work and know "we could easily have been BFF's - her Higher Self - (Spirit) - just SHINES through her in every film. And I adore her confidence - though be it - shaken on occasions, never Professionally - only Personally shaken - I identify with this experience - mine due to a childhood the was overcast with a Narcissist Parent Dad a CoDependent Mom (Mom had a tinge of Narcissist Personality Disorder Traits as well - could enjoy baiting and teasing to stimulate a level of emotional abuse - knew the technique of Manipulating, and both had a placing self-first generally - always using their restaurant business as a "I've got to work" excuse not to be present for child's needs - school events, social events, home time. I literally raised my younger sibbling from age was 4 - 12 (I was 12 - 18/19). These childhoods turn out a plethora of Personality Disorders - I count myself lucky to have had Aunts and Grandma in my early years - and yet I too became a CoDependent - each varies to some degree - and I likely overi ndulged my child with time, attention, and praise - in an effort to raise him with good self concept and balanced confidence. Too bad they didn't establish the Cluster B - Personality Disorders Concept for understanding, diagnosising, and treating, until the 1990's, one of my Majors was Sociology and I would have truly benefited from the realization and understanding - and possibly have avoided great emotional pain and been able to recognize my own shortcomings - and attempted to establish Balance and Boundaries. It came later in life but I'm so very Greatful I came to understand and use Conscious Thought Application to gain a much greater balance in my personality and thinking. If someone happens upon this Comment - Thought Sharing - and happens to recognize any of the insecure traits or highly manipulative and abusive traits of the Narcissist - and should desire some direction on these subjects, I chair an International Group for Victims of Narcissist Personality Disorder on Facebook - Search under Victims of Narcissist Abuse NPD and request admittance - and through this venue one may ask questions and receive available direction in a Confidential Manner (Using Mssgnr PM) Bully Behavior is Narcissist Behavior (Narcissist Personality Disorder, Sociopath PD, Borderline PD, Antisocial PD, Severe OCD, etc - all fall in the Cluster B and are a potential highly Abusive area. If you find yourself "Chronically People Pleasing" and/or have/are a Victim of Child Sexual Abuse, Sexual, Physical" and/or Emotional Abuse - reach out to a *Professional that specializes in the area of Narcissist Personality Disorder* - REPORT ABUSE There are only 2 ways to beat a Narcissist at their cruel Drama Game : Refuse to Play - Achieve your Goals NEVER CONFIDE IN A BULLY/NARCISSIST and NEVER TELL THEM YOUR HEART'S DESIRES They will use the info against you and they will contrive to derail any efforts towards your goals. Lastly NEVER LEAVE Children or Animals in their care of home alone with them - *THEY WILL ABUSE THEM* The Abusers of this world are ALL Narcissists - PERIOD and they next t9 NEVER seek treatment nor does it work for them in 98% of recorded treatment outcomes. It can only be changed during childhood and with long term inpatient programs of Behavioral Modification. They will lie and pretend to change to keep their victims victims - the have "a need to feed" - their unquenchable hunger for "gaining enjoyment through the suffering of people and animals" They are SADISTIC - and Vamping is a term often used for their evoking the emotional energy of another. The Polar opposite of an Empath - one whom can "feel the pain of others" They only "Feel" if the get stuck with a needle - they do not have the capacity/functioning of "feeling Emotions" - with the exception of anger, prejudice, or hate. This can be Diagnostically measured using a Brain Scan. Be alert to the identifying the behaviors of NPD, Google Search and read the DSM IV Criteria - this is used by Professionals in diagnosing. Balanced Self-Love is required to have a truly firm foundation, this is necessary for developing into a Mature Individual and to experience ones Potentials as well as having balanced relationships of all versions and to enjoy happy partnerships. Be true to self then you can fully experience shared love. Peace be with you. ❤

Interesting, it seems to me, macsnafu, if only because what emerges is a much more mature, dynamic and firmly-focussed, extremely *adult* person, in contrast to the almost infantile one she is projecting (albeit, as directed), in the *Godfrey* script; one who is *daffy* and something of a romantic idle dreamer, which Miss Lombard, in reality, was anything but. The thing I find most incredible though, is that, at this time, this seasoned trouper was barely 30 years old !
