One of many things why I like Vince is how genuinely anti-consumerist he is. His house is full of things he fixed. But not just that, look at his phone. For how long he has this S10+? Five years? And he’s rocking it and even gets a new leather case for it - there are no plans for a replacement! Kudos, Vince!

I have mine attached to a smart plug next to my desk. If I am home, if it gets above 24°C, and it's not past 22:00 my fan comes on automatically. 😁 Cheap and cheerful.

Failure in these is from the bearings drying out and the motor over heating, while struggling to turn. I have reoiled a few of these several times to keep them going. Ideally, you would want to regrease the bearings, as that would last much longer than the 3 in 1 oil. I replaced the few I had with some slightly higher end vornado fans, which have greater airflow and are significantly quieter.

Because if the gummed up bearings, the motor couldnt spin and took excessive current because if it. That caused it to heat up, and the thermal fuse popped. I've fixed numerous fans by taking them apart and cleaning and oiling the bearings. Sometimes it lasts, sometimes it doesnt. Your mileage may vary

@@CamelCasee You can try different kinds. Sewing machine oil or motor oil for example. Bicycle chain oil works too, but it's very thick and it can take a while for the fan to get up to speed. Avoid WD40 and the likes, since they dry up very quickly.

I used to solder those thermal fuses, using a little trick, wrap it in a strip of tissue paper (a bunch of turns), and make it tight with adhesive tape, get the paper wet, and put it in the freezer for an hour or two. Then solder the wires quickly, and remove the tissue paper. Also, the motor bushings are lubricated with oil from factory, there’s a felt washer around it, which you have to soak in machine or 3 in 1 oil , the vibration of the motor slowly releases the oil. When they go dry, the motor locks up. Those devices are cheap for a reason...

@fredfarnackle5455
@fredfarnackle5455 Ай бұрын
Those types of motors use sintered bronze bushes as bearings. They are impregnated with lubricant at the factory before assembly to the motor. Usually that lubricant lasts for many, many years - maybe in this case they missed that end bearing or didn't give it enough and it ran dry, hence the discolouration on the shaft. The oil you put on it will last for ages as it will soak back into the bushes.

Another great repair! For your question; the easiest way to crimp thermal fuses is get a "U shape copper crimp set" or "u shape copper buckle set" from ebay or Amazon. You need a crimper that folds over the upright 'wings' on the connectors. This is the same type of crimper that works for car Lucar spade connectors, but needs to go quite small. If you have a circular type hex crimper for ferrules, you can use ferrules with the plastic bit cut off, or appropriate bits of small diameter copper or brass tube as used in model making. Its a ton easier than trying to solder and hoping you manage to shunt the heat away. Hope this helps.

I have two of these fans and they're great! My guess is this was used during drywall construction/painting seeing that amount of dust. I'm curious if there is a date code on the fan anywhere? I bet they bought it and swapped their old bad one into it the box. My prediction is the 3-1 oil will not last long. It looked to me like there was some sort of grease in their end where the slits were. You will likely need to put some high temp grease in it. The fan probably overheated because the grease gummed up from the all the dust.

There are felt pads around both ends of the motor armature if you alcohol clean them you have to replace the oil the felt pads hold the oil that keeps the motor lubed.
@Mymatevince

I seen them and was wondering what they were for. I thought initially they were washers full of dust, but no, it was felt. Luckily I did put 3 in 1 oil around that area, but that was just luck. Thanks for letting me know 👍👍👍

Great job Vince, when you take it apart again to put the correct thermal fuse in I'd pack that back bearing with blue grease rather than 3 in 1 oil, it'll last indefinitely then. As for your crimping problem use bootlace ferrules, you can get them with or without insulation but in any case its easy enough just pull the plastic off them if you don't require it. you can get crimping tools for them but some just get by with pliers.

It's such a simple design. These consumer fans are such a high E-waste item. It's unbelievable how fixable these little fans are. Just a little bit of cleaning and some sewing machine oil, you'll easily get some more life out of it. Those shaded pole motors will last a long time. They just need to be oiled and cleaned routinely. Those fans are notorious for accumulating hair and dust. Another good video buddy.

Well, if it was Amazon, they'll accept returns of things that aren't fit for a dingo's breakfast. I bought an RC car and the extended warranty, so I drove like a bat out of hell for three straight weeks, broke bumper, air splitter, rolled over and shredded the body, had to cut the lexan body due to lowering the car, finally shredded the spur gear, the whole thing was looking well jacked up, and so I tried to activate the warranty for a new spur gear. Amazon rep said I can't get warranty service until after 30 days, so just send the car back. I told her how sorry of a state the car was in, and she said it was fine. Now I personally would likely have cleaned the asbestos and kilo of dead skin off the fan before I boxed it, for my cleanliness sake if nothing else... It's hard to fathom the Amazon return policy because there was that guy who was "returning products" to the tune of 10 or 20 grand over a period of months, and the boxes were just filled with pieces of brick (for weight)

You mentioning asbestos reminds me of how when I was still new in the office where I work now back in 2019, and the IT guy asked me to help him to drill some holes into the wall to affix a new pinboard. After we'd been finished, he told me: "We are not supposed to drill holes here because of asbestos. But I don't believe into that stuff." 😡 So yes, it's a problem here in Germany, too.

Hey Vince. Great way to fix a thermal fuse in a winding is to restore the connection with 3 amp fuse wire soldered with 100 degrees low melt solder. In fact a permanent thermal fuse is exactly that. In my opinion 115° is way too high given the fact that the thing is mounted on a plastic mount

3 and 1 Oil makes an additional product "engineered for 1/4hp or larger motors." I think I'm on my 8th or 9th discarded/dumpster fan that's been brought back to life with the thermal fuse fix (but once in a while it's just a cleaning/re-oil that's needed). The larger box-fans work a lot better by making simple custom wooden feet that prevent tip-over. And my every-day use fan is a grey 10" box rescued from the garage-sale free pile - that reminds me of the successful fix every single time it turns on.

These are excellent little fans with a lot of power, especially at the price. I have the same thing (more or less) (HT-900E) which I bought in June 2020. It has served me well for over 4 years; admittedly, only in summer. Nonetheless, at €32 at the time, I am happy with it and have nothing to complain about. Considering the “dog sound” and how stiff your fan was when you were trying to spin it, I would put a bet on the motor getting jammed and therefore overheating, thus the thermal fuse blew.

Regarding the crimping of thermal fuses , I have successfully used stainless steel, 2.2mm 'Wire Trace Crimps' (sold by Amaz** for £2.99 in a pack of 50 as a fishing item ) and crimped them with a standard ferrule crimping tool (the type with a hole which closes up in the middle of the jaws - which I think you may have?)`. I operate the crimper more than once, twisting the piece of work a couple of times to get a tight and secure hold all around). Before using this method, I tested with resistors by subjecting to significant heat, pull tests, high voltage and current ; everything held firm. I have crimped a couple of thermal fuses with these over the years without issue.

Honeywell does everything from desk fans to HVAC to parts for attack helicopters. You should make a video of installing the fuses and tying up any other loose ends from this series (after you’re done with the advent series)

In my experience all Fans eventually stops working and require greasing. Every Year I have to disassemble my Fan, clean it and grease it because it won't spin or spin too slow..

That's not a loose fan motor. You gotta take out the screws holding the motor together and putr some oil in the felt pad oil holding things on each end cap. All of these motors have issues like this if you don't oil them yourself.... they only last a couple years.

The cause of the fuse popping was the fan bushings being gummed up with dust, I used to fix fans for fun and its a very common issue. ive taken three of that same fan out of the ewasye now and all three where squealing. just alittle lube and all good again!

Asbestos was widely used in the building industry in Australia, in cement sheets used for roofing, fencing and walls, making renovating or demolishing old houses potentially hazardous. The sad story of the town of Wittenoom in Western Australia is worth reading. An old neighbour of mine worked in Wittenoom and died of mesothelioma, the cancer resulting from exposure to asbestos fibres.
