Day 9 of the MMV Christmas Advent Fixathon Challenge, 24 fixes in 24 days!!
Different item each day.
Join me in this Christmas Special where we will attempt to fix a faulty item everyday in the run up to Christmas.
Should be fun!
Remember that this is just for entertainment and I am not an expert in these repairs. The processes in the video may not be the best way, the correct way or the safest way to fix these things. I do love fault finding and trying to fix broken things, so I hope that comes across in these videos.
Many thanks, Vince.

Quick question please. Is it ok to put in a thermal fuse of a HIGHER amp rating like this 16 amp one in place of the 10 amp one if the temperature rating is the same. The internet has mixed views on this. If amp rating is important (too high NOT too low) why does the same thermal fuse have different ratings for different voltages, like the G4 series Microtemp are rated at 10 Amps at 250V ac and 15 amps at 120V ac. If it was that critical wouldn't they make 2 thermal fuses, one at 250v and one at 120v. I was under the impression the temperature was the important part and the amp rating as long as it isn't too small wasn't critical. Please reply if you know the answer. Thank you.
@ZZtop-gg3lu
@ZZtop-gg3lu 4 күн бұрын
I already answered that question in your previous pinned comment, but it's gone now For the G4 series, the stated 10A is the maximum breaking current it can safely break So it is ok to replace a thermal fuse with one that has a higher breaking current The voltage indicated is the maximum working voltage, you can use it on lower voltages, just the maximum breaking current changes As you see for the G4 series, it can break 24VDC only at 5 Amps As you said, the thermal fuse (TCO) disconnects at the stated temperature only, not on the current rating From the documentation: Rated Voltage: The maximum voltage that can be applied to the circuit in which the thermal cutoff is used. Rated Current: The maximum current that the thermal cutoff is rated to interrupt at the rated voltage.

@ZZtop-gg3lu Thank you ZZ, I appreciate that. I did heart your previous comment, but some of the other comments coming in were getting derogatory to the original commenter so I un-pinned the comment. I'd like to keep it polite in the comments section if at all possible. Your original helpful comment will still be there, as long as the original commenter doesn't delete his comment. Thanks again 👍👍👍

The amp rating is how much the fuse can safely break without arcing or flashover as it blows - which could weld the fuse back into the conducting state. The voltage rating is both to do with electrical separation once it has blown as well as being in conjunction with the amp rating to give an acceptably low level of internal heating of the fuse during use (Volts x Amps). In other words too much voltage and current through the fuse's own internal resistance could make it blow regardless of external heat. In general when replacing the temp value must always be same as original but voltage and current rating can be higher than the device actually needs. The AC rating of most devices is shown as roughly half that of DC as AC voltage is normally the average value where the peaks are (Voltage x Square root of 2). This is why recified mains in a switching power supply often gives about 340v on the capacitors and not simply 240v - the 340v are the peaks. Hope this helps.

This is a brilliant series of fixes, Vince. I think there are people out there who just don't realise how much work and skill goes into making videos. It's hard work and you earn your money, since you not only have to do the fixing, and film it, but also explain it as you go (the best part) and then there's all the editing. My own videos are just done as a hobby, using a mobile phone and Microsoft Clipchamp, but even so I found it was considerably more difficult and involved more work than I'd originally thought. Keep up the excellent work!

Absolutely loved the video vince! Ive been reading comments and i honestly cannot handle the stupidity of a few people. Yes, they do have good points, but they have a horrendous way of making them. They dont seem to be getting the core and essence of what makes your channel "My Mate Vince"!! Yet you go out of your way to make your point and stand your ground and also learn from the negativity. At the end of the day, it is your channel Vince, and the people who love your content will stay and the people who dont, will brood and leave, thats just how it is. Many people love your content (including me), and don't find it boring. Love this series and I am eagerly waiting for more repairs!! Nice fix and interesting item. Looks a bit like fancy car interior pre-heater for winter, a fan with heater element. The broken piece of plastic suggest though it's not intended to be used in car environment, as it has to be strong enough to withstand all vibrations etc. inside a car. I wonder why some people don't watch videos like this fully, it's like if they were reading a repair manual, or a scientific fact book about something, they'd just read some part of it, and miss the important bits they didn't bother to read. Have seen some viewers even complain about something they missed because they didn't watch the entire video :D

Epoxy has it's uses indeed (but not always). I highly recommend some two part putty epoxy as well. It's super useful. For example you could have created strengthening base around that broken standoff. US here, "JB Weld" brand here makes a variety of such two part putties, surely you can source something similar. Trust me, once you have it to hand you'll see uses. Especially on some of the broken internal plastic posts and stuff.

Hi Vincent, got a tip for you regarding reinforcing super glued plastic Parts. I have seen you multiple times say a glued repair won't last. Glue as normal then add some extra glue over the join and sprinkle baking powder on the glue, it forms a hard plastic in seconds. You can keep adding more glue and baking powder to suit. It is also possible to slowly form plastic lugs etc by this method. (Baking powder is also known as baking soda in USA etc) Hope this helps you.

Just a note on the FLIR readings: Since you're measuring the metal parts of the heat sink, which is a reflective surface, this leads to unreliable readings. Basically, those 200°C may be a bad reading, which you could confirm by putting a K-type thermocouple on the heat sink and comparing its (reliable) readings to the FLIR camera.

We've got a couple of those heaters and they're surprisingly reliable considering they probably knock them out in the factory for less than you had to pay for the pack of 5 fuses when you think we can buy them here for less than £15

For plastic parts try one of the plastic model making glues. Humbrol/Revell/Airfix. Have recently fixed a fridge door milk holder with a few cracks and split bottom section ,still going strong.

For gluing ABS you can use MEK solvent or use PVC pipe weld which will also work. Quick is to use CA glue with the activator. or UV cure adhesives. A trick you can use is apply a good splash of CA on the joint and then sprinkle some bicarbonate of soda over the glued joint and the CA will set instantly like cement.

That broken piece of plastic was the perfect candidate to reinforce it with baking soda and superglue.

~14:00 The thermal fuse fixings are easier to replace if you have a simple, cheap fabric eyelet crimper: remove the existing eyelets, form the ends ow the thermal fuse leads around some suitable diameter to get the circle, then simply crimp a new 'eyelet' onto the board. Obviously, the eyelets used should be copper or a similar bare metal, not chrome-covered plastic (or aluminium) As you said, super (CA) glue is excellent for quick bonds, esp for materials that have some moisture-absorption such as organics or some rubbers (as well as skin/flesh, its original application), but next to useless for a more permanent bond between rigid non-permeable materials: for that, epoxy (or plastic weld in this case) is the preferred method for permanent bonding, but 'hot snot' may well have been just as good as it allows for a small amount of flex (to allow for thermal expansion/contraction of the element/backplane/metal grille)

you could also use a mechanical connection to fix the broken plastic such as a Heat welder using the metal staples that melt the plastic and fuse it around the metal staples although it does require a bit of finesse because you can go through the plastic. was great to watch.

Hey Vince, just an idea. You could set up a little test with one of these thermal fueses to see how long you can spend soldering onto a leg before the temperature causes it to break. Or better yet there are rapid cooling sprays specific to electronics that should eleviate any worries. Keep up the good work, missing the roller series.

I weld plastic parts with an old soldering iron may help you instead of super glue. Or try an activator spray with your glue.

Fun videos Vince. And I like your resolution to use epoxy instead of super glue as I've never had any luck with it either.

Have you tried reinforcing superglue by adding bicarbonate of soda around the glued item, and pouring more glue over it? Goes solid immediately, and MUCH stronger than the superglue on its own.... Good fix! I am using an identical fan which is still working about 25 years after I bought it. Thermal fuse has never popped, but poor wire connections have needed cleaning from corrosion! Keep up the good work. Your perseveration with the switch positions was worth it, to explain to us mere mortals exactly what the switch was supposed to be doing.

I have the same heater with a different badge. It works well in my bathroom, but the lead gets very warm. My guess is the penny pinching manufacturer used some sort of alloy for the mains lead.

Try a bit bicarb soda with superglue. Now it gets hot so take care. I advise a play before you want to do something you want to glue. also you can add oxide colour to your mix to weld computer hinges etc if you dont want white.

Before using any glue, check if the plastic is ABS. In that case you can use aceton to weld it. The connection is than as strong as it was original.

mitre bond is the best super glue, comes with an accelerator spray so it actually cures in seconds, well better than poundland superglue and lasts ages as long as you keep the nozzle clean, otherwise the lid can stick on permanantly

Hi Vince. Buy mitre glue instead of superglue. I think it might be the same, but it comes with an accelerator and sets instantly when it’s sprayed on to the glue.
