I loved how you mentioned what worked and what sort of worked throughout your fabulous trip. The fabrics used in your garments are beautiful and look so lovely on you. I want to sew easy care pants and tops for comfort and some I can dress up and also lend to more casual occasion dressing. I am retired, old but still want to be 'in style'. Your 'silk' top is luscious and the hints you gave for sewing and care are gratefully received. Years ago, a lady I worked with sewed her own wardrobe and always looked fabulous. She purchased 'silk' fabric (I think it was raw silk), washed it in the washing machine, and sewed skirts, capes, jackets for herself. I have to say it scares me to death to think about it. I just went to my 'stash' and fount a remnant piece of silk. I just might have to try it. I think I will set some goals and patterns to go with them. Thanks again.

Thanks so much for your kind words! It's important to feel good about ourselves, even if we're not dressing for anyone but the person we see in the mirror! Gosh, I can't imagine living in t-shirts and yoga pants. It makes me a bit sad. Have you used your silk remnant? You know that you deserve to wear and sew nice things! And I have heard that raw silk is really easy to work with - not that I've tried 😊

I wash and dry all silk before I sew. It does change the hand but it is also gives me forever a washable garment. It is also great for traveling bc you can hand wash it in the sink and drip dry it.

Janine, your travel wardrobe is just lovely! I think you did a great job of mixing and matching. I love your Rhapsody blouse, one of my favorite patterns, so versatile. And that paisley top is just gorgeous, but I’d add a second layer underneath at the bottom, maybe 2.5-3”, rather than a ruffle. Planning an Alaska cruise next year, you’ve given me so many ideas!😊

I lo e the i formation you have shared here and your careful attention to details. I’d like to suggest McCalls 8366 for the jacket to make to go with your joggers. I haven’t made it it, but the line drawings are really nice and there are some interesting seams that would provide nice definition and body shaping

Loved the alternate fix for a too short top! When we got back from vacation at the end of Feb I had a visit with my doc who gave me some scary news about cholesterol and diabetes. I decided I needed to do something asap. I love to eat and I hate the gym. So I’ve done 3 things - cut out sugar (which I no longer miss), brush my teeth right after dinner and eat nothing more until the next day, and walk 45 mins to an hour a day. Other than that I eat everything I want/love and don’t feel deprived. Happy to report I’ve lost 10 pounds so far and need to do some alterations on my wardrobe. Your capsule is great and I’m in awe of anyone who can go on a cruise with a carry on lol!

Rhonda, I'm sorry you got scary news but WELL DONE for sticking to your plan! It's really tough to change habits, even when we're told that we need to do so. A few years ago I did a plan where I cut out sugar and didn't snack in the evening and that absolutely worked. And I do love to walk, it's a matter of prioritising that time. Thank you for sharing that - maybe it's the kick that I need to make the needed changes. ❤️ You know the biggest problem with taking just a carry on? There's no room for shopping! 😁

@@JanineSews I found once I was a week or two in I didn’t have too much trouble sticking to the plan. And it helps to have a hubby who doesn’t try to get me to join in his snackathons lol. And no shopping on a trip - geez, that’s harder than sticking to a diet plan!!

What great tops & pants for vacation & what an awesome vacation. Unfortunately my sewing machine bit the dust and to repair it was too much money. So I ordered a new one I can’t wait to get it. In the meantime I’ve been doing a major dusting and working on padding up my dress form. As soon as I get my new machine I won’t be on vacation or staycation I’ll be on sewcation.

Wonderful update on your trip and trip wardrobe! Lovely pieces! So glad you were able to travel light in a carry on. Your planning certainly paid off and you learned a lot about how to get the best silhouette from your outfits. Have you seen any videos by Sheila Alley? Her videos and books have been very helpful to me and I highly recommend her for dressing for your body shape. When I want a narrow silhouette on the bottom to go with a larger, bulkier top, I have enjoyed Talbots “slim leg ankle jeans” as leggings make my legs look like pencils. 😂. Maybe a slim leg ankle pant would fit into your Canadian summers too? I realize I’m just not cut out for leggings or wide leg pants, which create too much lower half😅. Anyway, Sheila (also Canadian) has helped me so much to figure out my best looks. Thought I’d mention her. 😊

Your wardrobe is wonderful Janine and so informative. It will help me plan for an upcoming cruise later in the year. The first 2 tops are such divine prints and look great on you. Lovely travel wardrobe. I do tend to bring dresses for dinner and then i wear at least twice. Also you don’t have to match anything to go with it just throw your dress on easy peezy. I am definitely going to look up that fabric store you bought your knits from it’s so hard to find good knits. Is the fabric you used for the lounge pants called jegging fabric on the website. In August we are going on a British Isles cruise leaving from Copenhagen with Holland America. Very excited. Do you have any tips for travelling to that side of the world? Thanks for the great video.
@JanineSews
@JanineSews Жыл бұрын
Thank you, Cindy! Dresses are a great solution for dinners on cruise ships. I did take another dress with me and just never wore it. People were VERY casual on this particular cruise. There were a couple of women who dressed up every evening in cocktail dresses and even gowns and they looked wonderful (and clearly I noticed!). Yes, the fabric at L'oiseau Fabrics is called "Jegging" fabric, and the SKU for the blue colour I used is 2530.014. That particular colour is sadly sold out, but they did have other colours. I'm tempted to buy more! We sailed to Norway at the end of August in 2019. The weather was absolutely gorgeous! Actually, it was quite warm when we were in the southern fjords although further north it cooled off a bit and it was definitely rainy. (That was a hot summer.) Copenhagen is further south so you likely won't have the chilly weather. I have heard that Holland America is quite an elegant cruise line so I expect people will be dressy! How exciting for you! Are you planning to sew anything new?

@@JanineSews thanks so much for responding 😀 i am planning and have sewn a few things already. The elodie wrap dress and the shelby dress. I am on a sewing week at my cottage and just made a couple pairs of pj bottoms up next the gilbert top. I figure during the day i will wear pants and tops. Bringing layers. I think i may make the lodi dress in a black ponte for a gala night with a sparkly top and the estuary skirt for some casual piece that i could wear out in the day also. We bought the laundry package so i am planning to use it. I have noticed too how many Europeans wear dresses and trainers out and about during the day or leggings under their dresses. Your right we need to embrace lol. Have a great day and i do hope the fires out there get under control soon.

Thank you for another fun video, Janine. You were so smart to think in terms of a capsule for your vacation. While you and I have different shapes, we share the attribute of fuller here vs. smaller there proportions. I might suggest the Itch to Stitch Mountain View pants as they have a princess seam for the back. It may give you the shaping you desire for your slim-fitting pants. Sure Fit Designs also has loads of videos re: front shaping for pants. Some completely unsolicited feedback from an armchair quarterback - the shirt you are wearing in the video, plus the cornflower blue top are particularly SPECTACULAR against your skin. I wonder if the dusty rose sweatshirt is too warm of a color? Your trip sounds wonderful.
@JanineSews
@JanineSews Жыл бұрын
Charlotte, thanks so much! I appreciate the arm chair critique! I agree that the dusty rose isn't quite right - maybe the colour isn't saturated enough? Although I have a lot of blue in my wardrobe, pink is my favourite so I keep looking for the 'right' pink - but maybe I should just stick with blue? I've only ever looked at Itch to Stitch tops so am intrigued by those pants and will definitely take a look at that pattern. I was mulling over pant patterns and shapes the other day and realised that it's not a case of just taking the Simplicity pants and slimming the legs - I need a different shape. So your suggestion is appreciated!

You said a couple of times ( I'm paraphrasing) that your clothes did go together but weren't outfits. If you were doing it again, what (same trip same weather conditions) would you change the amount of clothing? Change anything else? I'm taking a trip in 4&1/2 weeks for 10 nights. Any suggestions? Tips?😊
@JanineSews
@JanineSews Жыл бұрын
Janice, that's an excellent question. If I was to do it again, I would definitely have two jacket/pants sets. I needed a jacket that worked with the navy pants - then I could skip at least one sweatshirt. The black Ponte RTW pants and jacket were the right combination for evenings and I always felt polished when I wore those with a nice top, however, I was missing something similar for daytime. I seemed to live in tops and casual pants, there was nothing that elevated my daytime look. Not that it's essential to be 'dressed', but that's half the fun of travelling, isn't it? For the next trip in a similar climate, I would probably try to pack: 4 bottoms (jeans, 2 pr day pants or capris, 1 dressy pants, or skirt), 2 jackets or toppers in fabric the same as pants, 6 tops (4 for day, 2 for evening), and a couple of dresses. What ate up space in my suitcase were the things I threw in last minute, thinking that I 'might' need them. There was the dress, the skirt, the tights for under the dress and skirt, high heels, and three huge scarves thinking it would be snowing - 🤣
