Lost in the Pond

In this latest episode of #RememberingAmerica, I take a look back at my first big visit to the state of Michigan. Since the majority of my experience of the Wolverine State comprises just Ann Arbor, where do YOU think a Brit like me should go on his next visit?

If you ever get a chance, before you die, head to Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore near Traverse City, MI. Maybe rent a cabin in Glen Arbor for a week, It's by far the most beautiful site on lake michigan, and possably in all the great lakes. this gem of the north is full of Vinyards, huge gold sandy dunes, beautiful beaches, lighthouses, islands, local beer/wine, hot sun, and cool breezes that smell of fresh cherries. its paradise man, and not that far at all from chicago. just take a train from union station to kalamazoo(3.5hrs), then rent a car and take us-131 north about 3 more hours and your there.

I went tubing down the Platte River once as a kid, all the way into Lake Michigan. We looked for Petoskey stones at the mouth of the river and watched one of the most spectacular sunsets I've seen to this day over the lake from the top of the dunes. First and only time I used a bottomless innertube, as I accidentally drifted too close to a cluster of seaweed and was bitten/pinched on the ass by an unseen river creature. It wasn't a stick or another person either, I saw bubbles heading away from me and there wasn't anyone else near us. 😂 Good times! And yes, Traverse City, smells incredible.

With your love of parks, you should go see Mackinac Island. Stay in one of the many B&B's on the island, rent mountain bikes and ride the British Landing rd to the top of the Island. Visit the site of one of the first conflicts of the war of 1812.... or just go and eat fudge

Paka3 If you know how to ride, it's even better if you rent a horse. Reportedly Mission Point Resort on the island is haunted. I've stayed there a couple times but I never saw anything, so who knows?

Michigander here! Your temporal grammar made perfect sense to me as I am a fellow whovian XD. I’m in Grand Rapids (which you should totally visit, especially during ArtPrize), and as my grandparents live in Detroit, I can say that Detroit is definitely not as bad as it’s made out to be. In fact, the city is working very hard to heal itself and start growing again. Speaking of growing, GR is growing perhaps faster than any other city in Michigan. If and when you visit, you’ll likely see a city that’s a lot different than it was just a few years back, and you’ll see a lot of construction cranes in the downtown area. Oh and we also have Millennium Park here in GR which is one of the largest urban parks in the nation, rivaling NY’s Central Park.

There's a place near Greyling called Hartwick Pines. It's an old logging camp. It has a few of the old trees left before the 1800s people bloody chopped them all down. There are some big old trees, it takes more than 2-3 people to circle them. I recall it's very peaceful in the woods. If you were driving up to Mackinac, it's easy to stop there. I want to go on vacation now....too bad i'm skint, as my friend from Yorkshire would say! [dead broke]

Veronica Haynie My aunt lives in Grayling. It's almost another world. I often wonder how beautiful it must have been once, before people had at it. Watch out for deer though, they can be deadly. Oh, and black bears. But mostly...deer. 🤤
@veronicahaynie1394
@veronicahaynie1394 6 жыл бұрын
I once heard a country music song about some deer hunters....they went up North every year for 20 years and basically sat in a cabin drinking, then one day they sent a guy to the beer store for more beer and he hit a deer with his car and that was the first time in 20 years they got a deer ....hilarious song, don't know who did it.
@randomrainbow4479
@randomrainbow4479 6 жыл бұрын
Lol That is precisely why they are so dangerous too. If you don't watch constantly for them and have lightning speed reaction time you're gonna wreck the deer, your car, and even if you manage to walk away unscathed, your pants probably won't. 😂

Basically, if you visit Michigan you should see the Great Lakes. Detroit is great, and the food is amazing. If you're ever there you should get Buddy's Pizza (the original detroit style pizza), a proper Coney Island, and/or Green Dot Stables. And it's always fun to go to a Wings, Tigers, or Lions game. ANd the DIA is surprisingly nice museum. But if you're going to see the Great Lakes you need to go to some of the dunes on Lake Michigan, either sleeping bear or silver lake. And you absolutely need to go all the way to Lake Superior. Maybe even go camping on Isle Royale. Lake Superior is definitely the greatest great lake. And maybe catch some walleye wherever you go. They are the best white fish there is.

You should see Lake Huron too. Port Austin is nice, it's in the thumb and has nice campgrounds and motels. It has a rocky shore....Lake Michigan on our side has a sandy shore The rocks roll westwards I guess. Wait til you put your feet into Lake Superior.... you'll get an ice cream headache instantly...... Cheerio!

The only reason I don't live in Michigan's U.P (Ya!) is that my entire family is found in MA and my home state N.H. We've talked before we have! The UP is unique in too many ways to start listing. Oh OK, I'll give you two. The people first and following close behind is that there is only one day that can really count as hot, stifling day of summer and it's somewhere in between July 1st and 31st. Imagine! No A/C need. Of course that will change if people continue to believe there is no such thing as climate change! Anyway take I 75 straight up across the Macinac (said as Macinaw) bridge to Sault Ste Marie - called The Soo. Turn left and drive as straight as you can to Duluth, MN. Don't let the magnificent sights along the southern shore of Lake Superior distract you. They 'll still be there for your return trip. Good luck!

I've never been to Michigan, except to flyover it once. I do very much enjoy the way you say Lansing, Laurence. To emphasize the Sing conjures images of stepping outside and finding everyone bursting into song, a la La La Land. But... I'm guessing... that... doesn't... happen?

Depends on how many students are around when you step out and how much alcohol they've consumed. Lansing is also a college town, home of MSU Spartans and if it's one thing Michigan college kids know how to do, it's drink. I stayed on campus once at a friend's dorm, and it was like stepping into a zombie movie. People stumbling around, yelling or mumbling (and singing!) unintelligibly at anyone in sight, bodies laying all over the place, face down in the snow...and that was on a Tuesday. Morning.
