As a kitchen designer in the US, it helps to hear feedback from people who have gone through the renovation process and the issues they have faced along this journey. I work with my clients to understand the entire space from flooring to molding and everything in between and so many people haven't thought about the cohesive approach to each element as they join together as a whole. The door latch issue was a surprise and a great tip for people looking at a streamlined design and the limitations of hardware. I love the woods you chose and it speaks to the entire space beautifully.

20:45 I think the countertop and cabinets look very good in the same thickness which is still slim I think you said 3/4 inch. So the mistake turned into a plus IMO - as if they had been thinner as previously planned it may have been less (not enough) substantial and sturdy for kitchen

I don't understand why integrated appliances are so insanely expensive in the US. The extra cost is pretty minimal on the other side of the pond, and it's pretty standard Absolutely beautiful kitchen!
@ProbablyWorthSharing4 күн бұрын
Thanks! For clarity, I’m in Canada, which is a separate country from the US. But in North America it is not common outside of luxury homes - I think many people don’t even know they have the option. IKEA kitchens here have compatibility with integrated appliances so that is definitely making them more accessible when people do renovations.
@Kevin_Rhodes4 күн бұрын
@@ProbablyWorthSharing Yes, I understand that you are in Canada. It's the same in the US. IKEA has the ONLY even remotely reasonably priced integrated refrigerator, and it's still 2X+ what they sell them for in Europe, and it's too small for most American households - you would really need two of them. Everything else is insane. Their dishwasher is also slightly cheaper - but it's also relatively speaking, crap with a rather loud decibel rating for the price. Dishwashers in particular are just silly-priced considering it HAS to be cheaper to make a dishwasher without the pretty panel on the front. I'm about to install my third IKEA kitchen in the new house I am building. Which is walnut and black, so with black lower cabinets I was able to get a matt-black Samsung dishwasher that is nearly a perfect match out of the box.I really wanted to go with integrated appliances, but it just was not in the budget. BTW - I went with a Frigidaire induction cooktop that has knobs! The only remotely reasonably priced one I could find for sale in the US, and it was still expensive. I'm with you on the horrible touch controls. Still in it's box awaiting the new house though, so I can't report on how good it is. Has decent reviews for the most part.

So great and informative! Thank you. I am curious how the anova steam combi oven is performing and if that could be a temporary cheaper addition for a condo.
@ProbablyWorthSharing9 күн бұрын
Thank you! On Anova, I have very mixed feelings. As a combi oven, it’s great. They discontinued the 1.0 which was affordable (mine was CAD$600 on sale) but the UI and controls are awful. They just released 2.0 which is CAD$1,900 (US$1,300), and it has a subscription fee, but the UI looks better. Both are massive, like 22” wide, 18” deep, 15” tall, but the interior is small. The Miele could fit a half sheet, Anova is 1/3 sheet. So it’s going to take up a huge chunk of counter space in a condo. At the lower price I would have said instant yes, at the new price you’re looking at 75% the costs to a built in appliance from F&P. I don’t know the other options on the market very well but there’s been a flood of them recently. I plan to make a video about all this in the new year once I finish my publishing my camping series.
@mdeeaonetwothree51624 күн бұрын
Ok, really beautiful kitchen. Considering the combi steam oven, but I’ll stick to my other cheaper appliances. Have a bottom end Miele semi integrated dishwasher. Works fine. Bosch induction Cook top. Tick. Rancilio Sylvia coffee machine. I think it’s 20 years old now.
@ProbablyWorthSharing4 күн бұрын
Thank you! Agree - the other appliances are not worth the upgrade unless you’re doing a replacement, and even then there’s great mid-range options on the market. Love an appliance that lasts 20 years!

Really appreciate this informative video.Regarding your pantry the tall, shallow shelving, how shallow are these please, what is the shelf depth? Thank you!
@ProbablyWorthSharing6 күн бұрын
Thanks! The shelves were 9.5” deep, that’s the most I could fit with the sliding door placement.
@tkj1075 күн бұрын
Even though the depth was restricted I think it’s a great idea to have a shallow pantry. And the smoked glass doors add a really lovely touch. I’ve been trying to create a small kitchen design for years now, this is inspiring! You're saying "bring back knobs" but you opted out of knobs/handles on your cabinets which created problems with functionality. Nice video by the way...
@ProbablyWorthSharingКүн бұрын
I don’t hate the push to open drawers the way I hate the touchscreen cooktop, I would like to try them again with the better Blum hardware (soft close) to see if that’s any better. Having said that, I could have done the same kitchen design with a hidden groove under the 3/4” horizontal trim to use them as handles (same for vertical trim on fridge/freezer). We’ll see where I land when I finish building my new house in 2-5 years!

Beautiful cabinetry! What type of portable steam oven do you recommend? Did you get your money back on your investment, how wowed were the future buyers about the appliances l, did they even know what they are?
@ProbablyWorthSharing6 күн бұрын
Thanks! Great questions. I have the Anova Precision 1.0, they just replaced it with a more expensive model (2.0) I haven't tried using (the 1.0 is now discontinued). It's "countertop" but its also enormous, 2 feet wide, 15" tall, 18" deep. I was in my house for 13 years, so while I made money when I sold my house (because of inflation), I think the final sale price would have been similar if I had put in basic appliances. High end appliances are things to put in for yourself, not for resale value - there's very limited return on investment going higher end than Kitchen Aid / Bosch / F&P - but there is a quality difference when you use them every day. I wasn't planning to sell my house when I made these buying decisions, and I really don't have any regrets about it - I'll buy many of them again. But you will absolutely not get your money back on paper by putting these in.

Can you use cast iron pans for induction cooktops?
@ProbablyWorthSharing4 күн бұрын
Yes, they work great! Cast iron and carbon steel work on any induction. It’s stainless and non-stick you need to check for compatibility (I use All Clad copper core stainless).

What model number is that combi oven? Need to see if it's possible to find a similar plumb in version here in Scandinavia
@ProbablyWorthSharing4 күн бұрын
Mine is DGC 7845, looks like it’s the same model number in Sweden. They come in a few sizes in North America: 24” wide and 30” wide (cosmetically larger to sit over an oven, same interior size), and 18” tall and 24” tall. Mine was 24x18” which is large enough to roast a large chicken. The plumbed in versions have “fresh water connection” on the spec list.

@ thank you! I've never seen a plumb version here (very few units here is plumbed, no matter if we talk coffee makers, ovens or fridges), but since I'm doing a complete remodeling I want as much as possible of this

Okay so i am curious, if the kitchen cabinet designer didn’t want to listen to you, why did you still go with them? It doesn’t make sense to me, if they don’t wanna listen to the customers then why go with them at all?
@ProbablyWorthSharing19 сағат бұрын
It’s a fair question. They’re the best local cabinet maker, known for their quality craftsmanship; the kitchen in my loft was made by them. The biggest issues happened in the last week before putting the deposit down - at this point I’d already had a sample cabinet made and approved, and I trusted they could execute on it. At the time I just wanted the order in so I could get a kitchen on time. I did talk to a few other cabinet makers during the heat of the conflict and to switch to another cabinet maker at that point would have meant going over a year back in the queue and no one was taking new jobs due to the massive influx of home renos during Covid. So by that point it was go with them or pay double to wait a year.

Art is personal, it's meant to make us feel things, and interpretations are subjective. This is a painting of a guy with a t-shirt on his head, a hickey on his neck, and sultry lips, waiting to be kissed by his lover. It’s an original painting by gay Canadian artist Steven Restagno, titled Blindfold III (The Kiss). Steven’s work is rooted in queer expression, and I recommend checking out the rest of his work, and the joy he takes in expressing self-love: stevenrestagno.com

Pro tip for life: Integrity is priceless. Owning up to your mistakes may not always be easy, but it's the foundation of trust and accountability.
