Note: A couple of days ago Porsche announced an over-the-air update to their infotainment that includes adding Android Auto to the Taycan. The Taycan already had some of this system in place so it's unclear how many of our gripes will be addressed when it arrives. Also we are aware that the Model S Plaid is price comparable to this. It wasn't shipping when we reviewed this car and we can only do one car at a time. We'll be happy to check out the Plaid when/if we can. Porsche made it easier by offering short-term rentals.

Why you keep using those shitty (in terms of graphics performance) real-time OSes for touchscreens? Just have a separate computer running RTOS for anything vital, and on tablets run a regular Linux or BSD with GPU-accelerated GUIs simply interfacing with said computer (I believe that's more or less what Tesla does). Worst case scenario: if the OS on the tablet hangs - it doesn't matter cause it's not running anything important, you could just detect that it's not responding and restart the whole thing.

@helplmchoking Жыл бұрын
This is a normal thing and is actually often an emissions thing (hangover from ICE vehicles). The testing manufacturers have to do is a fairly short drive representing real conditions, which is why your car will try to get the cats up to temp as fast as it absolutely can, it's why things like exhaust and engine settings default to the comfort modes so they can ensure it gets tested in its most eco state and it's why stop start exists, it makes fuck all difference in the real world but in a brief test run it does make a real difference. Tldr you can only emissions and safety test the car in the state it starts up in every day, so they make them reset to comfort to try and scrape through tests

One thing ima say for Linus to know, someone’s probably said it, but they didn’t under rate the hp because the numbers they give are what the engine or batteries can put out. This does not include the powertrain loss which is usually around 15% horsepower loss from the motors delivering the powers to the wheels. So while they torque is underrated, the horsepower is probably on the money
@Kitteh.B2 жыл бұрын
Also various dynos report different numbers based on the technology they use. Dynojet usually reports higher than Mustang if I'm remembering right. Plus you gotta factor in calibration, how thoroughly they input the relevant information, which can introduce variables, such as ambient temperature (for example, colder temps are better for ICE engines because cool air is more dense), and also number of tests as even three consecutive tests can have a range of results. Everything compounded, it's entirely feasible to have that kind of a discrepancy. That's to say nothing of the argument for measurement types, like hub dyno vs roller dyno and which numbers are "official" and whatnot!

What's wrong with simplicity! I'll stick to my older cars thank you very much.
@tren1333 жыл бұрын
Individual buttons cost more and take longer to install. That's why Tesla just slaps one big screen in the car and make you use that for everything; it saves them money. And now because Tesla is cool and like the Apple of cars, regular car makers are copying them by putting screens in their cars as well. BMWs have really well designed interiors in terms of ergonomics, having a good mix of buttons and knobs for essential functions, but their new EVs like the i4 and iX have gone screen heavy Tesla style, and many of the buttons have been removed. Quite a shame really.
@callmezucc93183 жыл бұрын
@@tren133 I particularly hated the BMW method of using a knob to push in each direction to navigate the menu in the infotainment system, so slow and really distracting on the road. Don't think they use that anymore though. I agree, it is a shame.

@@callmezucc9318 I think the first generation iDrive required the driver to push the knob in like 8 directions, which was crazy. But BMW has worked on it over the years to make it less distracting, and the current gen only moves left and right and the screen is also a touch screen too. It would be fine if BMW would just put this system into their new EVs. It works fine in the i3 and iX3, but of course they have to go screen heavy in the newest EVs like the i4 and iX, especially the iX, and remove so many useful hard buttons.

@@tren133 I always hated the UI in my BMW x5 the non click turn signals have me unintentionally flashing turn signals all the time and the knob wheel thing to navigate the infotainment is still clunky, I've come to the conclusion most high end cars are fun to drive but suck compared to cheap cars in most other ways.
@tren1333 жыл бұрын
@@carbomb6210 Yeah I'm also not a fan of those ridiculous turn signals. The new BMWs for the past couple of years have gone back to a traditional turn signal stalk which locks into place and snaps back after a turn. Better than Tesla which has now just straight up gotten rid of the stalk altogether. Also the new BMWs have both the iDriver controller and a touch screen so you can choose which one to use. Overall I'd still much prefer the BMW interior to a Tesla interior, that is until the new i models started taking away buttons.

“Is listening to music not an intrical part of driving?” No, I don’t think it is. To me, listening to the sound of the car and scrubbing of the tires sure is, though! A friend picked me up in his Taycan 4S and we spent about an hour in the car, and didn’t listen to a single song. The album art was nice to look at, though. At least it has Carplay, something I wish my Tesla had. That said, the Tesla infotainment system is okay, just not great. Like the Model S interior. Back to the Taycan - we spent far too much time toggling through the driving modes with that beautiful driving mode control knob. The feel of that really confirms the quality of the car, it feels so well made, like the rest of the car. The way the steering tightens, the suspension lowers and stiffens all added to the driving experience. The extra synthetic motor noises were a bit of fun. I appreciated the passenger-side screen, it was nice to have some control and something to play with while just sitting in that comfortable seat. The interior is so good, Tesla has a long ways to go to match the quality inside the Porsche. I loved the on-track driving and drifting of that Frozen blue car, you had me cracking up with all that hooliganism, it was GREAT! Did you cover any lane keeping assist features…I’m not sure if I just missed them. You made the launch control look so simple, nicely done, so nice to see that 4718lb car move so quickly! The issue with GUI Apps and Software is, that they are pain in the ass to create. Working with Vectors is one of the most horrible things I've ever done and I can clearly see that tve developers couldn't bother to create something as well. I mean, the GUI looks like a 2010 Android Phone at some parts...

The "smarter" a car becomes, the more companies feel the need to reinvent the wheel (pardon the pun) of infotainment controls
@brandonthegrey3 жыл бұрын
The reason is because there are more and more features and developers are having a hard time figuring out where to put them, for example, my family's 2020 cadillac escalade has a microphone in front to allow you to speak to the back without having to shout, but it's the stupidest thing because the people in the back HAVE to shout back at you because there aren't any microphones in the back, so in that case, microphones in the front are practically useless because there WILL be shouting in case you're going through a drive-through. More and more companies are adding things that look good on paper in order to say that "we have a lot of features" which in turn is where the problem lies.

There are still cars on sale today that buck the trends - my 1,5 y.o. Mazda 3 BP sedan has no touch screen, no fake vents, no fake exhaust, no fake engine noise, it has all the modern tech (for this price point), and it's surprisingly ergonomic. HUD display combined with a screen sitting high on the dash, and physical buttons, mean that I pretty much never need to take my eyes off the road while driving. Lack of a touch screen sucks only when you need to enter navi destination, or zoom on google maps, since it's a pain to do with the swivel wheel. Still, you can always use voice commands for setting directions, and zoom on the map actually works great on the swivel wheel, if you use the onboard navigation. I could certainly do without the piano black on the center console, door switches, and on the B pillar, though. This trend needs to die asap, too.

Heh, should see how expensive cars are in Australia. There are a handful of cheap options, like the MG3 for 20K, but most decent cars that have things like a GPS and something other than a lawnmower engine under the hood, etc. are well over 20k. The car that Linus just reviewed is 220K for the absolute base model, and 400K for the Turbo.

Dynos measure HP at the wheel, not at the “crank.” You’re not going to get the same figures for what the factory shows vs what the dyno shows. This is completely normal.

this isnt applicable here. The motors in electric cars do not have gearboxes, there should be little to no losses.
@zaydabbas16093 жыл бұрын
@@gagbabgerwer5883 there's still a significant amount of losses through the gearing, also this is not a single speed transmission, it still has a clutch
@alexanderpeter2193 жыл бұрын
@@zaydabbas1609, touque would actually see the biggest difference not power. Though dynos correct for metrics and give a torque figure which isn’t correct, and is a lot higher. In the car world 500 ft lb of torque is a lot, but not enough alone to move something with lots of force that could be 2.5 tons.
@UnvarnishedTarnished3 жыл бұрын
@@gagbabgerwer5883 It is applicable. What companies claim is that the motor is X horsepower. So we can place 90% of the blame on Tesla when it comes to implementing touchscreen controls into an environment where you need to be able to instinctively reach things, and get immediate feedback that your input was accepted.
@armadillito3 жыл бұрын
Nah, it would have come anyway. Touchscreens are now cheaper and easier to design for and to build in during manufacturing. Luxury automakers ought to stop chasing Tesla's aesthetic and put in well designed, well made buttons and knobs for the things that need them.
@odiousfox3553 жыл бұрын
I mean for what Tesla is trying to do it kind of makes sense. Tesla wants to make self driving cars, so if the car is partially self driving you can afford to pay a little less attention to the road. Other cars aren't trying to go for self driving, therefore the touch screens don't make much sense for them.
@armadillito3 жыл бұрын
@@odiousfox355 except you absolutely must not take your attention off the road yet (edit: although you can get away with it) . The cars aren't yet able to cope with every situation so must have a human alert and ready to take over.
