Such a cool project! Travel pads are so cool even if I'd avoid doing any crossovers on them.

I don't have all the tools... I don't have all of the materials... I probably don't even have all the skills to assemble things... But I want one! lol! Fantastic video on the whole process of it too! Entertaining and insightful!

I don't know if I already commented in one of your videos, but I've binge-watched a ton of your stuff, especially the pad-building series. Thanks for recording and uploading those! Bro if you're ever in Brazil again, let's play some Pump it Up!😎

Unsorted thoughts/things I've ran into before: - Use wood glue with wood threaded inserts. It'll be stronger than the rest of the wood panel (same idea as MDF) - Threaded inserts for plastic are different than for wood. You want to drill a hole that they don't quite fit into and then use a soldering iron to melt it into place. Then you can't pull it out at all, even though the outside doesn't look like a screw. Doesn't work with acrylic (acrylic cracks instead of melting) but polycarb and PE (like HDPE/UHMW) should work just fine. - Spray painting MDF with a primer should seal it just fine. - I like that miter saw. - Since you have a drill press, you can use a countersink bit and countersink bolts so they lay flat with the surface. I did that on my extrusion pad and it looks really nice (although my mdf pad works better overall lol.) What material are you 3d printing with? I feel like PLA would crack pretty quickly, but ABS/ASA/PETG/polycarbonate would work well - especially polycarb. Looks like your delta has a v6 extruder on it though? It might be able to print with it.

Fantastic as always, thanks for showing this process off! Seeing more pad builds is inspiring towards future goals. Good music selection, dig the Tool poster, and yes, post-ITG beer is good. Keep it up!

Thanks man. I'm the kind of guy if I find a good tool at a yard sale, even if i dont need it, I can't stop myself from buying it. I think I picked up my big standing drill press for under $50 for example. It drives my wife crazy sometimes. But it comes in handy in future projects having plenty of options available to experiment with. Sometimes i like simpler solutions like cutting the frames with a hack saw vs an angle grinder which would have been way faster. Hack saws are super fun to use. I really like cool tools, but im the first to admit I am not very skilled at using them 🤓

Really sick video (the montage was amazing!) And I have to say I'm jealous. The black frames on black HDPE looks incredibly slick. And the bracketless retention method using the bolts is really clean too. I do hear you on the "will only fit in a big suitcase" issue though. When I fly domestically I only ever take a carry-on which measures like 21"x14"x9". My old pad barely fit diagonally and the new one has to be disassembled to fit at all. Something that literally folds in half would be ideal...
@domitg2 жыл бұрын
At some point i was considering using two half sized peices of HDPE for the base. It would have been cheaper as i could use off the shelf cutting boards. Then, i could dissassemble the pad for the flight and the base could split in two pieces which would definitely fit in a carry on. Maybe some day i can experiment with cutting my wood base in two to see how stable it would be. Regardless, having a travel pad you can easily disassemble that doesnt have parts glued and stuff leaves a lot of options on the table!

You built that thing like a tank! For the power and USB I would suggest using magnetic or at least right angle cables. That hot glue is nasty. Perfboard and solder would've been more reliable and easier to fit under the center panel.
@domitg2 жыл бұрын
I just looked up magnetic micro usb cables and those looks perfect! I'm definitely going to get one. Thanks so much for that tip. I actually did get some of those protoboards with the intent to do that but when thinking about holding/mounting them, i experimented with the mini breadboards and found that fit so i just went with it. Stuff like that I'm not too wortied about because i can always re-do it later without a ton of effort.
