I echo your comment, Lorna! There are too many people who feel that attacking someone doing a fantastic service to dogs and the shelters is their right. Especially going after someone who has a phenomenal following like Lee Asher. I would strongly urge the 'hater' to watch Wednesday rescue videos. There have been a couple that were exclusively GSD's and or Malinois. But, usually, even a rescue like that has at least one mixed breed. As Taylor Swift would sing, "Hater gotta hate.. Shake it off!" 😂❤

There need to be laws and then enforced laws. Puppy mills are just horrendous and backyard breeders have no regard for the animals, just the profits they make at the animals expense. Breeding should require a very expensive license, tracking the sales/animals and real oversight.

it is a good development that municipalities are banning pet stores - mine did years ago. But, I still see signs posted for puppies, like French Bulldog puppies etc and my heart always sinks. The other thing we can do, and Lee has done a lot of this, is adopt/rescue dogs who have been used for puppy mill breeding. We adopted a 10-year old mini poodle, who hadn't been spayed (and now might have mammary cancer) and apparently she wasn't good enough to breed anymore (and went blind) so they just left her tied up outside the shelter at 2 am. Luckily rescue got her in time, and now we have her and she's the sweetest girl. (She's spayed now!)

@@melbird-dw3su Breeders should also OFA (Orthopedic Foundation for Animals) test their breeding animals for both genetic and osteo issues and post their results. Breeders have a responsibility to both animals and their new families to produce puppies that are sound and healthy.

Hi Lee! I rescued a dog just before the pandemic was starting. She is a mixed breed of 10 different dogs. Did a DNA test and I had to laugh at the results. So many people asked and still ask her breed. I truly didn’t care about the breed. She is perfect just the way she is. She actually has rescued me! She had been dumped in a trash bin in Georgia at 5 weeks. I got her in Wisconsin at 6 weeks. So tiny and beautiful. Anyway, forgive my long comments. I rescued a Maltese/Westie mix from a homeless drug addict. He cost me $170 and my new jacket and shoes. I drove home shoeless, a little cold but very happy to have gotten this puppy out of a bad situation. He puked and pooped on me for 200 miles. That night he was diagnosed with Parvovirus. After 12 days at vet hospital, I got my best friend home. You rescue what needs rescuing - you are not rescuing the breed, you are rescuing a dog. Lee, you are doing great work and this obviously makes you so happy. You are a blessed man. P.S.- I hope your Dad is doing well, and is safe.

I just read about a couple who spent $5k at a pet store to buy a designer breed. They later found out it was actually five breeds and were happy to receive a 50% refund. So they ended up spending $2,500 for a dog they could have found at any rescue, for $250 and save two lives to boot. The ignorance of people just kills me.

Designer dogs need to be "adopted" too. They didn't ask to be brought into an over-populated situation. It's the breeders (greeders) that need to be controlled.

Unfortunately people don't want to take the time to research and find a good local breeder where they can actually visit and see the conditions that these puppies are born into. So they go to a pet store and pay exorbitant prices and don't even get the breed they paid for. I can't help but think how many puppies could have been saved if they had given that same $2,500 to a rescue.

Patience is the key with dogs. At 70 I ended up with a four-month-old Aussie. Was I up for this rather energetic boy? Well, hell yes because I implemented patience, which I thought was long gone at my age. He just turned two and I tell him how well we are aging together.

I just rescued two chihuahuas. A bonded pair so they could not be separated, and it’s been nothing but a pleasure to have. I wanted a small dog and it took a while where I am to find them as the smaller ones go first, but it’s worth the search. Don’t buy from breeders please. There are tons of unwanted dogs waiting for a good home. Do your research and learn what type of dog suits your lifestyle.

Shelters have pure breeds and Heinez 57s. Both of my childhood dogs were pure bred. They were rescued because of circumstance. The 1st was because she was sick, diseased and extremely fearful because of abuse and my Father was the only one she would let approach. The 2nd one was because we could still meet her needs even though my Father was gone a lot and my Mother cared for my Granny who was bedridden. Rather than direct animosity towards Lee & the Sanctuary why not direct your anger towards human beings who don't spay and neuter, who buy designer dogs (from puppy mills/backyard breeders) to feed their egos and neglectful and/or abusive owners? The US spends roughly $2B a year on ending the lives of unwanted pets! Why not get angry and do something about that? Get real, get active, get donating and get over yourself. Lee is part of the solution. Not the problem.❤🐕

I think one issue why purebreds end up in shelters has to do with their needs - training, exercise in particular. Huskies are high maintenance, high energy. They're a lot of work! And that's not even counting their floofiness and the shedding. Your emphasis on education is so important, Lee! Thanks for all you do!

You are rights. Unfortunately there are some trends regarding the breeds, for instance now everybody wants to have belgian malinois or husky. People buy or adopt such dog, not even realizing that the first one is very high energy and the second is high energy and very vocal. Or they buy a Saint Bernard puppy and they are suprised that the dog gets so big ☹️

On top of that, the type of person who would do that has a fantasy of a "perfect" dog riding in their convertible, fur rippling through the wind. They don't care about exercise; they forget about walking at 6 am in January, or cleaning up the "accidents", or potential vet bills. It drives me nuts! And there has been for quite some years and not only in the Usa! Our vet used to deplore this decades ago, in the 80s', it enraged him, volunteering on his spare time at the equivalent of the local humane society. People take an animal like they would chose an item on a shelf without thinking they will have to take care of a living being for years. And one must say that affordable veterinary care is scarce.

I guess people sending the hate mail are from another country, for example in my country there are very rarely pure bred dogs in shelters the overwhelming majority are mixes (mutts)

I think it depends on the country that you live in if there are more purebreds or mixed breeds in the shelters. In Poland there are mostly mixed breeds in the shelters (many of them are some kind of german shepherds mix, taken from nad situation living on the chain). There are some purebreds in the shelters, but more often you can find a purebred dog in "one breed" rescue or foundation.

Unfortunately some breeds are impacted by people adopting "The breed of the moment"... because of a film, a series, etc... instead asking themselves the good questions about their lifestyle and if it is coherent with a certain breed of dog or even just a dog. Years ago, it was very rare to see a French bulldog. Now they're everywhere, with all sorts of new health problems due to inbreeding and overbreeding. Goldens weren't nearly as common as they are now, and due to overbreeding they have a 50+% chance of developing cancer. A dog breed should never be a fad.

My Reece is a Shepherd-Husky cross and she's been a great companion to me for 13 years now. We call them Northern Specials here, as there are so many like her. Adopting her was the best choice for me. She has the best qualities of both breeds.

You have played a big part in my decision to rescue a dog. My pup is a staffie mix. I actually did a DNA test to determine his mix. I will say it is a challenge and since I'm old even more so. I live in the Detroit area and I know that all across the country shelters are full- Everyone is free to make a personal choice but hopefully people do consider rescues. It's really the only way you can save 2 dogs by adopting . You save the adopted dog and make room in the shelter for another. That is my kind of math. Thank you Lee for being an inspiration.

Thank you for your helpful videos! One thing I would love to see is Butter's origin story. I know he one of the OG dogs of yours, but we never saw his story, and how he came to be with you. Once I own my own home, (in the works), I plan to adopt a senior dog from a local shelter. Being a senior myself, I can relate!! I so wish people had more common sense than they do in this day and age. Look at how many subscribers there are on this channel and how many comments the man gets, with all the work he has to do for the animals, it would be humanly impossible to answer all the comments. If he tried to, he would have time to take care of the animals. This man is doing so much good. Please people that send crap comments, look at what he is doing and use some sense. The hate mail is ridiculous! Those people are focused on themselves and not the overall goal you're trying to accomplish. Look around at the dogs, they're all sizes, shapes, and forms. Proud Mamma of a rescued ‘Boggle” aka Beagle/ Boxer Chloe!💗 Her mother, a full bred beagle, was on the euthanasia list with 4 beautiful puppies inside. Luckily, she was fostered by a friend and gave birth within days. Of the 4 pups, Chloe chose us to be her forever family and we can’t imagine life without her. We even have yearly birthday parties for the siblings and mamma comes too! Rescuing Rocks!,🐾 Lee, just read the positive comments!!

If there’s a purebred you’re interested in, follow a group that rescues that purebred. I am fostering a dog of an uncommon breed that I’m a fan of and the volume of available dogs of this breed is astounding (and not in a good way). But I recommend going to a shelter and adopting the dog that is drawn to you. I had a pittie mix choose me 16 years ago. I had never adopted a pittie before. Our relationship was incredibly special. She was so devoted. Run in peace until we meet again, Roxy! ❤🌈. Okay Lee is talking about the purebred rescues now. 😊

Our dogs have been rescues, 1 super mutt, 1 lab/pittie mix and 1 black lab and they each have their own personality and WE LOVE THEM! If you want a great life get yourself a rescue animal, because life is better when your best friends live with you 😊!

Decades ago I read a veterinarian's comment that if she had an all-powerful magic wand, she would shut down all breeders, even the reputable and responsible ones, until every single animal shelter and rescue was empty. I have a great deal of sympathy for that view. Until the shelters and rescues are empty however, we should support Lee and all the other shelter and rescue organizations trying to give the animals in their care a better life. Lee, I don't care if you only rescue green spotted chihuahua/Great Dane mixes. Every animal rescued is one fewer that is scared, hungry, and/or sick, and one more that is secure, fed, and cared for.
