And here I foolishly thought I was the only one that gave this much praise to My Mister. I have also watched this drama more than once. I do warn those that love dramas as well. Once I watched this, every drama I ever watched went down in score. I now find it difficult to watch other dramas as well. My Mister is such a beautifully told story about humanity. I've watched numerous other dramas afterwards and have felt disappointed after every single one. I'm no longer easily moved by awkward romances, overly dramatic emotional breakdowns, or predictable tragedies. Watching My Mister and then other dramas is like going from fine dining to fast food. Watch My Mister at your own risk.

Korea is one of the worst place to live... the pressures at work, family, socially... even in cyberspace... its netizens are one of the worst... overly judgemental and opinionated without knowing the full story etc. RIP Lee Sun Kyung... great actor.

I was bawling at the end. Especially, the last few eps hit me so hard, I could not stop watching one eps after another. The show demonstrates the power of caring of others. If Dong Hoon did not pay attention to Ji An, the domino effect may not have started. If the old gentleman who cleans the office did not show his support at Ji An's graduation, if Ji An didn't notice Guang Il's thoughtfulness as a kid... these small kindness can change someone's life and this script captures that so well. The backdrop of the story, each character development, and the props like the wiretapping/earphones, the sandal, the shopping cart, the instant coffee... it is like you are living there with the characters. I've watched a lot of K-dramas but this one hit me the hardest and kudos to those who produced it. If US shows can learn from these creators, I think it would be great for the industry. Thanks for the great review!

Thank you for your review, Stephan. It’s true that one feels empty after watching My Mister the first time around. One has to watch it again and again and again. I watched it four times, too. Doing so led me to a totally unexpected experience - I had an illumination of conscience! Not only was I touched and moved to reflect on my life. In those 16 episodes, right before my very eyes, I saw my life play out. Numerous scenes shattered and ripped my heart apart, much like an open-heart surgery, and exposed to me how I have offended God, man and myself - the thoughts, words and acts I should not have done and should have done. Each time I watched it all over again, more of these were revealed and I found myself pausing and, just like Ji-an, saying with utmost remorse the words “I’m sorry” over and over while crying a river. The multitude of sorry misses to show friendliness, respect, understanding, compassion and love for decades were unbearable. I had to go through this suffering of being shown the dark side of me to realize some things - life is really difficult…there are crosses we carry daily...our unkindness makes life more difficult for others…what we say and do are either life-depleting or life-giving…life is not all darkness…there are plentiful moments and chapters in our lives that are true, good and beautiful because we are also true, good and beautiful. With so many promptings of the spirit and numerous aha moments, I decided to write them down as I watched the second and third times. Re-watching and meditating on my notes led me to a deep dive understanding of myself, life, and my faith. When I decided to watch it the fourth time, I had a very clear purpose - healing. And so, there were many instances in almost all episodes, when I would stop and ask God to forgive me and then bless the persons I have caused pain and suffering in small and big ways, especially my husband and mother who recently passed. I begged Him to give me the graces I need to become a better human being so that I will always choose the higher good…so that I will be mindful of the chances that each day presents to me to easing the distress of persons I encounter by simply being kinder…so that from now on I will seek the good in others and in all circumstances. It is unbelievable that My Mister became an emotional detoxification and a spiritual experience for me. It also inspired me to act. I’m now writing songs based on the poignant lessons I learned, the whirlwind of emotions I felt, and firm resolutions I made. I signed up as a member of a prolife organization. I am finally mentoring my seven children because it’s not too late to heal and be magnanimous. I am fired up! Will I watch My Mister the fifth time? Perhaps. But for now, I’m happy. After the fourth watch, just like Ji-an and even Dong Hoon, I have found peace. Thank you for your kindness, the tender attention you gave in reading this.

IU was just so amazing in her acting and that scene she said goodbye to grandma in the morgue, just can't help it with my tears. Thanks for the great review of this underrated show.
@martindaff3 жыл бұрын
By far the most affecting drama I've seen - not just for a Korean drama but from any source. By the end of the series, you have been through so many emotions that when you see just the smallest clip or still from the programme or hear a song from the soundtrack, every feeling comes flooding back. The acting from all the cast is faultless but IU stands out particularly because of the way she can convey so much with the smallest gesture or expression. Surely she will have seen some parallels with her own upbringing and that adds poignancy to her portrayal. The funeral scene is one of saddest but then ultimately uplifting I've seen. As you say, people should not be put off by the seemingly dark and dry first episode. That is one of the joys of this series is that it takes it time drawing the characters in front of your eyes and pulling you in so you care for all of them. It's a series which benefits from replaying. Second, thid or fourth time round, it still pulls you in - in fact even more so. Class.

They are basically each other redemption of life. The girl is just too young to handle such a harsh and burdenful life alone include her parent debt, deaf granma, her murdered shark loan's son who has a crush on her before she killed his dad in defense. While he is just underappreciated and mistreated by his cheating wife, biased company and conspiracy of his boss play with his wife. Through peeking on each other life, they found their own salvation by lending a helpful hand and warmth.

Totally agree! Of course it cannot be compared. It is outstanding and unique! Really touched me and I saw all episodes within two days! Later I learned that IU was so extraordinary sensational in her acting, bc it came from her deep inside herself. She has gone through loneliness and depression herself. During the making of My Mister it is told that she was so affected by her own psychological challenges that she got sick and she wanted to quit it. Because everybody at the set cared so much for her, she didn‘t. So she did not play a role, it was more or less real. Watching My Mister, I always thought that this was more than acting. So knowing these things, I on the one hand felt sorry for her, on the other hand I started to sincerely admire her for her pure and genuine character. Must have been a rode on the razorblade for her to stay und the show. Anyway, there are nearly no films or series worldwide, which can keep up with the depth of My Mister! BTW: here in Germany nearly Nobody knows about k-drama, which is a pitty. Talking about it, my friends, family and colleages stare at my as I was an alien. They have no idea what they miss!

You are absolutely right. This is a masterpiece and a"drama for life". And it's interesting that so many people in the comment section mention "Mr Sunshine" as another one of their favourites. Seems they have a similar mindset... I enjoyed "It's okay not to be okay" very much as well which has a completely different vibe, but is awesome, too. Im general, I prefer Korean productions to Western ones because of the real diversity of stories, the acting skills, the often extremely beautiful cinematography / landscapes and especially the lack of political correctness shoved into your face by Hollywood. Even if sth like this is part of the plot like in "Itaewon Class", it's not that plump. So I'm more than happy to have found gems like the dramas mentioned above!

As you said, the writing, the directing, the acting, the soundtrack : all top notch! It's no wonder that I've loved Misaeng and Signal almost as much later on. Ultimately, I love how this drama explores love in so many different aspects : deep bon, almost like soulmates with our two leads, motherly love, brotherly love, love within a community, Ki Hoon's love story with his actress, lost love with Jung Hee and Gyeom Duk the monk, and so on. Human interactions and (inter)connections at its core. Not the same genre at all but if you haven't seen it I strongly recommend Stranger : great writing, directing and acting as well and the background music is a gem ! I agree. There is nothing else on tv like it. It is an excellent show! American movies have lost something, and this seems to have retained it, perhaps even honed it. The acting, and cinematography is just superb. So much so, you want to go into depth of each, and every character. I would describe this movie as an "Echoes" Pink Floyd song, where the theme is empathy... "Strangers passing in the street By chance, two separate glances meet And I am you and what I see is me And do I take you by the hand And lead you through the land And help me understand the best I can?" You could watch a scene, and then replay that very scene from another character's perspective who was in the same room, and it takes on another meaning, another purpose, just as important. They do this on occasion.

I'm so excited for that, especially because it's packed with great casts and big names in the industry.

I love this drama series so much. They're friendship was so sweet and I love the growth of the characters through out the series... and tackles so many issues, trust, friendship, platonic love vs. romantic love, poverty, responsibility, passion, following your dreams, adulthood, betrayal, love, mid-life crisis, death, depression, marriage, classism, confidence vs insecurity etc. They're love is alot more pure because it's not based off of selfishness or lust or infidelity.... its the love that you have for a bestfriend although I think Mr. Park was not married it could have become something more because Ji-an was defo in love with im in a more romantic way too. I legit empathized with both of the main characters even though they come from such different walks of life. I love melancholic type stories, dramas and films even music so long as it ends in a satisfying. I also love the storyline between Ji-an and her grandmother it legit made me cry because she was deaf but sacrificed to raise Ji-an when her parents died and how it came full circle with Ji-an struggling to care for her granny after the loan sharks attack her. It made me miss and appreciate my grandmother so much more. Mr. Park was also just a caring loving guy towards his wife and even towards Ji-an in a more platonic way. I loved his integrity and how dedicated he was to his family and wife and that he refused to betray her by cheating even if she betrayed him/took him for granted due to her own insecurities. Just a great drama series all around.

i recently rewatched this, having seen it some time ago and fallen in love with it. the rewatch confirmed how utterly wonderful it is. i've seen 7 or 8 other kdramas, and it's wild how much of an outlier this is in terms of emotional truth, social realism, compelling drama, complex characterisation, etc. it's so much better than everything else in its medium that it's like if american television consisted of The Sopranos, and then 200 shows that were more or less like Suits. you made some interesting parallels here with kieslowski, koreeda, etc. i don't know if i'd consider it quite that elevated - like any kdrama, it has a lot of sequences where you have to watch it at 2x playback speed because it's dragging, it has moments where you wish they had just locked the camera down and kept it as one long take instead of pointlessly cutting, it has moments where you wish the only sound was what's in the scene rather than this overpowering, treacly music. but it is still really special, beautiful, and life-affirming
@ManVsDrama3 жыл бұрын
Mmhh...it's definitely an outlier..all I can say is I've watched it 6 times now...more often than any of kieslowskis films...so something is working for me...😁😁😁thanks for sharing your comments!

If u are looking for new K-drama which can take ur mind away when u feel like there is no new other drama that can satisfy u after u watch My Mister, try "The Secret Forest". It is also called "The stranger". It came out season 2 on Netflix. It is very very different genre from My Mister. But so u will love it. And there is Kdrama called "Another Oh Hae Young". It was written by the same writer who wrote My Mister. So u will also enjoy this drama too.

This is a masterpiece, the answer is yes for me, best drama on Netflix ❤️ Everything is incredible, Everyone… IU is wonderful in that kind of acting…. She delivered such a great character here… it’s a lesson of humanity for all of us. Watch out because IU - Lee Ji Eun will be on the next Kore Eda’s movie in Cannes 2022, his first korean movie!

Just finished watching! Definitely the best scripts of all K-Drama. With such little romance, this drama managed to bring so much heartache, growth and self-reflection. I’ve just finished watching this drama. My eyes are swollen from crying. I resonated to much with Park Dong-Hoon with his role in the company. Everyone likes him. He is excellent and passionate with his work but scared and not confident enough to climb the corporate ladder. I applaud him for keeping things to himself. I wish I was like that. But maybe that’s the reason why he was so depressed.

It's the best and also my favorite Korean drama I've seen so far. The main man character (Lee Sun-Kyun) is also a huge and very, very popular actor in Korea and worldwide. He also was the main man actor in the ''Parasite'' movie, which won everything on every film award like Golden Globe, Oscar and ... and last but no least IU, she is also a very, very famous singer in Korea and also an actress. The other actors in ''My Ahjussi'' are also famous.
