The diamonds were the cufflinks she bought him. The rust was "something" he bought her. It showed who valued the relationship more. It's a beautiful song, she has many.

I think they are a metaphor for the good (diamonds) and the bad (rust) of their relationship.

Diamonds and Rust is a definitive classic in storytelling. And Joan's acoustic guitar work is impeccable. The last time I saw Joan Baez in concert (2012), she revealed her sense of humor about this song. She changed the closing verse to sing "so if you're offering me diamonds and Rust, I'd rather have a Grammy". The audience erupted in laughter and applause cuz sadly, while she's had 19 Grammy nominations over her career, she's never won a Grammy.

Your Mom's face said it all during the entire song! She felt that so deeply. You're a lucky son to have a Mom who lets music in like that!

Excellent reaction. Joan was a popular folk song singer and brought Dylan to the public. She was Time Magazine's Woman of the year in the early 1960s. She has always been on the forefront of equality and justice. Joan Baez marched with Martin Luther King in Washington, marched and jailed for her political stances. She sang and marched for blacks, browns, women, gays, prisoners, indigenous, etc. She still performs and has been a beacon of light since 1959. My favorite works are her folk songs of the early to mid 1960s. Again, good to see youth find this amazing voice, this amazing woman. Inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame of all things not long ago.

Joan, now 82, says Dylan broke her heart. She said she was angry about his leaving her for years, until she painted a portrait of him, the way he was when he was young, and she said , suddenly, all the anger just left her..

I'm back. Dylan loved the song and wrote "Oh, Sister" in response and apologized to Joan for the way he treated her. Joan has admitted he broke her heart by the way he treated her and she walked away. The call comes 10 years after their break up. Just out of the blue!

That last verse got me. My first love (and really the only true one) reached out to me on Facebook after all these years wanting me to call. That was the person I was hoping back when I was 23 in the 1980s to spend the rest of my life with. It hurts to this day when I let myself think about it... which I rarely do. I'm not sure if I want to call at this point. But yeah, amazing song and Joan Baez's voice is like no other. "Now you're telling me, you're not nostalgic Then give me another word for it You were so good with words And at keeping things vague 'Cause I need some of that vagueness now It's all come back too clearly Yes, I loved you dearly And if you're offering me diamonds and rust I've already paid"

Thanks for doing this reaction Silas! Hauntingly beautiful, poetic and brave. If your channel goes into the folk realm more, may I suggest a Pete Seeger reaction or two. I appreciate this channel so much. After a long day or working, it is amazing to share music together:)

the mid 70's had several greats - Dylans ' Blood on tracks ' W. Nelsons ' red Headed Stranger' , Grateful Dead ' blues for Allah ' J. Mitchells. 'Hejira' easy to make a case they were each artists best. Joni was a great guitar picker as well as singer I think. and a huge star, cover of Time mag for instance pre Dylan. She was on Dylans ' rolling thunder' tour about this time. and huge activist, marching with MLK etc etc . the official Utube for this has a photo section.

I had the good fortune to see Joan Baez live once. This fellow describes her voice as "pretty". I know he means well, and is obviously affected by the song, but her voice could make the hair on the back of your neck stand up. It wasn't just pretty, it was incredibly powerful. Having said that, thank you for posting this. You have excellent taste in music.

Judas Priest made a hard rock hit of “Diamonds and Rust” on their 1977 album Sin After Sin and on their Unleashed In the East live album. Years later they did an “unplugged” version for MTV that took the song back closer to its roots that was just beautiful. BUT, my favorite version is the live performance from their RISING IN THE EAST dvd that was more on the unplugged side and really shows how amazing Rob Halford’s voice is. You should really check it out! Link below. kzbin.info/www/bejne/o3qmaH6HhamoesUsi=gyt6lRfmEdcPwKTY

Anyone who has ever experienced a narcissistic relationship will recognize the indicators in this story. The story begins with Baez receiving a typical narcissistic “Hoover” with the out of the blue phone call. Diamonds and Rust is a metaphor for the narcissistic dynamic of love bombing/devaluing, the push/pull, the up and down of these types of relationships. Only a narcissist could tell an incredibly talented song writer, poet and musician such as Baez , that her poetry is “lousy.” (What a jerk!) this indicates typical narcissistic devaluing behavior. She goes on to describe the grandiosity of the narcissist as he “ bursts on the scene already a legend the unwashed phenomenon.” She goes on to describe how someone so good with words is also good at keeping things vague. The typical word salads of the narcissist. I am glad to hear that at the end she does reject his “Hoover,” by telling him, “ if you’re offering me diamonds and rust, I’ve already paid.”

Would you play “A Man I’ll Never Be” by Boston? A year ago I was sitting at this time at a hospice house with my 29 year old daughter. I often listened and thought of this song. She passed away on March 9, 2023. Ironically, Boston’s singer, Brad Delp, passed away on the same date, March 9, 2007. I would like to see your reaction and thoughts of the meaning. Thanks! kzbin.info/www/bejne/fZ7GkKdtopejeZYsi=L_EIdt1w_O23Rdzl
