Judas Priest covered this song and rocked it out. But many years later the two guitarists and the singer from Judas Priest did an acoustic version of the rock version they did to cover Joan's song, lol!! I'm going to go find those versions and add them to this comment. Even if you don't review it publically, please please hear it. It will fascinate you as to what they do with this song. It makes the hair on your arms stand on end. This is the heavy version, kzbin.info/www/bejne/qZacXnt_lLudrac and this is the acoustic version kzbin.info/www/bejne/o3qmaH6HhamoesU

Bob Dylan is known for his lyrical attacks on ex-lovers and friends. He didn't hold much back. So this clap back at him and his "vagueness" for all his being "so good with words" is..just excellent!

True but I do prefere "Oh Brother" which is a song that answers to Dylan's "Oh Sister" he wrote for her. She is less gentle and sweet as she sounds in "Diamonds and Rust"!

‘Diamonds And Rust’ is a song that needs to be listened to directly from the album, pressed on vinyl, and the sound resonating from a stylus, gliding along the inner grooves, pouring out a pair of speakers straight into your ears.

She's supremely accomplished musically; one of the best folk rockers ever. I always thought her politics was a little contrived but compared to today she's just another liberal performer. There are some real nutcases out there in 2024. But I never paid attention to any performer's politics, if they had this kind of talent I couldn't care less. Imagine not listening to Streisand simply because she's a lefty; she and Baez had the most perfect voices of the era. Judy Collins, Joni Mitchell, Carly Simon, they all were in a class of their own and held a special place in my eclectic music library.

He wasn't married, he was very young, she was an acclaimed folk singer already "the Madonna was yours for free". The quaver in her voice is called vibrato. Also. Bob Dylan was not cheating on anyone by having an "affair" with Joan Baez. Neither of them were married, and he was actually still healing from a broken heart when they first met and eventually had a romantic relationship. Baez admitted she was venting feelings from her held resentment, harbored hurt/ anger towards Bob when she wrote Diamonds and Rust. It must have been a great catharsis for her because eventually she got back on the good foot and as friends with Bob once again. Btw, the production value is incredible for the whole album. To this day I consider it one of the best produced studio recordings/albums I have ever heard.

"You strayed into my heart" isn't about cheating, it's about Dylan making his way into her heart without intent. They weren't brought together by an act of will, but by randomness (Dylan was "temporarily lost at sea") and their short love story took place because their path happened to cross at this exact moment in their life. Baez was already an established folk singer at the time and Dylan was just a vagabond-looking guy to the eyes of the world ("The unwashed phenomenon/The original vagabond"). And she took care of him, clothed him ("I bought you some cufflinks") and protected him ("Yes, the girl on the half-shell/Would keep you unharmed"). But one day he just left the way he came, breaking her heart in the process, and that's what this song is about. Edit : Their love was very one-side, she was extremely giving and he was not (while she took care of him, he brought her "something"). This song is her way of making sense of her relationship with Dylan, but also coming to terms with the fact that sometimes love is also about giving and expecting nothing in return. In "Love Song to a Stranger" she writes about this as well : "Don't tell me of love everlasting and other sad dreams I don't want to hear. Just tell me of passionate strangers who rescue each other from a lifetime of cares. Because if love means forever, expecting nothing returned, then I hope I'll be given another whole lifetime to learn."

You seem to be making so many surprised new discoveries of adored classics. All those years ago, my singing them at bedtime to my now 32 year old daughter clearly paid off as she is now a musician singing folk, rock, jazz, blues, classical in several languages. Joan BA·YEZ the best way I can spell it phonetically. This woman's voice was SO pure, such perfect pitch and control, such perfect vibrato -- vibrato was the perfect motor in this song each wave and trough were absolutely equal and in perfect time. _Auto-tune_ doesn't get this good. This was about a phone call she received from Bob about 10 years after their breakup. He wanted help with some lyrics, and the call stirred up a lot of emotion. Joan was major in introducing him to the world. She would bring him on stage during her concerts, not always appreciated by her fans. As his career took off, they traveled to England, where he refused to invite her on stage. She felt betrayed, and they broke up shortly after. Dylan has said that he treated Joan badly. He also wrote a song about this phone call, You’re a Big Girl Now. Dylan’s marriage was breaking up, and some believe he wanted to get back with Joan. He and Joan were young and single when they met.
