My mother just passed away after about 12 years of what Brandon’s mom is going through. Advanced degree, couldn’t find a job, confidence shattered at about 48. She kept stringing everyone along and suddenly passed away. Turned out, she had been diagnosed with diabetes around 50 and never treated it. Basically, she let it do her in because she was so heartbroken by her situation. Brandon, send your mother to the doctor and therapy asap.

I've was in a similar position with my parents since forever. Dad a single earner, stay at home mom, both very poor at money management, took crazy debt all throughout, spent beyond means, dad made horrible career choices, etc. As the only child, they looked at me as their financial saviour in their retirement (and even before). And I took so much pressure on how I would earn so much to not only sustain my life but also theirs. I realized it was a toxic situation and had the tough love talk with them. Dad is now working in retirement to save up more money, and it sucks to see him go through this but there was no other way to make them responsible.

A mistake that I see is that people are getting a Ph.D. in lieu of getting experience and working up the chain of command so to speak. The Ph.D can be a goal but should be done whille she has a full-time job. So she is getting real world experience and gaining more confidence through the new skills she has accumulated. I think with on-line education, people are "rushing" to get their master's and Ph.D.. They then assume that there will be a job "waiting for them" upon graduation. Finally, Ph.D. programs are very expensive and some Ph.D. programs have been shown to have scammed minorities who invested in them in order to get a job upon their completion of their Ph.D. program.

Yep… nowadays, most employers don’t even care about your schooling. They care about the skills you’ve picked up throughout your work career. Yes sometimes a degree is a requirement for a job, but they still care more about your actual experience. They ask about things you’ve done; not what you learned in school.

I understand where his mom is coming from. I also have a doctorate and make less than 70k annually as a researcher. Research is a field that will humble a person. Someone with a bachelors or sometimes a high school degree will earn more or about the same as you. It is what it is. We just have to keep pushing forward and get as many years under our belt as we can. In the long run the degree will be worth it, it may just take 5-10yrs.

I'm going through a similar situation, but didn't have this advice before enabling my mom. Instead of my mom claiming that her medical career wasn't working for a year, this has been going on for yearssss and she has no plans of working. Now she is "sick" and is using that even more as an excuse. Now, I'm trying to severe this dependency. Don't go down that road!

His mom is treating her son not only as her personal bank account but her husband. If this man were to marry, she will take issue because it will cut her funds down. Once upon a time, my bio parents look to me as a retirement. But let me tell you this, they both know I will walk over their dead bodies before I help either one of them. Cruel, yes but they know the expectation. Work, save money for your retirement, if not they will be on the streets.

Giving a drunk a drink is a bad idea, but sometimes the arguing and fighting is just not worth it; especially if you're living at home with them. Children shouldn't have to parent their parents. It's only going to get worse as living at home in adulthood is becoming a necessity, not laziness. Sometimes, you just have to move on in life and leave people behind.

I don’t expect my only child to take care me. Looking back back, I am so glad I made the decisions when I was younger, enlisted in and retired from the military. Because of that decision, I am set for life and will not have to depend on anyone financially. Add, I live on 30% of my retirement pay. It is heartbreaking to hear about this woman that is my age because this describes me perfectly, who have lost confidence due to the difficult transition after retiring. I know how she feels. I’ve been there. I’m still there but the good news for me is I am financially independent because of that retirement pay.

A PhD and working briefy at the CDC in "medical research" until that ended. I'm going to guess the mom got a degree in something related to biochemistry or molecular biology. If she doesn't have any published research of her own, or a few years of solid experience working as a post Doctoral researcher at a prominent university or institute, it will be tough for her to catch on at a university. It's just so competitive amongst PhDs for the very few tenure track positions in academia that open up in any given year. You're competing against the best and brightest minds coming out of elite universities - in the US as well as from overseas. And she's over credentialed as a PhD to work as a laboratory technician at any research program, so that eliminates many possible jobs in the research field.

Dave gave good advice, however, he missed a big psychological part of this equation. The husband is gone and now the son becomes the default husband. I have seen this in my practice even escalating to sleeping in the same bed with the son. Very unhealthy dynamic and I hope this young man has the strength to give mother the shove that she needs. Cruel to be kind is the operative word here.
