To celebrate the release of my brand new National Best Selling book - My Money My Way: Taking Back Control of Your Financial Life, I am starting a six-day Mini-Lesson event. Every day for the next six days, I will be sharing some financial building blocks from my new book!
Are you ready to start transforming your finances?
Today's My Money My Way Mini-Lesson is all about discovering your financial purpose.
To get a daily mini-lesson reminder, make sure you turn on notifications. You can see when the next scheduled mini-lesson live event is happening by checking my bio on Instagram.
Let's start a new financial journey - YOUR WAY!
Day 1: My Money My Way Mini-Lesson: Finding Your Purpose
1. Motivation and self-discipline are not the same, but they can’t live without one another.
2. Your purpose (WHY) is specific, visual, is bigger than yourself, and evokes emotion.
3. Start with a goal, and then ask the follow-up question.
----
Your Homework:
1. Make a list of your possible WHYs - then think about the next question. If you start with a goal, like paying off debt for example, ask yourself why paying off debt is so important to you.
2. Next to each possibly WHY on your list, write down one word on how it makes you feel.
3. Find a photo or another visual reminder and put it somewhere you will see it often (your wallet, office, or bathroom mirror).
----
GET THE GOODIES: If you have ordered a copy of My Money My Way, you can get the accompanying worksheets to My Money My Way! One of the worksheets is perfect for helping you discover your purpose on your financial transformation!

My Why is to give my children a better and more fulfilling life than I had. My parents divorced when I was 5 and my mother raised me on her own. We lived in trailers and run down apartments, and at one point when I was 8/9 years old I was eating "pizza bread" for meals, just pizza sauce on normal toasted bread. I lived in a basement apartment that flooded every time it rained. Some days I'd get out of bed for school and step into an inch or two of cold water. My mom did the best she could with what she was given, my dad was absent and there was no child support from him. I learned very early on what it was to go without when it came to a lot of things, whether the type of place I lived in, clothing (secondhand from thrift stores), the food I ate (if any), toys (thrift stores), a lack of medical care (doctor visits didn't happen unless I was seriously sick, and dental? HA!) to the point where when I became an adult and suddenly had income, I would overspend. I'd overeat, I'd overspend on fun stuff that I never had as a child. I was made fun of for being poor, for not wearing name-brand clothing, etc. etc. In some ways the lack of financial ability stunted my spending habits as an adult. In some ways it helped me grow a thicker spine, knowing full well that I COULD live like that again. I don't WANT to, but that I could survive it as my mom did. There were never family vacations, never big spending, and that flooding apartment I lived in from the age of 10 to the age of 18. I want to give my children the opportunity to experience the magic of childhood that I didn't have as a kid. I don't want them to worry about making ends meet or helping to make ends meet as teenagers. I want them to be young and to enjoy being young. I don't want them to go hungry, I don't want them to put their feet on the floor only to find rainwater, and I don't want them to have the same fears and some of the same disappointments that I had as a child.

My why is retirement! We are 44 now, and starting to realize how quickly 20 years passes. For the past 22 years of marriage, we have prioritized education, followed by our children, and our home. We are self employed, so retirement is all on us. We kept saying "Once we get through this phase, we will save for retirement." But guess what! The phases are neverending! So, we have to kick it into high gear now! We want to serve missions for our church and so we will need extra money beyond the usual retirement needs. That's my why! Also, don't worry for a second about being long winded. 😂 I am long winded too- so it works for me! I say a lot of extra words and I need to hear a lot of extra words!

My Why is my 3 children. They are 8, nearly 5 and 2. I’m a single mum in the UK and I want them to have a secure life with no worries. I want to be able to help them if they need it like my parents are always helping me. I also want to break my bad habits. Thank you for another super helpful video. X

Over the last few months my mind keeps coming back to, How am I going to take care of myself financially if my husband were to pass away? He is our bread winner. I have not had a job in 19 years, long before I met my husband. I do not want to rely on local or state government help if I can avoid it. He was born with a heart condition so every day with him is a blessing. This is my biggest WHY right now. I am trying to find ways to make money on the side so I will be able to care for myself. I plan on buying your book when i go out shopping again.

I am loving these videos!!! Last year I decided to start tracking our spending. After one week I asked my husband what he thought we had spent in that week. He said oh I don't think we spent any money but I will guess $100. I said to him no, we spent $213.16, perfect example of why you really see changes once you track your spending!!!

I am so grateful I happened across your channel. We started our journey last week. My why... My husband and I just bought our first home in August. The reaction of our two little girls running around the empty house the day we closed, giggling and chatting excitedly about how they were going to decorate their own rooms was the best feeling in the world. And then my husband had an accident that put him on short term disability for over 2 months. No matter how hard I tried, we just couldn't keep up without that income and fell behind on our mortgage. The fear and shame and disgust I felt being in that situation, thinking about how we would explain to our kids that we lost our forever home because it was too hard to "adult" properly. I NEVER want to feel that again. There is no turning back, never surrender. Thanks Miko

Happy Valentines Day Miko 💖..when I first started following you I never knew anyone saved for Valentines day but you do..I'm still struggling with budgeting..things keep popping up where money is needed like car repairs mostly..every time I save almost 1,000 something always pops up where that money just goes away..but at least the money is there..I'm currently restarting saving again..thank you for everything 👍👍 keep up the videos

What I found interesting about my homework is that the main purpose i have is to feel safe. I guess, since i am an older single woman with no one to lean on, It is important to me to make my life as safe as possible.

For years and years, I was stuck to my Baby Step 1. I feel frusrated that I’m not going anywhere with my finances. But after watching 9 steps to financial freedom, it dawned on me that your progress is not only measured by numbers. That having a purpose (My WHY), goals, being aware of my spending/expenses, budget and working on achieving my short term goals are also a progress in itself. These helps me to continue my financial journey one step at a time. Thank you Miko. 💖🥰

My financial why is to build a family. We have been struggling with infertility for 5 years now and because we have debt and live paycheck to paycheck, we were never able to get further treatment to have children so my why is to be able to have a family and be financially able to support my children and give them an amazing life. Having children will truly complete me ❤️ Thank you Miko for everything you do!

Love this. I think my why has been because being good at money is just what responsible adults do. As I was watching your video though I realized how much I want to travel and honestly just live a comfortable life until the day I die. It makes me feel excited. Honestly I just want to have fun in life, but I am willing to do the serious stuff to get there.

I need these mini-series because me and my husband are stuck with debt, and we have 3 kids (9, 5 and 3). I’m tired of feeling stuck. So our why is our kids and being able to save money for their future, saving for emergencies and just being debt free. Thank you Miko. I needed to hear this. You are inspiring. Lots of love to you and your boy ❤️

I need to secure my financial future to provide for myself as I age. Knowing that I can pay for anything I need without depending on the .Gov, motivates me. Thank you for your budgeting strategies and materials. It keeps me organized. I’m a bit lazy to do the where did my money go lol but I promise to get it together.

Thank you Miko..... You motivated me once again.... I too have been feeling low....I didn't know that I was doing at least one thing right I was still routinely tracking my finances. It's just been so frustrating having to go to my sinking funds to use for food but the most satisfying feeling about that is that I did not had to go borrow from anyone. This was a great message thank you ❤️.
