Very true, I find myself lucky enough exposed to money management at an early age. Worked full time when I was 19, purchased first home at 28, fast forward time... I'm 61 now, got laid off March 2020 amidst lockdown, a blessing in disguise. At once, I consulted an plannner to stay afloat and with subsequent investments, I'm only 15% short of $1m as of today.

Thanks to being diagnosed as diabetic in 2020, I quit my fast food fix cold turkey and started to prepare EVERY meal I eat. Working on managing carbs is not the cheap way to eat, but it allowed me to lose 25 pounds in the first year and brought my blood sugar into safe zone after 60 days - I have maintained my weight loss and my blood sugar is under control. By having to fix my meals instead of eating out, I was able to learn what I could eat and to stock up on items where I could on sale so my pantry has lower costed items than normal so now my "special" diet doesn't cost any more than a normal person. I now limit my grocery shopping to once per week and I routinely will look for marked down items to stretch my budget. I know the quality of the food I get at this grocer so I know how long those items will store once marked down. Years ago I was a junk food junkie who though nothing about spending $10 per day eating out. Now I spend less than half that for an entire day and I stick to the budget. Dave's way works!

That's impressive. Eating on 5 dollars a day is ridiculously difficult, and it's probably not the best food, but hopefully it's good enough. I mean I bought a fresh salmon filet to cook for dinner tonight and that cost me almost 8 dollars alone. So if you can feed yourself the entire day for 5 bucks, that sounds like some real beans and rice territory.

I love to eat out and I need to look forward to what I have brought from home to overcome the desire to go out. I pack a favorite piece of fruit I really like such as Cara Cara oranges, honey crisp apples, or cherries whenever they’re in season. Fortunately, living in California, there are microclimates all around me that allow people to have you pick orchards and farmers with farm stands certain months of the year for all of these fruits. However, these fruits also are available in grocery stores. My absolute favorite are fresh strawberries from the fields in Ventura and Oxnard. They taste sweet because they’re not gassed green for transport. Strawberries are the only fruit I refuse to buy in the grocery store. They are so much better when they’re allowed to ripen on the vine. I pack a sandwich made with cheese and meat I like with my favorite deli mustard. I bring mustard and mayonnaise in a little cup so the bread doesn’t get soggy. My favorite deli mustard is by Boars Head. If anonymous wants a brand of mustard available at Walmart Gulden’s spicy brown mustard. I like a little zing in my sandwich. I like sandwich rolls and butter lettuce. My favorite sandwich rolls are from a nearby town named Bishop, so I buy extra and freeze them. I also like Boars Head’s chipotle Gouda, smoked Gouda and three pepper Colby jack cheese on ham or turkey sandwiches. I also will make my own yogurt parfait with vanilla Greek yogurt, granola and fresh berries from the produce section. I make my own berry smoothies with Walmart’s antioxidant blend of frozen fruit, pomegranate juice, vanilla protein powder, ground flax seeds or chia seeds, vanilla Greek yogurt, and sometimes gentle harvest coconut water. If I don’t want to splurge on gentle harvest coconut water, I add regular water. I use a pinch of guar gum to keep everything emulsified. All of those ingredients are available at Walmart. Slow cooker meals are easy when you’re busy and tired. Since anonymous works at Walmart they sell regular sized slow cookers and small ones. Betty Crocker has two beef stews that are delicious and all of the ingredients are available at Walmart. One is Slow Cooker Italian Style Beef Stew and the other one is Slow Cooker Old Fashioned Beef Stew. The vegetable juice is V-8 or Walmart’s equivalent. Beef bouillon granules might not be available even though Maggi, Knorr and Wylers make them. You could just dissolve some regular cubes in water or smash them in a plastic baggie. Hopefully, these ideas help. I make more than anonymous but I was in the same position for a while and eating out was my biggest hurdle. I not only enjoyed my favorite restaurant food but after a stressful day of putting everyone else first (I teach high school) eating dinner out felt like pampering. Someone was serving me.

Everyday choices become lifestyle changes. Every day you walk your mile and think you might like a donut, and every day you say no to the donut. Eventually it becomes second nature and it's easier not getting the donut. Money is the same way. I mean I never had this specific problem. But like Dave's food thing I've had other issues I can relate too so ill translate it to financial. It's a tad intense. But have a no spend month. During that month you can only buy groceries, bills, gas, and emergencies. No streaming services. No gum memberships. No snacks. No pops. No coffees, no beers. Nothing. Just food you will eat during a meal. If you have a want, put it on a list. You can not buy it or you start over. One thing holding you back is borrowing. Doing that should help reset you so the borrowing isn't holding you back. It also helps you get creative. Well.. instead of going out with your buddies, maybe make a few drinks at home and watch a game on broadcast TV. Or maybe discover that local park. There's so many fun things to do that cost Nothing. The next month, you start slowly adding things back in. Do not resume your spending habits. What you do is add 1-3 of the most important things back. But only if you can afford them where you can still save money & NOT barrow. If you can not do that.. then you can not have that thing back in your life. So something needs to give. Sell a car. Downsize a house. Remove a less important interest. Get a better paying job. Etc. And you keep slowly adding things back but only the things you find the most valuable. And only when you can afford it.

Did Dave just indirectly quote KATE MOSS?! Nothing tastes as good as it feels to be thin/skinny?? Toxic disordered eating from the 90s/00s. But yeah, I get it, he saw it on the bumper sticker. But the quote still made my ears perk up.
