That sucks. I saw your rebuild video and it wasn’t some rushed half ass job either. I guess it’s just part of the game when you have fun reviving old stuff. Not sure how abundant Montero Sports are out west, but that body and chassis looks nice enough to where I’d just throw in the first used motor I could find.

I have a gen 2.5 that I will be selling in the winter. Expedition suspension from rocky road. Recent belt and valve job. "Not because the belt broke" 180k.

Man... just yank it all out, install fully blown block / power glide, beef up axel and SMASH on Trail Hawks..

sometimes you can find cheap lower mile engines from japan, I've used one of those in a Mazda and its held up for a year. I don't know if you could find one from a Mitsubishi though (it doesn't have to be a Montero sport)\ me and a friend built a ford engine once, got it running good, drove the truck around the block, and then I left. he drove it a few more miles and it seized up. we didn't put the oil pressure sensor in and i think the oil pump shaft fell out of place. he put a new crank and rods in the engine and it siezed up again ( i didn't help him the second time so I don't know what went wrong) he's building a new engine for that truck, a diesel this time. i hope third time's the charm holds true

yeah a cheaper engine, or better yet a whole parts car would be a good option if i thought it was worth getting it back on the road, but with the amount of time and effort it would take i'm not interested in getting into that, it would probably be cheaper just to buy a whole new sport that is working

This info is gold to the Mitsubishi Montero Community. Thank you for your service. Question-where do/have you found materials to repair a lifter tick. I have a 89 gen 1 LS that def has lifter ticks and I would LOVE to get it fixed. Any tips or tricks would be amzingly helpful. Best of luck with your part out work. RIP Montero Sport❤

Is the tick constant, all the time? Or only on startup? Chevys are famous for "lazy lifters". I ran mine for the last 12-ish years with this problem (albeit only @ 5K per year). From a cold start, the lifters would tick for roughly 45 seconds; DO NOT touch the gas! I let mine idle for about double that to make sure oil was flowing. After sitting for roughly 8 hours or more, the oil would drain out of the top end and you start over again. Sitting for only 4 hours? No tick, you're golden.

thanks for the encouragement! happy i can help people out. i seem to remember one company that makes lifters with bigger oiling holes for these engines.. but i can't remember who it is.. i suppose an OEM replacement would probably be second best

@@BattleshipSailorBB63 It comes and goes. Colder the engine, the louder the tick. But its definetly a lifter tick. Its not a knock or timing belt issues. I have a working oil pressure guage and while i will admit, its not perfect, but it does seem to be holding oil at 30-50psi. Any help is always welcome

Is it possible to drop oil pan and do bearing from below 🤔🤔

You have to pull the front diff to get at it, and even then, the issues is probably the crank. The only right way to do it is either machine down the crank and get oversized bearings or get a new crank which might need machining as well
