My mom teaches public school now, but when she was a stay at home mom, she taught me and my siblings. Oh how I wish I could have had a few m ore elementary school years with her. But she went back to school when I was in 3rd grade. I had a lot of anxiety as a kid, so home was my safe space. This environment you created for your kids seems so special, warm, and productive. This kind of upbringing will shape them in such a positive way for years to come! So happy to see your beautiful family thriving.

What made you decide to homeschool? It looks like you’re doing a great job!

There were several factors that led us to finally make the switch. It was a combination of feeling a strong desire to homeschool and having the ability to do so, and also not being happy with the school that they were going to. There were several really troubled children there, and I wasn’t satisfied with how the school handled situations. I also felt there was a lack of consistent educational rigor. They’ve already grown leaps and bounds since learning from home. 🙏🏻 I appreciate how their interactions with children during martial arts classes are based on shared values including: Respect, Discipline, Confidence, Integrity, Community, Friendship. 🙏🏻🙏🏻

I was homeschooled as well, although there are some aspects of that experience I would adjust in hindsight. Overall, it taught me to be a self-starter and to create my own routines. I’m hoping to balance my homeschooling experience with my kids' experiences. It’s a tough choice for parents these days, as schools aren’t what they used to be. 🫣😔

Hi Rachel! Watching from Germany, homeschooling is absolutely impossible over here, and I thought, while watching it, what a great alternative as long as the parents are doing it properly like you! I have the feeling the kids are so motivated and do have fun and also you, too!😌 I am thinking about the social aspect…..do they meet with friends then in the afternoon? Great job, anyway! @@irishussong8197 Hey there! They still get plenty of socialization through activities like martial arts, soccer, library visits, STEM classes, and labs, all of which involve other kids. We also have playdates with friends and their children often. A lot of the “socializing” in American schools can be deeply concerning. They were exposed to many disturbing topics at public school (from other kids their age), including violence, weapons, sexual references, and more. As this became more frequent and the school did nothing about it, I felt a greater responsibility to adjust their social environment. I feel much better knowing the children and families they spend time with, and I’m teaching my kids to set boundaries with peers who try to share uncomfortable information or bully them. I appreciate that their interactions during martial arts classes emphasize shared values like respect, discipline, confidence, integrity, community, and friendship. I believe this will help them better navigate challenges as they get older. 🙏🏻🙏🏻

Girl, this was great inspiration 🤩 We’ve been using TGATB curriculum for a few years and their Language Arts is the best!! My daughter absolutely loves it! I will have to check out the Kahnacademy math…kind of trying out a few different things 😉 Wishing you the best and cannot wait to see more ♥️

I really like TGATB, and I can see why so many others do too! 🙌🏻 It’s a solid curriculum that is easy to follow and understand. Khan Academy is good, but I’ve heard it’s not enough on its own. Math is my biggest concern since it’s not my strongest subject; however, I might consider outsourcing math as they get older if we continue.

We have been using The Good and Beautiful curriculum for almost 4 years now. My girls have become great readers and they love math. I love watching them learn new things.

I absolutely love the idea of homeschooling but our kids are hyper and social butterflies. How have they been being at home more? It’s probably area dependent but did you find there are maybe other homeschool mamas to get together with and do group learning as well? Sorry for all the questions! Weighing our options too. This is so brave. I'm so scared of having to send kids to public school if I have them because it's changed so much. I wish I could have been homeschooled in high school because I hated it and it negatively affected my university experience. Wishing your family well on this new journey!

@@ania5038 It’s such a tough choice for any parent to make, and it wasn’t easy for us. We tried hard to stay positive about public school, but we both realized it is becoming increasingly unhealthy each year. My kids may choose to go back to school when they are older, but I feel strong about giving them the strongest foundation (in the elementary school years) before they are exposed to that world again.

@@alexou186 We work from home, so they do what they did when they came home from school. They play independently or spend time with my husband until we do our afternoon extra curricular activities. They have their sports almost daily at around 5pm.

I loved seeing this video! We have a 2,5 year old son and a second baby coming in February and we are so unsure what to do education wise. The deadline for applying for nursery for our son is looming and o dear it's hard to decide what to do! We are not very keen on the idea of mainstream education because of some of the things they are taught (and the way they'd be taught) and the topics they'll come across at a very young age (like you said in one of your responses on a comment on this video) but the idea of homeschooling overwhelms me. Not the practical aspect of it, I feel like I would be able to manage that. But the idea of not having a 'break' during the day and insecurities about whether I'd be able to do it energy wise and emotionally. You say you finish the education aspect around lunch time and start your workday then. Have you been able to implement certain habits that allow you to do 'your thing' uninterrupted or would you say you rely on help from your husband/other family members for this? Thank you so much for your response in advance!

@@ahopefulhome I totally understand. I had all the same concerns. My kids are pretty good about having their approved screen time (learning shows, approved shows etc), and indepedently playing while we get work done. They have learned to be independent and respectful, but sometimes we do have to stop if there’s an issue. I don’t have family near by right now to help. My husband and I are very much aligned on this decision, and he’s a massive support system.. It’s a lot to consider, and I am positive we will run into some hiccups along the way. I’m not sure there is such thing as a perfect scenario, but we just try to do our best with our situation.

Homeschooling is not really popular here in Poland. Just a few people I know practice it, since it is hard to find good resources to get it going and good enough for the purpose of further education. I’m just curious - where do you find all the resources and how do you manage your anxiety of “not doing enough”?

@@kasiowelove1The anxiety of “not doing enough” is definitely real. I feel a huge responsibility toward their education. Building a solid curriculum and schedule for our routine definitely helps me with that fear. I’ve seen a lot of growth in their reading, writing, and math already. Additionally, their interest in discussing history, science, music, and art more openly has grown as well. In my research I found that many homeschooled kids in America are actually ahead in reading and math for their grade level in this country. The video I shared in the description gives a concise list of several other reasons, and curriculum ideas. I also check in on the local school district schedule regularly to get an idea on a general flow and pace (that could match a school) if we ever decide to send them back.

@ Yeh, I was homeschooled in junior high and high school through an outside program. I think parental excitement and involvement are crucial for a positive outcome. I learned to be a self starter and create my own routines, but I do wish my parents were more involved. My goal is to balance what I learned from my experience with my kids' homeschool experience.

Bravo on the homeschooling - again. Didn't y'all do that in CA, too? A good friend with a daughter Oliver's age has hired college-educated homeschool teachers to visit their home daily to educate their children. My friend is a WFH homemaker, and this is really helping to educate her daughter in the homeschool environment. My friend says her daughter (a bullying survivor, and that's why she chose to homeschool) is thriving! So, I applaud homeschooling. They do the Christian Montessori style. What prompted you and Byron to do this in Tennessee?!! Watch the big news channels every night with your kids - local, state, federal!

School is certainly not the only place to socialize, nor should it be. The key with homeschooling is that the parent is able and willing to plan accordingly. For some children, public school IS the best option, as it can be a better fit than being home with a parent who is unable to take on the responsibility of their socialization and education. 🙏🏻 It’s not an easy decision for any family to make. American schools have changed significantly over the last 15-20 years and continue to evolve. As a parent raising the next generation, I’m deeply concerned.

Hey, Rachel and Byron! Are you familiar with this? The Tennessee Homeschool Grant. What is the Tennessee Homeschool Grant? Each family participating in the Tennessee Freedom Scholarship Education Savings Account program will receive $7,000 per child per year to put towards their child's education costs in a private school or home-school setting if they decide to take their child(ren) out of public school. And you can also hire college-educated certified teachers to come to your home to give your boys the same education as their public school counterparts. My cousin and he husband are doing this for their little girl through this grant and love it. My cousin isn't legally qualified to teach her daughter in homeschool, but the teachers are. Please look into it!

@@Nabiilahbun I am the teacher for now. There are lots of options to find tutors, classes etc if anything becomes too difficult down the line. With homeschooling you can customize and outsource if needed. Right now I enjoy teaching all the subjects, and organizing curriculum and flow.

He’s still in them if we use a tripod, and I also speak about him all the time on my channel.. ❤️ We’ve been married 18 years, and are very much still together. Sometimes my family isn’t in the mood to be on camera, and I always respect that.
