When backfilling and compacting trenches, it is recommended do it it in layers. Like: add 4-6 inches of fill - compact it, then repeat! Trying to compact a trench after it is fully filled will most likely not give the desired results. Also, as you found out, running a compactor over mud isn't such a great idea.

I purchased a Harbor Freight plate tamper 5 years ago when I was building a paver block patio. In those five years, at least 10 friends and family members have also used it for their own projects. By far the best thing I have ever purchased from Harbor Freight. The only advice I can give is to keep the air filter clean.

Something to consider - using #2 gravel is good for a top coating on your driveway, but to establish a good base, try getting some bankrun- larger stones mixed with sand for a great driveway base. Then top with your #2 unwashed gravel.

Hi Al, those Predator engines are basically a Honda GX Series Clone. The big difference is the air cleaner and all the sheet metal parts (shroud, recoil, and gas tank). Those engines should always have the gas run dry if they are going to be moved or stored. Turn off the black fuel valve and let itself run the carburetor out of gas…then you have zero problems with the carburetor or gas running into the oil. Hope this helps you….

Al, I've had my HF plate compactor for almost a decade, it's been a great runner and for the money, I don't think you could have gotten anything else any better for the price. I also bought their portable sawmill earlier this year for the same reason, not to mention that every other brand I tried to purchase, had a 4-6 month period, before they could get it shipped. I got mine in 5 days and have been using it for months and if I had bought elsewhere, I would still be waiting for it to arrive. Enjoy seeing you and the content you put out there. It's been a wet year for you so far, not so for us here in the Pacific Northwest. I hope the weather settles down, so you can get everything accomplished before winter storms set in. Can't wait to see the tiny house get underway. Keep up the GREAT work!

Al, you created a hydraulic pumping effect using the compactor over the clay and gravel. Use your tractor and boxblade to spread the gravel and track it in with your excavator. The compactor is more for 2 or 3 inches of gravel on a flatter drained surface; sidewalk, driveway. Good luck, hope it works out for you. Be patient even though you have many irons in the fire. God bless you and your family.

Would have been smarter to buy a tow behind roller for the tractor. Filled with water it would compact deeper and faster. He hasn't a clue when it comes to spreading and filling. The same swale across the drive as when he started, just added a few inches over the whole thing. Needed to focus on filling the swale and not the two high areas. A roller would help a lot with compacting all his roads, which he won't get down with a plate compactor.

The new driveway looks nice and it will be interesting to see what's coming. A couple of thoughts. Why not give the driveway a slight crown so that any water can run off to the sides and more easily to the ditch keeping the center more stable. Also it could be useful to place a suitably large rock on each side of the driveway to mark out the culvert. That will be good marks for trucks and trailers to avoid accidental damage to the culvert ends.

I have a plate compactor from H/F and haven't had any problems with it yet I'm putting some wheels on it to make it easier to move around. That's the only thing I see to be a problem. I like your videos I'm hoping you get dry whether for you so you can get off to a great start on your build

Good save on Tippy the Excavator! Luckily your bucket arm was in the right position for you to right the 'Vator. Your water on the culvert might be a sign of a hidden spring?

I own many harbor freight tools, most I have found work just fine with a little adjustment now and then. It seems the bigger equipment is built from quality materials. I have never had one of their small engines but I have heard that they work fine.

Gina, Al bought a new tool again, don’t spare the rod.😂😂😂 cool, so many things to level off on the new property. Have a great week. God bless.🕊🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿❤️ p.s. definitely made for a chinese night, could have put a longer handle on it. Does the job well though.

Howdy there, Agnes! That is always funny when he says "don't tell Gina" as we all know she probably looks over his shoulder when he edits the videos - or maybe she does all the magic behind the scenes... or it's a group effort!

I ran Honda engines for 20+ years and came across the predator, it’s sort of a Honda clone some of the parts are Inner changeable, but I’ve run probably 15,000 hours through each one. Great machine. Gina that salad looks amazing, I bet it was yummy.

That's funny when you said putting John Deere oil in it might make it run like a Deere. That new tool is pretty impressive in how it solids the gravel up. The driveway is a lot of area to cover. It must have taken hours to cover all that. It looks good. Did I see you almost tip over clearing the leach field in the excavator? The GoPro did catch it because I did see it. That cucumber salad you made Gina looks delish. Nice dinner. Thanks for this video.

I use a small de thatcher (around $30) on the back of my riding mower to level out driveway or lawn (you can put on a few small blocks for added weight) THEN compact a level surface. But then again I buy STONECRETE - it cost more but turns into concrete. My second driveway is rock hard & level...

Vibration compacting tends to bring water up to the surface I'm told. If compacting wet areas, better to use pressure (weight) such as repeated driving over with track or wide tires.

I’m a fan of harbor freight power equipment. I have a bunch of generators I use on roofing projects, a welder and plasma cutter. If you treat the machines right you get a lot of value for the money. As far as those gas cans go, I have a few of the ones you have and think they are garbage, I like my old school round 5 gallon cans way better. Good job up there pal!

My husband and I were wondering why the heck you didn't have that so-called self built cabin shipped up to field and just add on to it? You're getting ready to build another house and you already have something that's built but just needs to be added on to. I suspect that would be a lot faster than building a tiny house from the ground up. To each thine own I guess

As others have said, fill and compact in lifts, doing it after will not compact even the top 6 inches well because the soil underneath is not solid. You might want to have some additional road base piled up near this area so when your dump trucks start coming in and compacting that you can immediately fill and grade to protect your culvert.
@StoneKathryn

That sounds like a really good idea. I think the dumptrucks can compact that driveway right?
