Some manufacturers started to produce cstand arms with flattened end on the rod. By to be honest the rod itself should not be used to lind lights, you should use a spigget into another pinhead to position your light. And be carefully then grinding avenger cstands, the rid is hollow, just grind a bit 😉

You should just boom out the knuckle side - then drop in a baby un the knuckle. You can then mount your light vertically and just use the tilt action of the lights stand mount to adjust your angle.

I use the second knuckle to hold my sandbag to counter balance the weight of the light. I also hate having to have loose baby pins laying around. -P

The issue I had years ago after grinding down a flat spot was the insert itself rotating in the tube. I ended up tig welding them to the tube.

I have about a dozen 5/8" baby pins (that fit into the C-stand knuckles) and ended up taking them to my local machine shop and had them dimple one side to prevent spinning lights. You are so right. It's SO frustrating!

As I understand grip arms are technically not meant for lights. They are meant for grip gear. And that makes sense since many manufacturers sell a dedicated boom arm.

Drill a shallow divot that is slightly larger than the screw and it will hold even better.

I had my buddy use his grinder to flatten a spot on my boom arm as well.

I mean... you could also wrap some tape around the thing, so the screw has more grip

STOP using a c stand as a boom, they are for flags and nets mainly. The grip arm on a c stand is not meant to be used as a boom for a light. However if you are using it that way, you are supposed to put a pin in the grip head and mount the light to that end. Only the cheap Asian brands even put the "spigot" end on the grip arm; Arri, Matthews etc leave that end smooth.

I honestly don’t even use C stands as much as I use the manfrotto boom. What are you supposed to use to boom a light? -P
@chrissetter4 ай бұрын
Probably a medium stand
@MrBobbydurston4 ай бұрын
@@FStoppers use a boom, a mini Math boom or the equivalent Manfrotto, something designed for the job.

I just looked that up and it doesn’t seem all that much more robust than the normal arm I’m currently using. I only boom beauty dishes and smaller hard reflector dishes; for 10+ years the grip arm has been perfect for this. I also use it to hold 4’ rolls of a paper. Are you saying this shouldn’t be used for that either? -P

That’s a great idea 💡.

Hey, Patrick. Hope your poops aren't bothering you.

Sometimes you just have to DIY your own solutions

I think the main problem is a lot of manufacturers aren't photographers so they don't know what we use, what we need. what would make everything easier!
