Oh my goodness, this is my life right now! My mother-in-law came to visit for the holidays and it doesn’t sound like she’s planning on going back home until AT LEAST February, 2022. I love her and have the utmost respect for her, BUT…she has the tendency to overstep boundaries and my husband definitely takes her thoughts and opinions over mine. I feel like I’m constantly being judged regardless of what I am or I’m not doing. I feel like a stranger in my own home and it makes for an extremely uncomfortable situation. Preach Bro. Lamb and Sis Ling!!! I agree with the both of you. I believe there are only three people who has a say in my marriage God, my husband and I. Now, if someone has an opinion including parents you are entitled to your opinion, but you don't have a say in this marriage. Our commitment was to one another before God. These boundaries should be set and discussed before marriage. We may seek advice in a situation, but as a couple we should be wise who we seek counsel from. People are good at giving advice from there limited experience whether good or bad.
@janetsmith21043 жыл бұрын
Lamb, you're spot on! Listen, I was in that situation 39 years ago...and hubby stated, "It was disrespectful to address his mother". Of course, his younger brother noticed the problem and called it out...which opened the door to she and I having an open, frank and respectful discussion 2 years into the marriage. Why, 2 years...I hoped he'd take the initiative, but anything longer. The marriage wouldn't have survived. My suggestion, don't wait or waste time... address any and all issues sooner than later. Trust, the Mom is well aware of her actions and manipulation.

Excellent, on time advice. This is truly a test of unity between two people. When a married man lets his mother take a position of control in his home, almost always he is avoiding confrontation and he is making the situation worse than it would be if he were respectful and yet direct with his mom. I wouldn’t let my mother or father come into my home and overstay their welcome or control any form of relational decision-making. Likewise, I expect the person I marry to cherish our commitment and unity with the same passion and wisdom.

The MIL need to respect boundaries for sure and if not as you stated the " son" need to find her a different living arrangement. How a week turned into a month is a huge issue IF it wasn't discussed with the wife . You have to be careful not to " create " unnecessary issues in your marriage becasue of outside influences that shouldn't even have access . Hello Ling and Lamb, It's a real struggle. It's especially problematic in Caribbean islander families. All I can say to you both is PREACH!. I agree wholeheartedly with your resolutions to this sensitive matter. I might add one thing, be careful regarding your complaints. The reality is as long as the respect is there, your mother in law does not have to like you. Your parents of course and your spouse. If you complain she's there for 2 months you want her there 2 weeks. Keep in mind your family will also have to ne the only 2 weeks. It goes both ways to keep the peace. Just make a mutual pact: no relatives can stay longer than x amount of time😅 Thank you for sharing. Stay safe and warm.

My mother in law once came to visit for a weekend five months later she was still there. Redecorating my house rearranging my kids room it was hell. I was very unhappy in my home and my kids were feeling it too so one day I nicely ask her to leave. She did and never spoke to me after that which was fine with me. I got my home back. 👍

Not nice!!!!! Where was your husband? It's your home, no doubt, but asking her to leave, no no no. It's not in your place. Flip it over, if your husband asks your mom to leave, will that seem right? Just as advised, let the son/daughter do the talking (my candid opinion)

I usually watch your videos and I don't comment. But you see what I notice is that Ling mother's did a wonderful work in raising up her daughter...cause she's humble to the ground and respectful to her husband Lamb...cause African's love even if a little respect and she does more than that..and Lamb is also a wonderful hubby to her.. cause he doesn't take her and her words for granted. And that's one of the key thing that holds a lasting marriage. Peace ✌️

Lamb is correct; some parents don't respect their children... Like how most of our African parents only give respect to elderly ones. If you are a kid or younger and you are even in the right, once they don't like your opinion, they don't take it.

@eddieokojie54253 жыл бұрын
@@kooffire Don’t worry, until you get there, you’ll realise what it’s it to pull it. It comes with a great deep and wide-sweeping experience, if properly used though. Don’t under-estimate it. It’s not cheap! Except some elderly people misuse it. And some ignorant younger people trample on it. There’s never any shortcuts to the experience that come with it. Especially, when the children are still very young and incapable of making wise decisions. That’s why you’re parents and are called ‘parents’, and ‘they’ are children, as they are called. You, their children, can never be older than them and be their parents. Therefore, they have the right and capacity to guide you in almost all the departments of life at that age, stage and time of your life. I don’t believe in this modern nonsense of ‘my children are my friends, my besties’. They are capable of making decisions that suits them before the age of say, 17 years, so that they’ll not be upset or offended when I make or influence their decisions or approach or attitude to life. What’s your purpose in their lives then? Is one of them not mainly to guide and lead them properly, sincerely and honestly at that stage of their lives. Though, as we all grow, situation may change, through gained experience, knowledge, understanding, world-view etc, start to differ.

This blog right here has got me so crazy because as I’ve stated previously I am married to a Nigerian man and this very scenario happened to me three years in a row where my mother-in-law came from Nigeria first time she came she was only supposed to be here three months and that three months turned into a year the second time she came she was supposed to be here six months that’s six months turned into a year and a half the third time she came she was only supposed to be here three months and that three months turned into nine months and it caused so many problems and so much contention in our marriage to where I just finally gave up like I don’t even know what to do the communication is definitely key but also more importantly than that is the explanation of cultural things because Nigerian culture and American culture are two different things completely and if the spouse who is Nigerian the husband does not sit the wife down to say this is custom this is how we operate and I need you to bear with me through this then you’re gonna have problems but I definitely appreciate you Ling and Lamb for addressing this issue and being extremely honest in how both of you feel about it.
@temitopeej84072 жыл бұрын
It is not the custom to overstay. There is a communication breakdown somewhere. Your husband should know when his Mum is arriving and when she is leaving. Who is extending her stay? I assume she has a return ticket. Who is changing the dates and why? After the first time, he should have made sure the dates are firm or at least let you know there is a possibility the date may change. But from this pattern you know to multiply the official timeframe by 3. That’s a shame because it does not build trust.

Lamb, I agree with you 💯 on the topic of dealing with in laws. One of the most important factors in a supoortive marriage is putting the relationship first. Your words show how much you respect and love your wife. Bravo to you sir! Much blessings to you both.

I am Hispanic and have been happily married for over 35 years and have 3 boys 28,23 and 17 and understand what you are saying, and it is true respect goes both ways. It all depends on the situation and culture a lot of families live under one roof for different reasons and make it work. Each spouse must understand that you are not competing with the mom, because you can’t the love you have for your child is totally different than your spouse! It’s not about he takes his mom side over mine. You have to put yourself in your spouse’s position and communicate with love how you feel without offending him or his mom. I would NEVER tell my husband it’s time for his parents to leave, that to me is disrespectful. I think talking to your spouse and choosing the right words of what are the long term plans for the parents and then come up with solution that you BOTH agree on. Love and understanding makes your marriage stronger and sometimes both sides have to give and take and comes compromise.

You're very correct. I think the problem here is that the mom was "coming to visit for a few weeks". Once that changed, a new conversation should have occurred with the husband and wife. Everyone should be on the same page.
