The British was directly responsible for 6 of the worst famine when they occupied lndia. Over 19 million lndian citizens died of hunger over the 200 years ,the worst was the Bengal famine caused by Churchill. He instructed that all the food produced by lndian farmers must be forcefully removed and given to the British soldiers and allied forces, leaving lndians with no food at all for months, many died of starvation. When Churchill was told of this in a letter,he replied " so why hasn't Ghandi died yet" .Do readers know that the British government never revealed their illegal occupation and stealing of all lndia wealth to its citizens. Their history books have absolutely no trace of lndian occupation. Churchill was actually worse then Hitler,a criminal for mass murder

There is no point in blaming the British for this particular event. They fuelled it that's for sure but if you're looking for a direct cause you need only look at your own politicians. This was a spectacular case of political power game going wrong. No point in blaming third parties.

The leaders at the time could have organised an orderly transfer of people from one place to the other. Why did they not? Apart from the British who bear most of the burden, where were the Indian and pakistani leaders? Why did they not foresee the tragedies? Incompetent leadership? Or just did not care?
