Actually it's good that she is open to renovation. My parents do not want to renovate and throw things out, so no matter what angle I tried to work, it failed badly.

Yes I think having the reno option helped because there’s a deadline for us to declutter by otherwise the reno works couldn’t start 🙏🏻 we understand how stressful it is.. We hope you’ll be able to slowly talk things through with them & find a solution that works for you soon 🫶🏻

unfortunately hoarding is not just about being messy or disorganised. having gone through this myself with a family member, there is an underlying mental disorder. it could be loneliness, depression or even the lack of control/fear of losing people or possessions. and it is often not discussed in Singapore. i think it's amazing how supportive your family is towards your mom :'), with the love and support, i am sure things will definitely start looking up

1:38 - such a valid point. Thanks for sharing this journey! Very heartwarming to see that the whole family is helping out in the decluttering 💯

Rachell, by the looks of the pictures Shawn and you posted and included in this video, Shawn’s Mother's hoarding situation is honestly not as bad as it appears to be. I've seen MUCH WORSE than Shawn’s Mother's Hoarding Situation. I'm from America, and there’s a TV Reality Series called “Hoarders”. I've seen many episodes of the series, and what they aired on TV was ABSOLUTELY HORRIFYING. 😳😳😳 Anyways, I'm glad that the two of you were able to help her out. Most importantly try to be patient with her, and continue to help her out in any way that you guys can. Hoarding is actually a type of disorder that can be or get really serious and dangerous. And, depending on the how bad or the severity of the hoarding, she might need some Professional Help in the future, to help her deal and manage her problem correctly, and in a healthy manner. Also, try your best to console her, because I know how Asians can feel, especially Asian Parents…whenever trying to deal with any problems they may have. Asian Parents try not to air out their problems to friends or other people, because they don't want to “lose face” or feel embarrassed. I know, because I’m a 41-year-old Asian Guy myself. I'm actually a Taiwanese who was born and raised in the US.
