Great advice about using less expensive things to start because you will "outgrow" your supplies. After I started to understand my personal preferences, I upgraded a few things and I noticed my artwork improved so much and the process was much more intuitive.

Hi Toby, I like to make my own Christmas cards in watercolour, and would love to attempt something in your unique style, which is brilliant. Any chance of a video in the future with some winter type scenes (e.g. threatening skies & snow maybe) cheers BJ

Very good tips along the video, thanks for this quick and thorough list. Thanks for the tip about carbon ink cartridges. I love the Platinum Prrppy butnhave been using a converter so far. You are right that it is common to outgrow your supplies. I started with that Cotman sketcher mini palette and loved it (still have it years later!) Paper is what I find makes the most difference. That Hahnemühle block is excellent, and good money for the quality it offers. Good paint + bad paper= risk of bad result. Student quality paint + good paper= chances of much better resukts. Thanks, Toby.

I tried the fude fountain pen at it was really fascinating! The nip has an 45 degree ankle so it is possible the get 1 mm lines and when you turn the pen a little bit- it’ll be 0,1 mm lines. When you sketch in „normal time“, it’ll be a continuous line, sketching quicker the line is disrupted and it looks really in a very loose style. (And fude pen is not expensive.) For me it’s a new way to sketch more loose then ever before.

OK, so I first watched this and thought - A fountain pen, why not? However, still not sure whether I will continue with this style I did buy the Preppy, it was less than £5, plus two pack of carbon ink cartridges. Including postage it was just over £11. I do like this pen, big surprise, and I will keep up with this style to some extent although I do like painting with some degree of accuracy. Thanks for the tip on this pen (pun intended).

My favorite brushes are: Raphael 803 Quil , Raphael 8408 No6/No2. Da Vinc Maestro 35 N06. Royal Talens Rembrandt Series 100 N8. Daler Rowney Graduate Liner No3 and a Hake. My favorite paints are: a mix of Schminke/Daniel Smith/Rembrandt/Van Gogh. My favorite papers are: Fabriano Artistico (in all versions!). Hahnemuhle Collection/Mould sheets. Watercolors are an expensive hobby and a very addictive one. Not suitable for lazy people.but totally pays off, if you insist learning and getting experience. It's hard to start, harder than any other, but once you get into it, you can't quit easily!

I’ve just refilled my Preppy original cartridge with Carbon Black and a syringe for the last 2 years… so no need to eyedropper convert or buy a separate converter … cheap pens. yes, but they always just work so I love them! I also just refill my empty Pigma Microns … don’t have to dispose of them if the nibs are still good…. Just tweezer remove the nib and syringe fill with India/Bombay ink, cheap and waterproof!

I have the same pallet I've put a few in the middle but under my pans I've drawn the pans and written the colours to the corresponding pans on a piece of paper I'm using ohuhu paints I got them in a set they seem to work OK for me at the moment as I've only been painting a few weeks

I will admit to using cartridges for my Platinum Carbon ink…a habit that goes back to a tragic accident in high school that led to a giant black ink stain on the carpet lol. But…I wanted to toss out a bit of info on that ink and the need for cleaning pens. I have a Platinum desk pen (one of the older, gold coated ones) and some super cheap Platinum Preppy fountain pens. I have had them for years, exclusively use Platinum carbon black ink cartridges and…uh…have never had to clean either of them. Not even once. The key feature is Platinum’s “slip and seal” cap sealing approach. Not all Platinum pens have it, but interestingly, the super cheap Preppys DO. In fact I just found a Preppy I thought I’d lost. It hasn’t been used in over a YEAR and…absolutely no issues with ink flow.

Yes indeed - the perfect seal keeps the ink from drying

Hi I went out last night to pick my stepson up after work and the moon looked so bright behind the clouds could you show us how to do this with watercolours I've seen it done with oils but can you make watercolours shine as good as oils
@TobySketchLoose Жыл бұрын
Hi Matthew - you sort of can, but not in the same way. I'll do a night landscape soon, it's a great idea. But it will be very much watercolour glow than oil shine

I have carbon platinum ink in a Lamy pen and I find it really doesn’t seem to be waterproof. What could be the problem? I have waited 15 min and it still bleeds into my watercolours. I compared it to my micron pens and my Pitt pen and it bleeds far more. Help!
