It's a trinidad pimento. I grew a plant 3 years ago. They take about 8 to 10 month to fruit but they produce so much. I dug one up and save it inside for the winter. The following year I let it stay out too late in the fall aphid got on it and gave it some disease and it died beginning of spring. They are very cold sensitive, they do best in temperature above 70.

@loishibbert51212 жыл бұрын
We have that pepper in our garden right in our garden. We're in Florida, but when we lived in NJ and had it, we had to take the plant inside during winter or it died in the cold. We have 3 trees right and there are many peppers on them. We send them to our friends that are up north. One year, we harvested 54 dozens from one tree. We love these peppers and as you said they're really full of flavor without the heat.

I bet it's a baccatum type pepper. They are generally super productive. I usually grow a few of them every year. They always require staking or a cage. Would love to give it a try! I didn't know figbid was used for stuff other than figs.
@TheMillennialGardener3 жыл бұрын
You can use Figbid for a lot of things. It's a better system than eBay and I already have an account, and I'd rather support the private gentleman that runs it over an enormous corporation like eBay. From talks with commenters, I believe this is a Trinidad Pimento Pepper. The photos on image searches are dead-on, and since it came from the Caribbean, it makes total sense. I still can't be 100% sure, but I'm 90% sure now. Thanks for watching!

It does look similar to a habanada, but it is not. It is an open pollinated variety from the Caribbean. From what I'm seeing in the comments, it is most likely a Caribbean/Trinidad Pimento pepper, which is a seasoning pepper and not a hot or sweet pepper. That makes sense, since this is neither hot or sweet. It would make interesting chili powder.
@kennythomas15003 жыл бұрын
I'm more of a spicy pepper guy, but amazed by the productivity of this pepper. Could be dried and used for coloring and flavor. How long did it take to germinate, on an average? And at what temperatures?
@TheMillennialGardener3 жыл бұрын
This pepper requires a seedling heat mat for good germination. It takes a long time - up to 2 weeks or more. Not a single seed germinated within the first week, and things didn't begin popping until the latter half of the second week. Those Jiffy greenhouses are good for this, but you must be careful with soil moisture. Because germination times are so long, you can't let the medium dry out or they'll fail, and you can't let them be too moist or they'll rot.
@kennythomas15003 жыл бұрын
@@TheMillennialGardener Thanks. I do have a heat mat, but usually use it in spring here in Los Angeles area, where nights are chilly and things warmup in the day.

I found this info: Could these be the the same? Aji dulce peppers are small, brightly colored pods that look very much like habanero peppers, though without the incredible habanero heat. The peppers start off green and mature to bright orange, yellow or mostly to a vibrant red. The pods can sometimes be wrinkly, though many grown with smoother skin and can vary somewhat from pod to pod, ranging from squat to round to oblong.
@TheMillennialGardener3 жыл бұрын
Judging from the comments, I think this is probably a Trinidad Pimento Pepper. I can't be 100% sure, but I think it's the most likely candidate.

@@TheMillennialGardener You're lucky. I wonder if they would be good for making Jamaican jerked chicken? We've always wanted to try that dish on the barbecue. I grew habaneros in a pot years back and the plant was full of peppers, but we never ate any of them because we never got around to finding a recipe for Jamaican food. Those peppers were "Scoville" prohibitive to eat fresh, but we should have a least tried them in salsa. Cheers!
@TheMillennialGardener3 жыл бұрын
@@archstanton9703 they won't produce the heat necessary for Jerk Chicken, so you'll need to supplement with something spicy. However, I think they would make an excellent supplemental pepper for more flavor. If you like it spicy, you're going to have to add some additional heat, but if you like it mild, it could work well.

How long did they take to germinate?
@TheMillennialGardener3 жыл бұрын
I think they took around 7-10 days. That's typically what a pepper takes. Sometimes, hot peppers can take up to 2 weeks. However, I use a seedling heat mat, which speeds up the process. Not using a mat, they can take longer.

Those were the only seeds I was able to save for the year. It was a very limited offering. I just started some of the seed I saved for myself this past Thursday and they are already germinating 4 days later. 2 out of the 6 seeds I planted have germinated. Are you using a seedling heat mat? This variety of pepper is from the Caribbean and requires a lot of warmth to germinate because it is a tropical pepper. If you do not use a seedling heat mat, they may fail. Room temperature germination is not enough for this variety.
