@@NickFisherman actually, this is exactly how you check for landmines. My neighbor is in the military, as an explosive expert and his main job is searching for mines. I showed him this and he said: "someone must have thought those birds how to do this, because this is EXACTLY how we look for mines." His words. And he has been doing it for 30 years. So I think I trust the expert a little more than you!

@@transforgokumoving light soil is easier when shifting all your weight on it to try and detect hollow points created by worms, bugs, etc. Or even just the sheer spectacle of the ground now moving is likely enough to get worms and bugs moving, making them easier to detect Trying to scan an area by repeatedly digging out small bits with your beak basically means a big fat hurry to fatigue
