In this case, the lack of arms is probably an advantage. Obviously horrible to have lost them and the advantage isn't unfair, but i can see him being just a lot more streamlined than the other competitors that have to keep their arms by their sides

@@jenkem4464I think they are normal pads. A soft pad would reduce your time as it would take longer for the impact of their heads to be processed by the sensor. Despite this normal pads tend to be plasticky with a bit of give compared to a solid tiled wall.

As a swimmer myself, I can affirm that swimming 50 m meters under 30 sec is already a great achievement with an able body. Swimming it under 30sec without arms just kicking is INSANE. Some elite swimmers can't even do that with a kickboard

All needed to say, having no limbs and no upperbody musculature probably makes you lighter and aerodinamic, so the impulse by legs would be bigger. I have no idea about physics, just speaking by my mind.

For para swimming, the wall is foam-padded (though they might also currently pad the wall for conventional swimming events, not really sure about that). It is not as soft as it sounds, but it is soft enough to prevent concussion (though you are supposed to slow yourself down at the very end and there are markers underwater to alert you to the closeness of the wall). Very recently, they are using "dome caps" that are like regular swim caps but with built-in padding.

@@BGTech1 that's just not true and you will learn otherwise when you study fluid dynamics. Laminar flow is dominated by viscous forces in the fluid and a smooth interaction in the fluid-surface area which induces a lot of body drag. Turbulent flow has much less drag. Airplanes and cars are streamlined to avoid fluid detaching from the surface and creating pockets of dead air, this is called aerodynamic drag / stall and is very bad for cars and catastrophic for airplanes.

There is no “underwater 50m freestyle” it’s the 50m freestyle, they stay underwater for as long as possible till momentum runs out then they come up and start swimming the fastest way known to sports science, they have the amount of kicks and meters per the initial breath pre loaded in their head, a sports scientist working with their coach has formulated it, based off years of training. Some swimmers with body hair even keep a tiny patch of their underarm hair long, because they r literally looking at it to gauge when momentum is lost from the initial dive in

the physics behind that is insane. by not breaking the surface tension over his head he saved a lot of energy by reducing hydrodynamic drag, which both made him faster and made his stroke more efficient.

Sure he is swimming hard and burning more oxygen, but he is also lighter and as a result can move the same distance with less energy exerted. Arms also would normally weigh you down, they have little buoyancy.

Not only is this super impressive as a physical feat, but the amount of focus it must take him to swim like that without breaking the surface tension is insane. He has to keep his head so fucking still for that to work, he's gotta be constantly stabilizing to offset the movement of his legs

I was hanging out with my friends, and I freaked out when I saw this. They of course all thought I was weird because, none of them swam like me. So they didn’t get how batshit crazy this was. It was like showing your friend a meme, and they don’t laugh at it. That feeling is what I got.

​@@Yesna they're saying that using just your legs and still swim this fast and for such an extended period is crazy endurance and strength. pay attention how all the other competitors are using their whole body. next time you're in the water try doing that with your legs, see if you can last 10 seconds at full strength and how fast you can actually go.

*I know it'll sound weird, but those are the most beautifully amputated arms I've ever seen.* Still got shoulders and collarbones, has no scars that could ruin a nice shape and it's really symmetric. Whoever did this is a great surgeon. Let's applaud to this person as well.

One of the interview ask that question, his response was if have to lift his head up the water to check the finish line it will affect his speed, so instead he just give up check the finish line and go all out every time(including practice)
