On August 17th, 2018, I had a stroke. This allowed me to confront death head on. Here are my thoughts on what I would call Memento Mori ("Remember That You Will Die").
Robert Greene is the author of the New York Times bestsellers The 48 Laws of Power, The Art of Seduction, The 33 Strategies of War, The 50th Law, Mastery, The Laws of Human Nature, and most recently, The Daily Laws.

Thank you so much for sharing this with us. My husband died having a stroke at age 33 leaving me behind with two small children in 2014. I’ve learned so much from you since then and you helped me with many things to make sense of this experience and dealing with becoming the primary caregiver. I’ve learned back then that death can come at anytime. I appreciate you.

Robert Green, thank you Your book, the law of human nature, saved my life. I was able to break through the dark ages of my life. I don't know how many times I cried after reading the book I read all the laws of power, the laws of human nature, the laws of Mastery, the art of war, the 50th law. I even gave this book as a gift to all five of my beloved friends. You're the best mentor of my life

I’m married and looking forward to children soon. I don’t deserve any of it.

Mr Greene, I wish you all the best and hope you recovery as best and as quickly as possible. Years ago I have read your books and then read everything of and by Seneca, Cicero, Epictetus, Musashi, Aurelius, Schopenhauer, and more. This stuff is super powerful. This stuff makes one truly grow. I have never been the same since. It's really great that you and Ryan Holiday are waking people up with your books and messages. It is no coincidence that the samurai enjoyed their tea ceremony to the smallest detail. They all maintained that one must learn how to die, like learning to do anything else. Cicero explained exactly why one should not fear death (and wow, is he convincing in his writings, and did he walk the walk!). Here in the modern west we are generally too dumb to understand this stuff, we think we are so smart. It is a shame for the bad acts to harm others in any ways, considering how we will all end up in the same place. If everyone would read these books, and learn these lessons, we would all think twice before being stupid and crazy. To start with, we would bitch and moan a lot less. ''When we are young, we think of death as something external to us, something that only happens to others. But we should always keep in mind that death is always lurking in the corner, ready to jump out at us.''. ''Time! Always chasing us, like a taskmaster with a whip!''. ''Every day resembles a little life. Waking up is like a little birth. Afternoon, like a little youth. Going to sleep, like a little death.''. -Schopenhauer

Once, I was almost drowning in the sea and after I escaped, it gave me a strong sense about how close we can be to death and motivated me to do things I want to do before I die. Few years has passend Since then and it lost its strenght to remind me the death, it might Sound weird But something inside me wants to have a similar experince again, so I can motivate myself to contunie the things I want to do again. In our busy lifes we keep procrastinating things we want to do, by saying 'I will do them when ..... ends' but whenever something ends another starts. There Was a movie where a man learns that he will die soon by an disease, it might Sound like He is unlucky because he will die, but its exact opposite! He is pretty lucky for understanding how death is close him. So he gives up his Job and starts to do things He always wanted to do. Most of us will not have a Chance to do that things and on our deathbreath we will be in full of regret. Thank you for reading so far. I hope I didnt killed English too much lol.

Hi Robert, I believe having a NDE can be liberating as it does give that sense of urgency to life, and a sense of appreciation for the things we may have otherwise taken for granted. But on another note I'd be interested to know your thoughts when someone receives a terminal diagnosis from a doctor, the diagnosis being based on their opinion and on average life expectancies for specific illnesses. My issue is that the docs are often wrong and that many people go on to outlive their dire prognosis, but for others it paralizes them in fear and many people die as soon as they reach their predicted expiry date. Doctors always paint the worst case scenario and never tell patients that others may have totally reversed a 'terminal' diagnosis- they seem to think that might be giving people 'false' hope. I really don't get that as no hope is false hope. I fear that the fear if death for many can be so debilitating that it brings about the inevitable sooner.

I was very lucky. I had a very, very, near death when I was 23 years old. I, and three other people should have died because of my actions in a deadly moment. When death didn't happen as it should have. That's when I became convinced that there was, indeed, a God. I'm now 72 years old. The three other people never knew how close they came to an early death, but they later had pretty rough lives. Meanwhile, my life has been charmed and blessed, these past 48 years. Once in awhile something, like your video, reminds me of that fateful cold winter's night in that rickety old tin-roof farm house.

Mr. Greene, you have my utmost respect as a writer, or I could say, my living teacher. I have a question that could be regarded as insulting but it is not demeaning because I am genuinely curious. I know with your multitude of knowledge and now, experience, it’s only natural that you have this perspective about the sublime. But what I mean to ask is, now that you have lived a certain lifestyle, enjoyed it I could say and have near death experience that disabled you from going out there to continue enjoying or exploring all kinds of worldly experiences-which makes one wanting to live again tomorrow for another day, is it advantageous to think of life the same way you think of it when one is young and is excited by his aspiration for a bright future ?

Robert I ve read all your books and just saying that I am alive because of you , is an understatement. Currently I am reading your " daily laws " everyday. In this December when you talk so much about death. I meditate on it and it really helps me. But I have only one question to ask you. Does not thinking and meditating about death brings it closer to me? Like this law of attraction or something...... If u got time please do answer this. May be it might help you in your new book as well. If u don't believe in law of attraction, its fine. But,There certainly are some people like me, who have read about stoicism and following everything in it except this. How will u justify memento mori for us?

I hear so many times that when people die and if their told they have to go back they usually don't want to. You seem like you couldn't wait to come back to this so called life on this messed up planet. Idk ...i am currently in midlife crisis and searching for answers to what this life is all about and i would really appreciate your take on all this. At this point in my life i almost think i would prefer to be in my energy form (which i am coming to the opinion that is what we truly are is light beings sent to this hologram called earth for some kind of bs lessons) Thank you michael
