Expounding on “Bursty Spending”: If Charlie Sheen sleeps with a playboy bunny, it’s just another Tuesday to him. However, if he asks the bunny to sleep with a random homeless guy, it’s going to be the greatest day of that guy’s life. I want to feel what the homeless guy feels not what Charlie feels. According to the “hedonic treadmill” we get used to everything and it becomes normal to us. So in order to feel the rush again, we need to renormalize our base level standards lower again. This is convenient because it allows us to also save money and execute this lifestyle within a fixed budget. As for the suffering of having to live at rock bottom, it isn’t wasted time. Experiencing hardship builds character and sharpens your judgement. Politicians like Mitt Romney are criticized for being born into privilege and not being able to relate to the poor. Guys like McCain were praised for having suffered through being a POW. Experiencing hardship gives you the right to speak on it and the perspective to understand it. It is life experience and you grow as a person from it. An example is heartbreak. As a child, I found sappy R&B songs to be so corny, and couldn’t understand why they were popular. Then my first gf in HS dumped me. I heard “End of the Road” on the radio and it hit so different I almost cried. I could relate to the lyrics and emotion behind them now. It took heartbreak for me to unlock that perspective. Well rounded adults with keen judgement have experienced a lot in life, and that’s why we trust them and give them leadership roles. So there is no downside to adopting a bursty spending lifestyle. You gain value on both the upside and downside. Also, here’s the foundational video I keep referring to: kzbin.info/www/bejne/hqDLmImopMt9eKcsi=OgwD3043DUAHIIGi

Bursty spending is something most average people do though the delta is more proportional to net worth. I have been living like this my whole adult life. I eat canned food and salad most days and then have a $500 meal and $3000 trip 1x a year with another smaller trip. The delta is definitely the marginal utility that is not appreciated enough in the scheme of growing wealth.

That makes a lot of sense. I’ve sorta practiced this my entire life ever since I was young, I’m 20 now. From small things like dinner, you know? Your mom gives you your vegetables and stuff you don’t like, I would eat that first so I could savor the best part of the meal (usually the protein). Currently been practicing fasting as well, I do up to 68 hour fast, you let go of this like gluttony for a day or two, starve yourself so you could savor every bite of everything. You become grateful and thankful, you would even smile a bit . The clarity, and health benefits is another reason why I do it. I currently live very frugally, like most days I’ll eat something, you know, for function, like boiled eggs, milk stuff like that. Then other days I eat for pleasure, anything I want almost, steak, burgers, pizza etc. It’s beautiful really. I also like to dopamine detox although I haven’t really done it in a while.

this is tough to do if you have children (just had my first), so i think something comparable would be owning your home outright in a low cost of living part of the country. if you have a paid off home and it's only worth lets say 200k to 250k, the property tax will be low enough you'd barely notice it. with a work from home remote income and starlink, you can achieve this anywhere in the country now. although not as cheap as living out of your car its about the best you can do while still being able to raise children comfortably and have the freedom of time you describe. i'm renting and investing capital until i can pay cash for a house (avoiding a mortgage completely) and i'm getting close. once i achieve that, i will be completely free.

Very interesting perspective. It’s original, that has value. It’s self discovery, which has huge value. Mathematically justified, yes. But we are human, not machines. Currently you are not fostering family which has infinite value. And mathematically memories fade, your future self will benefit higher value from experiences closer to that current time frame. Also huge inflationary spikes always happen and you have to over build wealth to guard from that. 4M is not nearly enough. 10M minimum at your age for true freedom and greatest probability of happiness as we age and health inevitably declines. But I’m 99% sure you’ll get there, because you don’t have blinders, are smart and on your own path. Good luck brother.

@LitNomadАй бұрын
@@localphonicss I’ve owned real estate in the past. While there are many crafty tax benefits if you use them, I don’t like it as an investment vehicle because: 1) I don’t like the maintenance 2) I get wanderlust and can’t stay in the same residence for over 5yrs. 5yrs is the average cutoff point where you’ll turn a profit on your home price appreciation to offset selling costs. 3) it’s too dependent on local variables like the local economy and local government. 4) it’s illiquid 5) it’s riskier than stocks (you can go underwater. Many did in 2008. I don’t leverage up 5-to-1 in stocks) Real estate doesn’t have “better gains” than the US stock market. There are many studies done on this so you can look it up. When factoring in maintenance costs, property taxes, etc, historically they perform about the same, but Real Estate is riskier since you’re leveraged. It seems you got lucky that your primary residence outperformed real estate elsewhere in the USA, and you’re now measuring that as the average ROI of real estate in the USA. There are many counties where real estate drifted down for the last decade. Lastly, I don’t have bag lady syndrome. I’m 100% in VOO and QQQ. Most wealth advisors would call that reckless and advise an early retired person at my age to be 50% in bonds, but I have my reasons since I am a Wall Street insider and I understand the equity market (and especially options plays) better than outsiders. I can make clever adjustments when the market crashes. I keep my annual withdrawal around $50k-$80k because I want to keep my LTCG below $47025 to pay 0% taxes on them. This video is about how to experience the most on that relatively small annual budget. I just don’t like giving away money to Uncle Sam but I’m not risk averse at all.

I lived in the Philippines in a newer gated complex 2016 - 2022. I went back to the US and lived in Woodland Hills, Ca. 2022 - 2024. June 2024, I am back to the Philippines gated complex (constructed 2014). My rent is $240 a month. Hence I am living way below my means. I doubt You would need to work again. You probably have a better rate of return on your investment than I do. Nonetheless, if you are getting 14% like me, that would be about $560,000 annually on 4 million. Granted Uncle Sam will take a chunk but, I doubt you would need to work again. I sure wouldn't but, I worked a grind job.

@@UnpopularFeed I wouldn’t “trade” at home. I think all of trading outside of Wall Street is a scam. If you think you’ll be in the same town for at least 5yrs, I think the safest bet is to buy a property and either rent it out or airbnb it. You can even hire an airbnb manager to handle your day to day. This also assumes the rent to mortgage ratio is good for your area. I myself prefer more passive investing, so I dump most of my money in VOO. Understand though that it can lose 50% (that’s the worst sell off since stock markets have been tracked in the USA). Great Depression was around 70% but there was also deflation, so in real economic purchasing power, it was a 50% drop. If you can stomach a 50% loss, VOO is the best passive place to leave your money. You just have to not puke and sell when it’s going down, because you might sell at the bottom and miss the bounce. You have to just decide to leave it there and let it ride and ignore the financial news pundits who are always wrong anyway.

I guess the obvious answer is CS with a specialization in AI/ML. However, the medical industry is impervious so pre med if you can handle blood and guts and seeing gross stuff in the ER, and if you’re from a rich family that will spoil you when you’re a brokie all through med school and residency. 4M doesn’t really work for Bay Area start ups. Yeah, you can geo hack, but if your wife wants to live in Cupertino and have your kid go to Lynwood High, that number isn’t gonna work; you end up at a startup making 150K with a possible 5M+ earn out, but you’re waiting for 5-10 years. It’s better to grind it out in FAANG for 500K+ annually. It’s especially frustrating if you have that 10M+ equity in a unicorn and it implodes or they just won’t give early employees liquidity. @@samk896 thanks for the comment. I am fully aware of the value people derive from parenthood and raising children. We are animals, and it is basically in our dna 🧬 to seek this. The reason I don’t is because in the west, modern feminism is undergoing a social engineering experiment that has broken the tacit contract between the genders within long term pair bonding. The unintended consequences from this will surface over the next few decades but it isn’t good. Divorce is incentivized now, and infidelity is normalized and celebrated (Olivia Pope from the show Scandal is cheered on by women for breaking up a home, etc). Marriage is a -EV bet now in the west. The manosphere guys do have this point correct. I would still consider marriage if the woman is from a conservative culture outside of the USA and understands the zero sum dynamic between the genders, and doesn’t abuse her power at my expense. The population is shrinking in the west, and it’s why we import so many immigrants now. You might want to ask yourself why the majority of men agree with me and not you in terms of family creation. There is hidden wisdom in the consensus of large groups. That’s why we trust democracies for example.
