Hello WJ Handy Dad. as a first thank you for subscribing to me. I myself have seen a lot of your repair videos. They are really great but I am happy if I will never need the instructions, because it is difficult and expensive to get spare parts in Germany and even more difficult is to find someone who knows about repairing American cars. That was also my decision to buy Ford and not a Chevy or Dodge. Ford is still reasonably widespread in Germany, Chevy and Dodge not at all. Thank God I do not have to bother with the weird cylinder deactivation system, which seems to be a real problem with your Chevys in the US (I'm curious when and if Chris brings the Tahoe back to life.) Now on the subject of German Autobahn: I guess US Guys love the subject, it's the most clicked video of mine. OK, I'll produce a second "high speed Autobahn" video next spring (right now the vic sleeps into a winter storage barn) I have a highway section with no speed limits nearby, this should work, although I'm a little scared that I'm overloading the Vic because the vehicle has been drive only slow and smooth in recent years. If you think about that a good Vic in Germany easily costs 15,000 dollars and spare parts are expensive and rare, you can certainly understand that the drivers (and me, too :-) are driving very careful with the cars here. That P-71 police interceptor is fully capable of maintaining 140+ mph ,that's what it was designed to do, and the tuned suspension and the z rated tires will handle that speed with ease. So punch it, and stop getting overtaken, it won't break.

They never quite engineered good fuel mileage for these (Ford is not known for good mileage across their line: V6, V8, etc); when the government pays for it, it doesn't matter--when YOU pay for it, fuel costs matter!

(Never really happens) 320 kmh. but i tend to not want to overtake traffic too fast, relatively speaking, when you go 120 kmh faster than the cars you overtake, they fly past your view, and it gets bit scary. But without traffic, 320 kmh is the limit. Been doing this for 5 years so i kinda know the drill by now ;)

Having driven Crown Vics for over 20 years in my career, I can attest that you can’t harm the engine, they get terrible gas mileage, and the top speed is 129 mph OR 139 mph depending on what rear gear it came with. It will run comfortably at 110 mph (sweet spot) with no issue...except for guzzle the gas. Fuel range is dependent on the rear axle ratio as well.

I had a Interceptor for a while. I'm like you, I don't push hard on my vehicles. I miss that car, at 80 MPH that engine was just thinking about waking up. Basically resting your foot on the gas was 80 mph. But believe it or not, I could lock the cruise control on at 70 mph with the AC on, and it got 25 to 27 mpg. One day I will have another one.

From removing my driver’s door panel, looking under the rubber floor mat and behind the back seat there is no or very scant sound deadening material on the police version, at least the 2011 one I have. The civilian versions, the ones I’ve seen taken apart on KZbin anyway, have it in the places I mentioned, giving them the quiet ride Ford/Lincoln/Mercury has been known for. Also, in Canada, the speedometer shows km/h in bigger numerals than the mph, which are inset from the former. If the Crown Vics had been assembled in the USA I doubt you’d see km/h anywhere. Also the safety label on the driver’s sun visor is in English and French, regardless of whether the car was destined for the US or Canada.

Indirectly he is correct. 81 mph here is wreck less driving. I’ve driven on their autobahn and there are some crazy speed demons there. Most us drivers never will know what it’s like to drive over 100 mph on the average.

I have seen three different older Mercedes W123 with the OM617 turbo-diesel I-5 go more than 500K miles. One was nearly 800K miles and still running. That engine is probably among the most reliable ever built. I think Mercedes quality declined when they merged with Chrysler but has recovered somewhat since they split up.

I noticed you did not go in the left lane when you passed a vehicle on the shoulder that looks like it belongs to the German equivalent of the Department of Transportation. In the United States, it is required by law to move over and slow down for police, fire, rescue, or other vehicles with orange lights. Are there similar laws in Germany?

Frank, I own a 2011 last year made. Black with tinted windows and full wheel covers for the "street appearance". This was a patrol supervisor take home car for a local sheriffs office so it wasn't hammered on regular daily patrol. It was involved in a high speed pursuit but other than that it was used lightly with 76k miles and 300 idle hours. I paid 3400$ at auction. Best deal ever. Don't be afraid to get right on it Frank, its good for it!!

Last year I picked up an ex sheriffs department '08 Crown vic interceptor for under $1200. 125K miles and still tight. Good tires and 3/4 tank of fuel to boot! They still come up at county auctions, last I saw was an '11, don't know what it sold for. The heavy duty chassis package is pretty amazing for that heavy car. A friend needed a car pretty badly and my Vic was a good fit for him. Wouldn't say no to another if I found one at auction again, these cars are beasts!

It was the last year for the CV, so they were just using up parts and the last year didn't get all the goodies the earlier ones did. Still, they were great cars and made me appreciate Fords as they were very easy to work on.

Your Crown Vic, without light bar will cruise quietly for hours at 140mph. I know (I have owned several P71, modified LX Sport, and Mercury Marauder). 120mph if you want to keep gas mileage at 19-20mpg. Congrats on your purchase. Please have the suspension, steering system checked carefully. It is 2007, and might have had some car chase abuse, especially police jumping road curbing. These cars are certified for up to 10” curbs without damage. However, police duty they are rough in cars. While doing inspection, suggest you replace any bushings with new P71 or solid synthetic bushings (even better) on all control arms, sway bars. Makes a huge difference to go with after market solid synthetic bushings, and still keep a smooth firm ride at speed. Once your suspension checked out well, check the date code for the tires. If they are mire than 6 years old, suggest you get new ones. Have the wheels and tires “Road Force” balance. If they pass a road force balance at .1 graham, you will not feel any vibration at 140+mph. Inflate your tires to 41 pounds up front, and 38 pounds in back. They will run very cool, handle very well, and get good gas mileage. I have several brand/models of tires if your would like advice. Purchasing new shock absorbers (if needed) is a low cost upgrade. Factory P71 shock/struts work great. There are other after market brands designed for police and other heavy duty use. They should be firm enough for you, yet keep a smooth ride. There are after market springs that are stiffer than stock P71 Springs. Not needed unless your car’s Springs have been abused, or have more than 100,000 miles of police duty. Check the transmission for clean fluid. Please flush completely and change filter if you have no record of maintenance, or more than 30-50k miles since last change. Use Mobile One synthetic specific to Ford, if you can afford. Also change the rear differential fluid. Use Mobile One. The lighter weight works great. Add the friction modifier if called for on the limited slip clutch pack. Inspect your wheel bearings. Again, they are designed for heavy duty off road use. However if abused, they will need to be changed. The brakes are very effective. Use the P71 brake pads, or higher. There are after market cross drilled and slotted high temp disc rotors. And ultra high temp pads available. The engine is mostly bomb proof. Unless it has been abused in maintenance. Change oil with Mobile One Extended Drain at factory weight recommendation for P71 (police version of Crown Vic). Check spark plug gap and age. Keep them at factory settings. Many times plugs are not changed, which will cause the Spark coils to go out. The engine will run fine with over gapped plugs, but adds stress to the coils. If needed, Please flush and refill with water included lifetime radiator fluid. Check the single drive accessory belt. These last a very long time. Especially if equipped with Goodyear P71 Gatorback belt. The hoses are already 100% silicon. If someone has not taken them off, they are called here in USA “one million mile hoses”. They last almost that long. The Ford modular V8 motor design and patents were licensed by a Mercedes back in the 90s. There were TV commercials made about that back then. This motor is bomb proof in stock form, and can be boosted in horse power to 400hp without internal modification. There are supercharger kits to do just that. Point is, this drive train will cruise at between 120-140mph all day long without harm. The P71 also has a special “metal matrix” drive shaft for long term high speed cruising. I would trust a 2007 Crown Vic over some new VW Golf, or Toyota, or BMW 2/3 series on long distance sprint on your highways. In proper condition, the Crown Vic is that safe and easy to drive. A real “sleeper” on your highways. Keep at least half a tank of gas when storing the car. The fuel pump needs to be submerged and moisture free. Use Stabil fuel stabilization if you are going to store the car and not drive it much. This will take up to 10% of the BTU content out of the gas, but keeps the gas from breaking down. Please use a Chevron or similar fuel injector/carbon cleaner, double strength every 3k miles. These are all cheap insurance to keep your motor strong and trouble free. If you run “premium” gas, you can purchase aftermarket computer programmers that can increase horsepower by 10% or so. Good news, parts are uber low cost for a Crown Vic. Anything listed above should be able to have shipped directly to your house from USA at a low cost. Hope to see more videos with your prize on the Autobahn. The shock value of passing some people who think their cars superior, will be classic. Since their are 200 or so Crown Vics in Germany, I can’t wait to see the looks on their faces. I suggest you take off the light bar for any long distance running at over 110mph. The light bar add too much wind noise, in my opinion. And takes around 3 miles per gallon off the fuel economy when 85mph+. You mentioned your concern about gas consumption. With right front end alignment, tires and their pressure, state of drivetrain tune, you should get over 20 miles per gallon at 100mph or more. Running 75-85mph, 24-27+ miles per gallon. Not bad. Steady state cruising will allow the computer to optimize the motor settings for best gas consumption. Be smooth with the throttle while cruising. Makes a big difference. Hope this all helps. Let me know. Again, congratulations on your P71 find. A affordable, comfortable, unusual, safe, reliable, low cost speciality car for Germany.

America cars weren't always so weak-kneed. I have a 1969 Lincoln Continental, had it since 1982, an older friend of mine told me he had one just like it, would fill it up in Knoxville, Tennssee, get on the Interstate, set the cruise control on 100 MPH, & drive to Atlanta. He'd have to slow down often, they were building the interstates then, but it was roughly the same distance you drove that day w/yr new Crown Vic. The Lincoln would go thru a whole tankful of gas, but they were VERY heavy-5000 LBS, & had 460 cubic inch-Roughly 8 liters-sized V-8s. Nobody in America cared what gas cost then, & if you could afford a Lincoln, you cared even less. Yes mine has the lovely-and slightly odd-"Suicide" rear doors.

Nothing is going to explode - this is not some piece of junk BMW (I've owned these disastrous money pits) or breakdown special Mercedes (owned these rolling garbage heaps too) In 2015 I bought a new Cadillac (the big one) for $72,000. It broke down in the middle of the highway in two weeks. Sold it and bought and eight year-old CVPI for $3,500. This is an actual CAR! I spent a few thousand dollars over the years upgrading it: LED interior and exterior lights, back up camera and GPS, remote starter and locks, alarms and disablers, performance and efficiency engine mods, good stereo and phone system, upgraded carpet and upholstery, wheels and tires while retaining a 100% stock external appearance. I have a total of about $8,000 in the car. little more than 10% of what that piece of Junk Cadillac cost. And that $60,000 difference is in the bank. This solid steel - body on frame baby starts every day, goes up to 120 - 130 mph without any hesitation or drama - drives steady as a rock, replace worn out parts dirt cheap - any mechanic can work on it - enough room in the HUGE trunk for TV's, air conditioners, computers, golf bags, coolers, microwaves, suitcases and kitchen appliances ALL at the same time! A rear seat your co-driver can stretch out and take a nap in while you drive, heater and a/c unit can take you comfortably from Alaska to Brazil, doesn't mind rough roads or a couple of 300 pound passengers and a 290 pound driver and won't use a drop of oil for the first 250,000 miles and will get 22 mpg on the highway. Buy a ten year-old one cheap, drive it for another ten years then sell it for what you paid for it. THAT is a car.

Currently I have planned a first motorcycle trip (see the video for my travel blog) For this I have bought a motorcycle in Anchorage (KLR 650) with which I want to drive down the coast. The bike will remain in the USA in the next few years and I will always ride it again when i have got time for travel. But when will do a car road trip it definitely becomes a Crown Vic. Stupid is only if for example the car does not start and I do not know why. Then I do not know what to order and I need a competent workshop first. The police model crown vics don't get the sound insulation of the civilian models. Also if you get a chance try a Chevy caprice with the 6.0 v8 or the dodge charger 5.7 hemi. Both of those cars outhandle and out accelerate the crown vic by a lot and they actually get better fuel economy because the engines use newer technology. But I definitely like the crown vic.

Hey Stellan, Thanks for your comment. Yes, the Chargers or Caprices are cool cars. But I have chosen a Ford because we have no Dodge or Chevy workshops in Germany and so nobody knows the technic of the cars. And if, for example, the DOD system on the Dodge fails, I have a big problem. The DOD is said to fail with the cars. Ford workshops we have even though it depends on whether the boss wants to help you because the European Ford models are almost all different than in the US

A Crown victoria is certainly comfortable and definitely more comfortable than many German mid-range cars. If you've ever ridden in a BMW 5 Series or 7 Series, or in a Mercedes E or S class, you'd definitely swap Ford for it. My dad was a police officer in the US while I was growing up so I was fortunate to ride in them a lot (As a passenger, not a criminal lol), he and my brother both bought them from police auctions even after he was out of the police force, they really are great cars, butter smooth up to about 120mph, always felt safe in them too. The law in many US states is the same as in Germany, slow traffic to the right, what is unfortunate though, is that many people feel it necessary to enforce the law themselves, so they will often drive the speed limit in the left lane, I don’t condone excessive speeding, but in some cases, as a collective, we can get away with it, I live in North Carolina, a state with pretty good highways, and it’s entirely possible to drive at over 100mph safely in many places, and I see it happen. I’ve had instances where I’m driving (in the right/middle/middle right lane) at 80-85 mph and I’m still getting passed.

The official (legal) speed limit and the de-facto (go with the flow) speed limit are often two different things. I've seen police "push" cars out of the left lane if they dawdle too much. Hey Joseph, the mic you can see is only for announcment to the outside speaker. The radio won´t work in germany so its dismounted. The sirens works fine. I will publish a video in spring where i ckeck the sirens. The lightbar and the flashers/strobes working 100%. Have a look to my introduction video there are full lights "on" ....stay interested. Great video! While not especially known for speed, the Vic proved to be one of the most reliable and rugged cars of the era, and could with a little maintenance go 300k miles. (Thats American maintenance, where oil changes might be skipped here and there and zip ties and duct tape is used) The cops who had them here beat the snot out of them. The were routinely driven over curbs, steps, across medians, and over every sort of terrain possible. They can be picked up here for $500 or so for a beat up " crack whore" to $3000 for a very well maintained low mileage example, so they are super cheap. They are easy to work on as well. You get a lot of "bang for your buck" with a Crown Vic. Enjoy yours!

Hello MYGAL67......Thanks for the Praise :-) ....yes in the US, the Vics are really cheap and you get a good as you mentioned for 3,000 Bucks. Unfortunately, you pay in Germany between 8,000 and 20,000 dollars depending on the condition of the car. This is because you have to add high import duties and transport. If I had bought the vehicle directly in for $ 3,000 in the US, I would have spent including remodeling of the car on German law about $ 10,000 until the vis is on my driveway. So I bought directly in Germany because I found a good one (no rust no dents) for a fair price....and in full police spec

Yes the wild 80s :-) nowadays you have to rebuild an American vehicle in Germany in that you have to adjust the lighting system. 90% of the necessary conversions concern the lighting system. for example we need a rear fog lamp here. So a cable has to be pulled back and an additional red lamp has to be attached to the bumper. This red lamp may only be switched on when it is foggy and the visibility is less than 50 meters. This lamp is mandatory in Germany. Furthermore, you need taillight housing the yellow turn signals include. You in the US have red turn signals in the back . I think in Canada, the turn signals are also yellow, so there are the yellow housing to buy. this housing must therefore be replaced. Furthermore, no yellow park lamps in the front are allowed , they must be white. Now you need a technical report that both the exhaust gases and the entire test numbers on glass panes, seat belts, etc correspond to the German standard. the report then consists of loose 20 pages of paper and costs several hundred euros.

Another example (of many): Until the 80s also it was not allowed to install these yellow side marking lamps on trucks and trailers, while trucks and trailers in Holland (country in the immediate neighborhood to Germany and witch nearly the same culture), France and other countries drove around like "christmas trees"... ...not to mention American and Australian trucks. It was the same with the 3rd break light in cars too - standard in US cars of all categories since decades - in Germany (of course) it was forbidden... ...and then, many ministers in the Department of Transportation later, "suddenly" all these *safety components* are not longer "unsafe" - no, on the contrary - now all manufacturers of trucks and trailers *must* install side marking lamps *according to law* ... ...and now *all* cars *must* have a 3rd break light...! The same with that "light system thing" and yellow park lamps (the latter *extremely* "dangerous"): OMG - how is it possible that hundred of millions of Americans already had driven cars in this way - *and that over decades* and also *accident-free* ...??? Perhaps they have different eyes, or even they drive *blind* , not knowing how *unsafe* the vehicles they drive in their country (apart from German import vehicles - of course...) ?!? Thank God, Kanadian Crowns were build with yellow turn signals in the rear lights - think about all the accidents would be happen because of these "dangerous" *red* turn signals - no German would ever be allowed to drive such an "unsafe" car in this "outstanding" country !!! P71 Vic's are designed to be good for 125mph. Bigger transmission cooler, tweaks to the driveline, i think the suspension's a bit stiffer than regular vic's but don't quote me on that. The tires are W rating(168mph), assuming they're using the stamp steelie 17 cop tires.

Enjoyed the video. Don't blame you for not pushing the engine to the max. Back in the 1980's a friend of mine bought a highway patrol interceptor at auction. Fast with big engine ran great. The only problem was he could see the fuel gauge move as he drove. Not built for economy.

As an American, who also owns a 2007 Crown Victoria Police Interceptor... I appreciate your opinion, but I don't think you gave it a "fair shake"? I don't know how you aquired yours, but please remember, this car wasn't built to cruise smoothly down the German autobahn at 300 KPh+... it's not a luxury cruiser, it's an American POLICE CAR. it was built to patrol and stalk major American metropolitan CITIES... some of which have almost as big a population than the entire German NATION. It's rated to jump a 6 inch curb at 30 mph, and keep going. It's built to smash and "PIT" suspect vehicles twice It's size. It may not be "fast", acceleration wise, but it's built to maintain high speed pursuits for extended periods of time. All of which it did EXCEEDINGLY well.

I am a chauffeur in the Washington DC area with autocross experience. I use to enjoy “spending time” in the Lincoln Town car which is an “upgraded” crown Vic. Even the town car limousines weren’t safe from my driving enthusiasm. I drove those limos (unoccupied of course) like they were 2250lbs hot hatches. Good times. If you need driving services in the DC area let me know. 0 accidents, O violations, 50,000 miles.

I've maxed out all my state side Panthers driving over the sunshine skyway on 275. It's like a roller coaster. Maximum speed with minimum fuel consumption.

Howdy Frank. I drove Crown Vic pursuit cars in the U.S. southwest. They performed well. But, I have to say, I drove a 1991 Chevy Caprice Classic pursuit car for 2 years. It topped out at 315 kph and was smooth and maneuverable as high end BMW or Mercedes. So, I'm a fan of both.

That search light poking out of the A pillar would be causing a lot of wind noise around the screen and door leading edge. Nice video, simple and lots of information. Cheers.

While here in the US those cars are everywhere, it must be an interesting sight in a German autobahn! I have a Mercury Grand Marquis, that is almost the same car as the civilian version of the Ford Crown Victoria. Extremely comfortable for long trips. I went from Connecticut to Orlando, Florida, which is close to 2000 kilometers and never got tired driving it. And I found that the best cruising speed on it is about 110 to 130 km/h. That's where the sweet spot in fuel efficiency seems to be on these cars. I got up to 8.5 liters/100 km (27.5 mpg). That's not bad for a heavy car like this.

I drove one of those from around 1993 until my department switched over to the Ford Taurus police interceptor in 2013. It was by far the roomiest police car i ever drove. Not that fast, but sturdy (body on frame), and a great movable office. Still the best police car i ever got to drive was a 1978 Chevy nova. It was supposedly built on a Chevy Camaro Z-28 frame equipped with a small block 350 engine, and handled like a dream. Plus it was very quick.

Yes, that could be due to the German Highways/autobahn. The quality of the roads here on the highways/Autobahn is usually very good. The car drives very quietly. I remember from my last USA holiday that the American highways are usually a bit rougher than the German ones

Conbination here. In BC blue signs are points of general information (for example saying theres a gas station ahead or a turnoff/rest area soon or what food and accomodation the next towns have) and green signs are for direction or distance to towns

Same rules about the left lane in the USA (rules of the road can vary by state but I believe all states have this rule) - you may ONLY drive in the left-most lane on a highway when passing, and must move back to the right when you have overtaken. But most people in the USA think their Prius going 60mph in the left lane is fine, and some REFUSE to move over no matter what. Also, in highways with 3+ lanes, trucks and buses may not drive in the left lane at all (HOV lanes, where applicable, not counting as the "leftmost" lane in this case; they have their own regulations, and usually permit buses and motorcycles). Also, the color of US signs varies depending on the type of sign: Green signs are used for exits and road information, white for regulatory (speed limits, "Trucks, Buses, Trailers Left Lane Prohibited", "Keep Right Except to Pass", etc.), blue for travel (rest stops, gas/food, points of interest), yellow for cautionary (pedestrian crossing, "Right Lane Exit Only"), orange for construction or temporary, and so on.
