Carson, known as the 6th Gen Farmer, is a dedicated agricultural professional embarking on an independent farming journey after branching out from his family’s multi-generational operation. While not a "new" or "beginning" farmer in the traditional sense, Carson is deeply committed to sharing the challenges and triumphs of building a farm from the ground up. The best way I've found for taking out barbed wire fencing is just to wrap a chain around each post individually and hook it up to a loader and lift straight up with the wire still on it and then once the whole fence is out start rolling the posts and wire together like you would chicken wiring, thats what ive always done abd its always worked pretty well!

I vote for building your own monitoring system! The sensors and input modules aren't that expensive, and you can run it with a Raspberry Pi and Node-RED. You could even hook it into the scale! That could be several videos worth of content. 😁

Thanks for this one Carson! I was hoping you would show us your new farm! (and whatever buildings/bin site you will be using) It's a smart strategy to use unused local assets, esp. even if family. Any leg-up you can get is wise to use, since you come by it honestly. You also helped to build your Dad and brother's place. One hand washes the other. I'm really happy to see you succeeding, and I hope things go your way as often as needed! You're smart, and hard-working, and you will keep helping your family too, I have no doubt. Much obliged you share so much with us!

Hi Carson! Have always loved your videos and sure hope things go well for you. It's so exciting to see you going off on your own. Hey, talk to Cole at Sonne Farms, Cole and his dad take down and have replace a lot of barbed wire fence. Cole made a barbed wire winder for his skid-steer, and it looks like it works great! Maybe you could get him to come and help you! Stay safe and healthy out there!

Enjoyed learning about your family. My family's roots in farming have nearly come to a close after immigrating from Alsace in the 1800s, and I consider myself a first generation non-farmer. I didn't have the exposure that my mother had in the 30s and 40s. I think she was all too happy to find herself a new life outside of farming (farm got split up between her brothers), but she had her cherished memories, like when she rode her horse to school a few times.

Actually going to 12:55 if you have a hot dry year for corn being bordered by soybeans can also hurt yield. Edges of corn field, particularly south and west sides, get dried out by hot winds causing reduced yield if you don't have enough moisture + short crop(soybeans) or a road.

Don’t shoot yourself in the foot by not taking what your dad is willing to help you with. Remember they probably owe the bank less than you do. When you have your own children you will understand your dad more. Baby steps is not always a bad thing.Food for through, an arrangement like Eric with Larson Farms has with the Larsons might work well for you at this point in your endeavor. I truly want you to be successful in making your dream come true.

I agree with the guy who said remove the wires from fence, roll all the wires together by hand, then use skid loader to load the wire rolls on trailer and pluck the posts from the ground. Set the posts directly on a trailer and you never have to touch them in the field. My brother and I have done a lot of fence this way

I've removed a lot of miles of barbed wire fence. I remove wires from post and lay them flat (assuming they're mostly intact). I roll the wire by hand. Make a big initial loop of wire that's about waist high at top. Then just start rolling it up. You can get a roller but need to find one that spool splits to get wire off. For only half mile be easy to remove by hand unless wire is really tangled in weeds. If it is in weeds you maybe can pull it into field with UTV then roll.

I have done a few fences. Pull the posts with the wire attached and lay on the ground. I scooped it up with a loader tractor with forks, then cut the wire when the forks were full. But for you, I would try to use your dads excavator to scoop it up.

About the lone row of trees: I know it not fun to farm around, but isn’t it a nice habitat for all kinds of animals pollinating your fields? Maybe set up some bees there? Furthermore, trees are always good against erosion.

I’m not going to disagree with you. I’m utilizing resources from my family because they’re sitting there not being used. I’m pretty good friends with Grant and I would consider him a true startup farmer. However, Grant even fully admits that at his scale, farming is not making much money. In his last video, he explained that he was able to purchase his new tractor from outside assets. I’m in a very similar boat. The farm at the scale that I’m at will not be making money. So I need to utilize every resources I have in order to survive. Because at this point in my career, it’s about survival.

@ gregjames, exactly the point. Starting a farming operation today is near impossible without previous wealth. The real issue is that crop $ production may offer survival but will not offset debt. Current conditions which could change in a new administration.
