Good that there's no rumble motors because this runs off your phone battery so any led or motor is going to drain your phone even faster.

Great review. I have the X2 pro from gamesir. Great controller although it just broke sooooo....excellent reason for an upgrade and I'm looking at this. Also, I totally agree that they need to add rumble effect to their controllers ... I would definitely pay the extra cost

This controller is amazing! I ended up taking a knife to the thin rubber grip on the usb-c connector side, and now it works great even with a case on it.

I love my GameSir X2 Pro. It's the reason why I have such a hard time considering the cheaper retro handhelds. At the end of the day I just want something with enough performance to run most of the stuff I care about, a pretty + big screen to stare at while doing it, and some nice buttons/sticks/analog triggers. An old flagship phone from 2018 with a Snapdragon 845 will run circles around most new handhelds while flaunting a really nice OLED or, like the LG G7 and Xperia XZ2, peak LCD technology; and a good used one will be dirt cheap from the usual sources. Or repurpose the one you already own that's sitting in the junk drawer. Or use the one you daily. Either way; building your own handheld using a phone and a telescopic controller is a great option if you're like me and you've got Ferrero Rocher tastes on a Great Value budget. I don't know why I'm getting ready to type what I'm getting ready to type. Selfishly, I shouldn't, because it'll hurt my chances of winning... LoL, as if anyone is going to read this far. Anyways; GameSir is giving away five G8 Galileos on their Twitter, on Christmas Day. I entered because as much as I love my X2 Pro I'm sure I'd love this unit just a little bit more. To enter you just have to comment under the right post/tweet and they're going to use a random comment picker to pick the five winners. Good luck to everyone who did make it this far. One thing to note about GameSir USB controllers, and this is very important, is that they aren't compatible with every USB-C phone. Or at least my X2 Pro isn't. It requires the phone to have USB Power Delivery 2.0 support in order to pair. If you've got a flagship then you're probably going to be fine. However; a lot of midrange and lower end phones quietly omit PD 2.0 support to save a few pennies. I've got only phone that supports my X2 Pro. I've got a couple of big battery prepaid phones that can run Dreamcast and PS1 like a champ (an older Moto G7 Power and a new Galaxy A-something) and would be perfect to use with my X2 Pro; but, no dice. They both have working OTG and a USB 2.0 port; but, neither has USB PD 2.0. I don't know if the G8 Galileo has the same shortcoming. All I can recommend is that if you don't have a flagship Android or iPhone then do some research before you buy a GameSir USB telescopic controller. With all the options available for telescopic controllers this seems like the best choice but do any other brands have any advantage with exclusivity in their apps like being able to play certain games or use third party apps like GeForce Now? Like would there be anything I wouldn't be able to do with this that I could with the Kishi for example?

When you see Gamesir at CES can you ask them these questions? 1. Backbone is the only telescopic Android controller recognized by COD Mobile (that is, without a keymapper). They even have their own in game setting. Have they reached out to Actvision/Tencent to work out something similar for their controllers? 2. Now that iPhones have switched over to USB-C, will some of their older controllers be updated to support them? Android telescopic controllers generally don’t work out of the box for the USB-C iPhones. I’m specifically curious about the X2 Pro since it was never released for iPhone.

Surface Duo 2 user here. I love the idea of using these controllers for DS/3DS emulation. Unfortunately the issue is the one you outlined with the USB-C port being on the right side instead of the left. The Gamesir X2 is the only wired option that comes close to a proper DS style configuration for foldables, but it's showing its age and doesn't have the ergonomics I would like on the G8. I wish controller makers would acknowledge this growing use case and swap the port back over to the left, as I see no real benefit to moving ports to the right for non-foldable phones. I dunno, it just seems like a continually missed opportunity to me for a more robust use case/audience. Thankfully, I'm no stranger to modding, and someone has already done a mod on the Surface Duo subreddit for the G8 that adapts it for better fitment. I might try it.

Mine came with a wonky left trigger (the sensor would read from 6-25% at rest) but I just exchanged it through amazon because the rest of it is so good. Really like this thing.

Ah you can calibrate that in the app by the way, mine was doing the same thing at first. This is something good to note, because I assumed it was just me. After the app updated to latest it defaulted to correct deadzones too.

This is sweet! Imagine a handheld be so customizable! Makes me think if there are smartphones without the phone part but has different aspect ratios, say a 3:2 snapdragon 845, 865, or a 4:3 or a 16x9 with a mediatek whatever lol. Great review, Stubbs! Kinda sucks without the rumble but.. there's "rumble" on the phone lol.

I have it, and it's almost offensive how good it is. I wish game sir made joycon replacements using the tech/design cues from this controller, because damn. Forget about retro handhelds, this is better than just about every handheld controller for the Switch. And I've tried a lot of those. Also Spigen makes some thin and good phone cases, I had no issue leaving the case on.

You're lying if you say these are better than every joycons for switch. If you tried just about every joycon then you would know they are way better joycons than this out there. First off, the original split pad pro and kinvoca joycons are way better than the gilallo8.

@@redcrimson1028 I've played with the original split pad pro, its dpad is allright, I never quite got used to their shape. The split pad compact is far better. But the gamesir just feels nicer overall. I don't know if it's better than ALL joycons, but I am not "LYING" when I said I've tried a lot of those. Of course I didn't try all of them, this is the first time i hear of kinvoca, so maybe they are better. I am also really hoping the new Mobapad ones are better, cause I am getting them soon. BTW, Hori lose points because my left split pad got a huge crack after I dropped it ONCE. I don't remember ever seeing a more fragile controller .

It sounds like the ABXY buttons aren't very clicky with the rubber membrane. How are they compared to other controllers? I have a Backbone and I find it a bit too clicky.

Also, this works for iOS pretty well. Using on my iPhone 15 pro, only gripe I have is it has to be used in PlayStation mode, which messes with default Steam!ink button mappings. It’d be fine if the button inscription was square, x, circle and triangle, but it’s ABXY. Why would this be the default? Funny design decision.

I'll be honest with you. Keep them both, especially if you like retro emulation or fighting games. The g7 pro has a superior d pad for anything like nes, snes, gba, any fighting game, ECT. However for any modern usage like remote play or gamepass, fortnite, minecraft, or even later systems (psp,gc,ECT) the g8 is the clear winner based on comfort. In short, d pad reliant games go with the g7. For everything else use the g8. Just remember it's d pad is not as good as the g7's. Return the backbone if you have one.

@@matts1978 dude thank for your response, i actually find the g8 pro used more power compared to x2 pro by huge amount 50 mah vs 140 mah, because the g8 put DAC in it, for the design and comfort, i feel like g8 its more comfortable because its more ergonomic & natural for hands. For a design for me both are tied, but the x2 pro got fatigue faster, im playing like 1 hours and i need to put down the gamepad and need to rolled my fingers. G8 also support yuzu emu by default unlike x2 pro, and also the g8 support

Mainly ergonomics meaning it's more comfortable, better joysticks, analogue triggers, and a headphone jack (if you care about that)

if you are doing a review on the gamepad, please do a more detailed review of the sticks, because at 13:26 you twisted them too fast, and for some reason no one puts emphasis on this, because the presence of dead zones and smooth operation of the sticks is very important during gaming, for good aiming and more precise positioning of the character. There are even geeks who solder them for more precise sensitivity! And this is a very important point! I would really like to see a comparison of stick sensitivity on different devices and different models! I would say that this is exactly the factor that affects the purchase of a new model, not an old one. If it were possible to compare them, it would be easier to make a decision not only about buying a gamepad from some company, but also to choose a specific model.

People on Reddit report that a phone that usually drains 5% per night drains about 30% with the controller attached. Which is a bummer, as it adds an extra step to what you were planning.

Just wanted to come back to report: I have had a phone in the controller for 3 days now, and it hasn't eaten more battery than normal. But also, it is without any firmware updates, because the app wants so many permissions, including exact location, that I'm not gonna install it. I don't know if that would change with an update.

This controller needs expandable storage; add a micro SD card or M.2 NVMe slot. Expandable power using optional battery packs would also be nice to have.

Hall sticks, better buttons and triggers, ergonomics, really everything to me beats the X2 Pro, but that is a personal preference, if you're happy with the X2 Pro and aren't wanting any changes, then you already have the perfect controller for you.

Works fine on pixel 8 pro. The expansion gap happens on the left side so the camera bar clears it. I use it with a spigen thin fit case. Everything works fine.

​​@@zakuworks000Gaming phones generate heat. Which is why it's a no brainer to add cooler. Gamesir X3 did it. Gaming phones removed expandable storage. 128 gb and 256 gbs sometimes are not enough anymore. Specially hoyo games that can reach 35 gbs and switch roms reaching 20 plus gbs. I've talked with people having the same issues. So no. You're just too ignorant on this subject.

The right analog stick looks painful to use by non-asian adult hands. The Nacon MGX Pro is already a bit smaller than the Xbox Elite 2 controller, and this is an even bigger compromise. It's something between the size of a normal controller and the backbone style cramptroller. The new PlayStation Portal controller setup shows that the larger style is the way to go for serious gaming. I'll buy one of these if they come out with a larger one or at least attachments that can make the shell/hand grip area larger.
