If Brian was around he coulda told them running an empty microwave is dangerous because if there's nothing inside it to absorb the microwaves energy, it builds up way more rapidly and can kill the unit/cause damage/an actual fire etc should run it with a small glass of water in it at the very least.

Linus: *complains about mechanical sprinkler controls, and intercoms in his 1990's house.* Me sitting in my 1908 house having just removed concealed knob and tube electrical connections and uphill plumbing from the same bathroom: "That's so unfortunate, I can't believe you were left with that mess". It's not a competition, and I can identify with any remodeling struggles.

Any plans on doing a side-by-side comparison of Shelly vs a couple of the most popular smart light switches on the market? I'm currently at that impasse and torn between the manual (slightly unknown to me) work of wiring up a Shelly to each switch vs investing in something out-of-the-box solutions like Lutron. As a drywaller - I second this. Also change the main furnace/air handler filter after the construction is done (or at least check if it needs it), and if there's any forced air outlets at floor level, it wouldn't hurt to cover them with ordinary window insect screen material to keep big chunks out. As an electrician, you can never go wrong with hardwired Ethernet throughout the house with WAPs (WIRELESS ACCESS POINT) scattered in alternate hallways etc. With a programmed Cbus system. If you have all your light switches, PowerPoint's and lights running wireless, it just creates the problem of drop-outs and unpairing issues. Linus being a tech lord should know this! You can have all the tech gear you want on wireless systems but when it comes down to the essentials In your house that you rely on every day for living, keep it wired! :) love from Straya.

Or have a second breaker box just for the garage. A guy I used to work with did that for his Tesla so he could charge his car without affecting the house electric. He then is able to monitor his solar supplemented power used to charge the car and whatever isnt used back feeds into the line. The power company is literally paying him for the electricity he uses to get to work.....and he works for the electric company 🤓

@@Watercooledguy Agreed with the second breaker box. Its honestly just more ideal and safer to run it separate for the Garage. I think linus could do that and would be better off in the long run. In Canada, the Tax Act does not allow the write off of business expense if the primary purpose of such expense wasn't to earn business income. Yes, making this video has earned him income but he has stated in videos multiple times that this is his new home and he plans to live in it. Therefore, the primary purpose is personal use while the secondary purpose is business income. With respect to certain areas/rooms being intended as an office, those expenses could be written off. I do not know how US business expense works but in Canada, the primary intention of use is a deciding factor on whether it applies or not. [Disclaimer: Not Legal Advice]

@ThatOneStopSign I wouldn't say they get a bonus, but there is absolutely nothing wrong with using your business and employees (in this case, Linus's channels are 100% small business) to work on your home and create content. It give your employees work to do, and it creates content to keep the business going. All while being able to use a lot of this as a business write off because, hey, its both for home and work use. Linus also has been showing a lot more of his employees doing their own hosting of projects for various things and I bet you when they put in the time and effort to produce great content, they do get compensated for that (Possibly) extra effort.

@@darktetor Advice would be to keep it as simple as you can if you are building from the ground up. I'm liking switches more and more with zwave. I find wifi bulbs are not as stable. I also would suggest if you are using a raspberry Pi 4 run it on a SSD instead of SD card. Do research on devices before you buy make sure they integrate into HA and play nice. For example Nest thermostat and cams are a giant PIA to integrate and requires quite a few hoops to jump through. You will need to do a bit of coding in the HA yaml files to make some things work . Don't get intimidated there is lots of videos and tutorials and the HA community has been a friendly and pleasant experience. The second you make a cheap motion detector turn on your lifx stuff, those are the moments that make it all worth it.

Great Episode! I came to the same conclusion months ago when starting a building automation project. One thing about ZWave, because of the standardized structure for commands, any device not listed can be easily added by simply adding parameters. I did this with openHAB. I introduced a commercial Yale Lock with an AYR202 ZWave module. openHAB detected the device, I submitted the resulting XML to the Open Smart Home site and was invited to add in the ZWave parameters which form the basis of the device channels. I can now program codes and simply unlock the door with a tap. ZWave is the way to go for most building automation.

The other issue with zigbee is range and mesh size. It can be tricky to diagnose or figure out problems because they’re often just a battery and a sensor, and little else. 30+ devices can be a challenge because it broadcasts in a 10-30ft radio bubble, which may require having a few odd wired/plug-in Zigbee light bulbs, wall switches or repeaters to prevent signal/battery loss. You may need a few wall plug repeaters from ikea to improve the speed if you add an outdoor sensor or lots of battery sensors and they start to not respond quickly, or at all in their new location. That said, you can separate a hub for different device types on different channels if you have lights and devices that take too long to respond. Eg IKEA tradfri separate to Philips hue lights and paired with the aeotec sensors etc. pairing is usually the easy part, troubleshooting is tricky.

Guys you missed an amazing really smart thing you could use that stand alone 6way sensor if it has vibration detection.. Earthquake detection.. now I have no idea how "sensitive" the device is and you'd want to set the threshold for such a trigger very very high otherwise a big semi getting lost and coming down the street could set it off. Still though if tuned "right" you could have it cut power to the whole or key sections of the house (block out spots for emergency lighting and network so you theoretically could still access net for info). Setting it up to turn off things like gas (if possible) or high volt/amp devices, the safety that would add to the house during "a big one" would be major because lots of "after the quake" damage comes from fires, live gas, live high volt/amp electrical and so on.

You'd be surprised. Home Assistant can be local only if you want, and Z-Wave devices are pretty mature at this point. There's definitely a lot of internet connected garbage 'smart home' stuff out there, but there's also a ton of great stuff. Just takes time to figure out what you really want to do, and the right products for it.

Every switch in my house is a GE zwave switch I think over 30 to be exact. Ive been running homeassistant with the aoetec zwave hub for like 3 years now and love it! Plus you can easily add Siri and Ok Google to voice command/control everything.
