As an electrician, you can never go wrong with hardwired Ethernet throughout the house with WAPs (WIRELESS ACCESS POINT) scattered in alternate hallways etc. With a programmed Cbus system. If you have all your light switches, PowerPoint's and lights running wireless, it just creates the problem of drop-outs and unpairing issues. Linus being a tech lord should know this! You can have all the tech gear you want on wireless systems but when it comes down to the essentials In your house that you rely on every day for living, keep it wired! :) love from Straya.

The other issue with zigbee is range and mesh size. It can be tricky to diagnose or figure out problems because they’re often just a battery and a sensor, and little else. 30+ devices can be a challenge because it broadcasts in a 10-30ft radio bubble, which may require having a few odd wired/plug-in Zigbee light bulbs, wall switches or repeaters to prevent signal/battery loss. You may need a few wall plug repeaters from ikea to improve the speed if you add an outdoor sensor or lots of battery sensors and they start to not respond quickly, or at all in their new location. That said, you can separate a hub for different device types on different channels if you have lights and devices that take too long to respond. Eg IKEA tradfri separate to Philips hue lights and paired with the aeotec sensors etc. pairing is usually the easy part, troubleshooting is tricky.

From a book (fellow Canadian): Making something beautiful is difficult, but it is amazingly worthwhile. If you learn to make something in your life truly beautiful-even one thing-then you have established a relationship with beauty. From there you can begin to expand that relationship out into other elements of your life and the world. That is an invitation to the divine. That is the reconnection with the immortality of childhood, and the true beauty and majesty of the Being you can no longer see. You must be daring to try that.

Great Episode! I came to the same conclusion months ago when starting a building automation project. One thing about ZWave, because of the standardized structure for commands, any device not listed can be easily added by simply adding parameters. I did this with openHAB. I introduced a commercial Yale Lock with an AYR202 ZWave module. openHAB detected the device, I submitted the resulting XML to the Open Smart Home site and was invited to add in the ZWave parameters which form the basis of the device channels. I can now program codes and simply unlock the door with a tap. ZWave is the way to go for most building automation.

When I worked in Kansas City I came to really resent the dumb thermostats. It is cold in the morning so I would need heat. It is hot in the afternoon so I would need cooling. Unfortunately, the 1950s vintage thermostat had to be switched manually from heating to cooling. Since I was at work, that did not happen. A fix is obvious, but I do not see it even today. Switching from a bang-bang controller to a proportional controller would also be a great improvement.

When it comes to motion sensors you really want ones with microphones. Imagine doing an LOTR sesh and boom you’re thrown into darkness mid siege of Gondor because no ones moved.
@Catsrules13 жыл бұрын
With the power of home assistant you can add a lot more smarts to it then just motion, for example, in my computer room I have my lights also trigger off my computer's idle time. I was having issues with my office lights turn off with me sitting at the computer. (Apparently I don't move that much) But now every time my mouse moves or the motion sensor sense motion the 20 minutes timer resets. You could do the same thing for like a TV room. If your media device is playing a something home assistant can assume the room is occupied.

Why would you want a microphone? Home Assistant knows that my TV is on and that Plex is running and what is playing, so as long as something is playing it doesn't turn the light's on. When I pause, it turns them on to a medium setting and when I stop it goes to full.

I love homeassistant so much. It's been my entry into basic coding and it's a lot of fun for the home. Basically good brain exercise with all the problem solving you have to do yourself. The added benefit is having cool stuff in your house/room. Having lights turn on/off based on your location is the best, and having them track the position of the sun and adjust brightness and color temperature accordingly is fucking amazing. Have an older speaker amplifier that you have to manually turn on? Fret no more, just plug it into a smart plug and set the plug to turn on when your computer turns on and vice versa. The possibilities are literally endless.

It is not true that ZigBee devices require no certification. In order to make a commercial product, your company must first be part of the ZigBee Alliance and second, each device also gets certificated. But even though there is a ZigBee standard that makes sure devices from different vendors can work together, vendors are not required to use it and can extend it on use their own higher level communications protocol. This basically means that ZigBee bulbs from manufacturer A might not work with manufacturer’s B Hub if one of them didn’t follow the standard strictly.
