@tom-qx6dq
@tom-qx6dq 3 жыл бұрын
@@TremereTT EZ answer is no. These devices are certainly not designed for 1 user, maybe for 0 users, but in that house something will be always connected. It is impossible to downclock that kind of HW too much. 3x the power usage 24/7 is conservative estimate, this times 5 compared to basic ubiquity routers which are much more than capable.. Its true that it will be pretty small % of power usage of that home, but it adds up.

"CONCRETE between each of the floors [...] which tends to seriously reduce your signal strength" I live in European country and most buildings here have atleast 20+ cm (7.9+ inches) of solid, steel reinforced, concrete between floors which is absolute pain for WiFi. Also, it doesn't help that every indoor-wall is also build with thick aerated concrete blocks. I'm glad that i could cheaply obtain some (fairly new) Cisco Aironet AP's from my workplace after they upgraded to WiFi-6, otherwise i would have had to spend way too much money for my WiFi setup.

as someone who uses/installs Ruckus gear, I can tell you, their stuff has proper RF shielding and will automatically adjust broadcast power to best optimize range and its antenna arrays means that it only needs to beam signals towards the device as it needs to, so if anything a Ruckus setup will generate less interference than an equivalent say Ubiquiti access point, which basically has no shielding. Look at the inside of a Ruckus and look at the inside of a Ubiquiti and I think you'll understand a little better. You don't need masses of power if you're clever about how you use it.

I appreciate the secondary test at the end of the video where you show the performance of a single WAP. We install these all the time and would have done a project like this with 2-3 units depending on the client wanting outdoor coverage or not. While I love the "Tesla Model S Plat" approach, clients should also know they don't need to spend $10K to have great WIFI in their homes. Thanks for an awesome video. We will definitely share.

For anyone confused by the speed being better while standing still: the way the signal is decoded is by the AP treating the physical degradation/attenuation/reflection/etc. as a matrix solution to an equation (it's called the 'channel' factor, a literal physical description of what the signal's path is doing), it can then use that to properly read the incoming signal (basically clean signal * channel effects = received signal, received signal / channel effects = clean signal). So standing still means the channel effects don't change, so there's no need to recompute a solution due to signal loss.

Why spend 600+ for a solid wifi router when depending on your location you may need additional access points anyways when for Likely less than 300 for a couple cheap switches and if you're willing to terminate your own wires you can do an entire house and get the maximum throughput of your connection.

As a technician in the technology field, you guys should know that when you're toning out shielded cat cable, it's very difficult to get an inductive tone with the wand on the sheathing of the cable. You would be better off testing the ends of the cable, or if you had a different toner, you could connect the positive to the cat cable, and the negative to earth ground. That makes them SCREAM😂. Super helpful

@testthisfordecficiencies

Yes and no, the induction should be just fine if the source is powerful enough. Your standard toner is only 9V and doesn't give much amplification. Shielded cable can really complicate things, so the shield should be clipped in this case which would provide great sheath detection of tone. We do it all the time.

We moved house and our ISP sent us a new router (our ISP uses Fritz Boxes). Thing is, they never ask to send the old one back and it has a mesh-network setting! So we placed the new one near the front door as master, and took the old one and placed it near the backdoor. (LAN connected) Our house is not very big, but the whole house from front yard to back yard (+shed) has perfect WiFi now! FOR FREE :D (You might be able to buy a used one for like $5,- or $10,-!) It can mesh using a cable or by extending WiFi. :D

Linus will never install an "end game" wireless access point. There will always be newer, better overkill options. And it's Linus, so we would expect constant upgrades. Interesting stuff on this series. We are about to do a complete remodel on our home, and I'm going to smartify everything I can. No holding back. I plan to copy a lot of what Linus is doing. Especially with the "smart home" upgrades, including the actuated dampers using sensors. Definitely doing that.
