My hubby wants something new everyday. Me and my son eat leftovers all the time. It was hot here today-70 degrees. All my veggies froze--20 degrees last week here in Texas, so today I ripped out all the tomatoes, broccoli, cauliflower and old lettuce plants. Tomorrow I have to trim back about 2 ft of every limb on my orange trees and hope they still are living. Thanks for sharing. Have a Blessed Day.

So as I was watching Micah fill up the chicken waterer, I was thinking to myself, "Gee, mine is just like that, but the water comes out the bottom until I put the lid back on it". Then Mike talked about unscrewing the cap. Boy, did I feel dumb. I also didn't realize that the bump sticking out on the top was for storing the cap. I hope I didn't throw the caps away. Live and learn. 😏 Yes, I love leftovers!! It's nice to have yummy food to just heat up sometimes without having to think up a mealtime menu. The kids are getting so big and knowledgeable. Pretty soon THEY will be running the farm! God Bless! Carmen

I love it that you show your chicken waterers are mud-spattered just like everyone's are in spring, and that you have the same sort of level of "working chaos" that most people do. In my experience, most people don't have super manicured, picture perfect everything unless they have a fleet of interns or extra workers to get everything looking that way. Family or individual operations have less time to worry about getting everything to that "company" level, the same as we don't keep our houses spiffed up and ready for Grandma to visit all the time. Functional, everyday neat is what most people can manage. Your place looks comfy and functional and beautiful in a realistic way. I think it can be really discouraging for people starting out with homesteading when they see super spiffed up operations that take years and years and lots of extra labor to achieve. Same as it can be discouraging to show only successful projects, and not to show the process of getting there, as you do here, where you modify the chicken tractor based on trying it and seeing how to improve it. Homestead systems don't just spring into fully-formed perfection the first time around, quite often. It's a process, and it's really valuable for people when you can show that process, not just the end result of all those steps in between.

I thought chickens needed a good 2 ft.² in a chicken tractor. Someone else mentioned adding perches. I agree. They need at least 10 inches per chicken on the perch and I think 18 inches between perches. Love leftovers! I intentionally cook extra to have more later and save time.

Mike, One thing you should add to the chickens area is the ash from your wood burning stove and from the wood burning piles from when you cut down trees on your property. One thing you should grow in your garden for the chickens 🐔 is to home grown "FENNEL", they love the feathery fronds from the top, but you'll have to give the bulb at the bottom a rough chop. They will love this as an occasional special treat for them. One bulb with top should be enough for 7 to 8 chickens. That should help you in how many you should grow verses the number of chickens you have at your Homestead. You can always dehydrate them if you get a bumper crop of them too.
