Hey Jason, just wanted to say thanks. Between you and Robert you lit a fire under me. Picked up my new recurve on Thursday and spent the last 2 days out at the range. Forgot how much fun it was. My only regret is that I waited 46 years to get back into it. Thanks again!

I was a Union Bricklayer 17 years refractory. When we wrecked a furnace rebuild, I kept the thermo couple ceramic tubes that held them in the side of furnaces. They measured heat. They are 12 and 18inch. Look and see if you can find them from a refractory supply company. I drilled hole in one end of a porch railing rib and glue them in it. Store them in pvc pipe.

@@SamkoTradBowfor a longer ceramic like item, use a diamond Victonox sharpener, the long type. I got an older one from work in a middle school kitchen that failed early on the handle. The long size is 12 inches excluding handle and part held into the handle. I use this for the spot a ceramic would be used.

Sharpening is one of those things that really gets nuked, and so many people spend so much money of various complex contraptions to get the job done. And I must confess, I too have not been using my leather strop as much either. Instead, I've been honing my edges on my aluminum arrow shafts, just for a quick touch-up, for many years now. Great pro-tips as always. Thanks, Jason!

yep aluminum, hard woods, the edge of your truck windows, etc all make great strops.

I think wood itself can be a pretty good strop. I accidentally made a huge leather strop on a board and it works better than expected. I like a large stone with coarse grit on one side and light grit on the other. I lay the broadhead on a flat surface and sharpen the broadhead with the stone, instead of rubbing the broadhead on the stone. Much easier to maintain the angle with the stone instead of using the broadhead to maintain the angle for me. Important to replace files often. They degrade quickly and lose their ability to grind effectively. I favor carbon steel over stainless to manually sharpen. If you have electric tools, stainless tougher and holds edge much longer. Been too hot to hunt here in KY. Humid, bugs are bad. Deer are covered in ticks too. Waiting for cooler weather to make hunting more enjoyable. Thanks for sharing sharpening tips.

My buddy joe sharpens the same way you do and finds it easier for him. Doesnt matter how you do it as long as you do it consistently and sounds like you have your method dialed in well. Our season opens saturday. its will be hot and rainy.

@SamkoTradBow

same exact way I do the main bevel. only I keep the angle as low as possible on the bakc side. But I form a bur, flip it form a bur again then fine tune and strop.

You could get some denim material instead of cutting up jeans, no seams. Probably staple it to your board there. I'd stretch it tight and staple the sides, should give you a nice smooth surface. I bet Walmart has the material in their sewing dept.

Do you ignore the tanto tip portion on those Razors? I got some, but the tip is such a small angle that it's awkward to sharpen precisely. Also, do you end up slightly grinding the ferrules where they widen? I seem to eat in to the ferrule portion every time I try to match the bevel angle.
@SamkoTradBow
@SamkoTradBow Жыл бұрын
I do not sharpen the tanto. It's good enough and I want the strength. I don't touch the ferrule when sharpening but it sure is close

1.Sanding belts are long and a GREAT idea, vs. sheets of sandpaper. Thank you. 2.Don't bother with ceramic rods. Use 1,000-grit belts. Presently, I use 100-; 400-; 1,000-; and 2,000-grit sandpaper. Then, 3.I strop on long pieces of dusty/gritty cardboard.

Yep love the simplicity and effectiveness of card board. always uses leather and cardboard, sometimes on and sometimes the other. but always felt i was "supposed to" use leather for best results even though I knew better. Wont use leather again. waste of time and money when there is so much free LONG pieces of card board that work just as well.
