Awesome guitar! More and more I'm thinking that these so-called "entry level" guitars make great modding platforms and provide a very viable alternative to bigger name brands.

From Leo: John Robson, at least partially because of your video, I just purchased one of these. It responded very well to a quick set up. It did have a problem with the pickup mounting screws, where they missed the bottom hole on the pickup so the screws were installed at an angle, pulling the pickup out of alignment. It was a quick fix with nothing but a Phillips screwdriver, but I cannot believe Thomann shipped it like that. The guitar Tunes easily, holds tune and plays fine. I love the tones from those pickups. When it is a time for a string change, I will remove the tuners and dribble a minuscule amount of Teflon enriched lubricant down into the tuner. I have done that before and it makes an inexpensive tuner feel like one that is far more dear. Thank you for your work.

Hi from one John to another. Just bought the Harley Benton TE-90 - after watching your video review and a couple of others. Very pleased. I can't believe it was in tune out of the box. Looks fantastic, plays well and sounds good too. I can live with the reverse headstock. And all for 166.00. Superb. Love your honest reviews John. Keep up the good work. 😊👍

Nicely done John. I have the same one and also encountered some troubles, a crookedly fixed bridge being the baddest one of them. Luckily, I could fix all of it without replacing parts. My guitar had no shielding whatsoever, so I shielded and grounded the pickup switch cavity and the control cavity with copper tape. And I did replace the tiny little pots. All in all a great sounding guitar. Cheers.

I'm really impressed with what you and a few other reviewers say about this guitar. Those pickups have a sound that is music to my ears lol. I've been wanting to buy a tele for awhile now and have become intrigued by some of the Harley Benton offerings. I had nearly settled on the TE 62, then saw the new TE KR 53 (neck humbucker, Keef tribute), then saw your videos on the TE 90. Money is an issue and I can only afford to buy one. Also, I'm not mechanically inclined, and don't want something that needs much more work than changing the strings lol. I'm stuck in indecision land right now but will surely figure it out eventually. I really appreciate your informative reviews and your playing! Please keep them coming but for goodness sake, don't give me any more options to consider right now! Thank you much!

Hi JR, yes I also suffer the fate of changing guitars. But that's what the Harley Bentons can do for you. If I sold my 4 guitars I would probably just about have enough money for one Mexican Fender Strat. Having Harley Bentons mean I can change to Strat type to LP type or Tele, when I feel like it. These guitars are that good now that getting a really bad one, one that you just can't fettle, is in my experience, rare. Thanks again for an enlightening video. I am going to try hard not to buy a HB Cabronita....but I can sense my resistance is already weakening

The problem with the bridge may have been slack tolerances on the width of the string saddles. It would only need each saddle to be slightly wider than spec to turn 52.5mm into 54mm. Another possibility is inconsistent thickness of the chrome plating. The better bridge is probably just more accurately manufactured - and that's one of the things you pay for. Slightly misplaced bridges seem to be one of those things with cheap guitars, like the poor tuners and bargain-basement pots and switches.

As if i hadn't guessed that already John, with the amount of times I've seen you use it on your tutorial videos since you got it... Though those reverse or upside down tunning pegs is not to my liking but I can see why you like it & as long as you do, thats what counts... Thinking of adding a tortoise shell pick guard! Oops I see you have added a quarter part cover, I knew you'd sneak it on... I always liked the look of those pick ups & with all the changes you've made, I hope you have many years of fun playing it... Ps Just one thing though! I thought you didn't like that type of bridge aesthetically as they looked to blocky & you preferred the look of the ones from the original Fender guitars, or am I getting mixed up in my old age... All In All still a great budget guitar even when you factor in all the changes you've made... Enjoy Bud...

Cheers Paul, It's the Fender twin point trem I'm not fond of, with the rather "agricultural" looking saddles. These do look a bit like that, I guess... But context counts for a lot. On a strat, my eye expects to see the old school 6 screw bridge with bent steel saddles & the modern design looks somehow out of place on that guitar.

The Blytonian I love the guitar as it is a heavy beast.. but for some reason the Roswell pickups sounded muddy when switching to single coil. As they are I love the sound of the guitar but not all the time tho and sometimes sounds a bit sharp. With the Iron Gear Rolling Mill overwound and the wining kit I think I paid just under £70 all in... still making the guitar sub £260 all together but sounding like a guitar that would cost 4x that easy. The new nut is absolutely perfect in every way but my guitar had very very uneven frets when I got it from thomann. All good now tho

Nice job! Just wonder if you have a dodgy D string. I set up an old 80's Westone guitar for a mate and the high E was crazily misplaced but played in tune til restrung. The physics didn't add up. Hi John! I'm thinking of buying a HB TE-90 but I'm not sure I can rearrange the bridge myself so... How necessary it is to change it and is it fully fuctional and playable with the original bridge? And if it isn't, how hard it is to do the modification (filling the old holes and drilling new ones) myself? Thank you for your time and for reviewing this great sounding guitar! PS. Will the tuning stability improve with non-staggered tuners (better, not the stock ones obviously) but with roller string trees?
@JRobsonGuitar
@JRobsonGuitar 5 жыл бұрын
The original bridge is fine... I just fancied something made of brass as I've noticed this has affected the tone positively on other guitars. You definitely need to get rid of the original string tree as it causes too much friction. The stock tuners are OK but a new set of (much better) Vanson pegs are only about £20 so it seems an easy & obvious upgrade.

I like the look of these guitars, however, every video review on them has some sort of issue, yes your right all of these budget guitars have cheap parts, which makes sense to keep the cost low, plus they all need a good setup, so after upgrading pots tuner and bridge your looking at another 150 pounds this is including a good setup, so are they worth it, or are you better off getting a midrange guitar, I think the latter to be honest,
@JRobsonGuitar
@JRobsonGuitar 6 жыл бұрын
I don't mind doing the set up work myself so that's not an issue for me. Also, buying a mid price guitar is no guarantee of a good set up. I also enjoy putting my own stamp on a guitar which is why I prefer a basically OK cheap guitar that I can set up & customize.

John Robson Guitarist thanks a lot. Did you use a drill stand or is it something that can be done by hand?

Cool...Care ful with the Mike Oldfield solo though.....The stupid eu article 13 might be red flagging ya...copyright ya know. Dave Simpson is collectin the things like confetti..even for an improvised 12 bar blues..someone must have copyrighted a 12 bar blues ....

Question: did the new, narrower bridge solve the problem of your high E string pulling off the bottom of the neck? My Tele has that issue so I’m considering a new bridge.
@lone-wolf-1
@lone-wolf-1 5 жыл бұрын
Buzz Kemper - I'm maybe late, but you could try what I did: loosen the neck a tiny bit, hold the guitar by the upper neck and give the upper horn a good wack. The neck will shift towards the thick strings, and for the thin strings you have more room. Don't forget to tighten the neck again

@@lone-wolf-1 Thanks, Axy. I did do that and it seemed to help, but it needed more than I was comfortable doing, so I brought it to my local guitar shop and they worked their magic. Problem is now solved and I am a happy player!

Hi, just wondering if you could comment on the neck profile? I've had one of these in my watch list for a while and have wounded about the neck, is it a skinny little thing or some meat to it?
@JRobsonGuitar
@JRobsonGuitar 6 жыл бұрын
Definitely not a skinny 80s shred neck, but not a telegraph pole either. It's quite Fender feeling, but with a flatter fingerboard.

So John, it seems there's nothing special about harley benton compared to any chineese or better, a Korean made guitar where we need to change all the important hardware to make it better/playable. Eric C has a channel where he turned a couple of chineese guitars spectacular by keeping only the wood.

what J R says and does to his guitars is sensible and cost effective BUT oh dear using pliars to undo the nuts on machine heads is unforgivable surely he can afford a set of spanners even ALDI ones are better than pliars
@JRobsonGuitar
@JRobsonGuitar 5 жыл бұрын
Yeah... I'm a bit of a spanner for doing that. Truth is that I did the job with a spanner, but had to recreate the picture due to the SD card on my phone having an infestation if Gremlins the pliers were close at hand & I just grabbed them for the pic. Sorry... Don't do this at home, kids 😀
