Great ingredients. Pumice and Coco are great for aeration. I know it's an extra step but I do rinse and strain the Coir to get rid of excess salts and the fine particles that turns into sludge....the mix will be a lot more fluffier.
@GoodandPlanty3 жыл бұрын
interesting! maybe i'll give that a try one of these batches.

@@GoodandPlanty Definitely won't hurt to try on a small batch like enough for a 1 gallon or smaller pot. The marijuana growers on KZbin are adamant about rinsing. They have great videos about this.

So I also got a giant brick of coco coir my first time and had.. a ton of fun breaking it down lol. I ended up taking a hack saw to it and that worked pretty well.

This is so good! I’m totally gonna buy that same orchid bark bc the stuff I got is way too big. I’m slowly making the move to making my own soil too and worm castings are on the list. Definitely looking forward to learning more about peat moss and the environment too because I only just learned about it being bad a few weeks ago. It would be cool if you got two of the same plant and used a cheaper big box soil with one and then your amended soil with the other, but all conditions the same otherwise and compare over time

Worm castings!! They are versatile imo. I think they help with recovery plants too. I started using that same soil mix for my plants some time last Spring. It becomes a little expensive. I still have the different ingredients and decided on house plant soil with amendments instead. I did not feel all my plants were happy. They have all been thriving since. Good luck with the change. 😉

Hello! I loved the video, subscribed and liked! I’m just starting out with plants and would love your help. We don’t have coco coir here and I can’t really spend that much on soil. Would it be ok to just use regular soil mix + perlite and orchid bark as additive. The plants that I have are monstera deliciosa, monstera monkey leaf and a lot of pothos.

Also what would you suggest the % to be if its ok for the soil to be like that?

Great video! I’m a new subscriber. I have a question about the “shelf life” of homemade potting soil. Can I make up a huge batch and keep it indefinitely? How quickly do you typically use yours up?
@GoodandPlanty3 жыл бұрын
i think you can store soil for a while! i would just make sure the coco coir is fully dry and that you have a pretty secure, air tight container. i go through my batches every 2 months or so, but i could store it for way longer. when in doubt, the packaging of each ingredient may have some insight.

Hey! I have some of this mix leftover (it's AMAZING btw)- I'm wondering if the leftover mix can be amended for cacti? If so, what kind of ratios would you go for? Or...would it make more sense to start from scratch?

you can totally amend it! just add more pumice/perlite and you can even add things like sand.

Do you use both pumice and orchid bark for cost effectiveness? (i.e. orchid bark being more expensive so it is better not to solely rely on it to make up the aerating component?)
@GoodandPlanty3 жыл бұрын
Actually, no! But that's a good bonus. I use both because I like having additives with a variety of moisture retention. For example, some plants' roots really like orchid bark but using exclusively orchid bark as my additive wouldn't add enough aeration.
@kiarasuzuki3 жыл бұрын
@@GoodandPlanty Interesting! Thanks for the explanation, I always wondered why some people use a bajillion aerating ingredients.

Also how did it go when you tried breaking the coco coir brick? I could NOT break it off and had such a problem so I just got the whole brick wet ... now I am trying to dry off what I didn't use so I can store it away until I need it again. Curious to see how you stored any left over coco coir
