Bringing home a new puppy? The transition to a new home can be scary for your new baby. And one particular concern is that your new puppy stops eating. Sometimes, your puppy doesn't want to eat when you first bring her home. But it is critical that you help her maintain her blood sugar levels.
I'm going to give you 3 simple steps to help with your new puppy and make sure she eats and maintains her blood sugar levels during this stressful time. Don't let your puppy be a picky eater. Also, don't worry about how much or how little to feed your puppy at first. It's just important that she eats often, every day, to maintain her blood sugar levels. Well. That Dempsey Diddly Doo ? I took him out of my coat where he travelled all the way from the breeder via train and then bus, and within an hour he was eating his kibble (with gloves to follow!) It's strange that he suddenly refuses to eat something that he wolfed down before, but I think that's him being a Diva. If he hasn't eaten a meal I offer it to him whilst he's sitting on my shoulder and suddenly he's the captain of the clean plate club.😆 I blame the parents.😍 💖 🐕💅 Those little sweetie pies are treasures aren't they?!

I wasn’t prepared for my puppy not to eat, and it’s so hard to watch. The breeder said that it may happen, but I didn’t think it would go past day 4. I’ve been force feeding him baby food with a syringe (as instructed) and he seems to be doing well, as he’s going to the bathroom regularly. We’re on a schedule. I limit his play and ensure he gets a lot of sleep. I just wish he would eat consistently. Thank you for all the advice.

You are so welcome and I’m so glad you’ve got him on this schedule. He wouldn’t have made it 4 days if you hadn’t. Have you tried getting down on the floor with him and getting your face real close to his and giving him baby talk while you hand him tiny pieces of chicken? The baby talk up close in the face seems to be one of the fastest ways to help them trust you. Best of luck to you and your sweetie pie.

I let him eat out of my hand and even put the food on the floor or on a little saucer plate. It’s definitely a test in patience. Oh and the nutrition gel worked wonders. He loved it. ❤

Mine was so scared & upset when we first got him, he was four months old at the time & so upset. I turned the radio on cause I know music is soothing to animals same as it is us, not hard rock or anything with screaming or yelling in it. There was a Carpenters song on & I started softly singing it to him & he calmed down & for a while every night at bedtime we went to sleep to music. He still likes for me to sing to him & loves for me to put his name in songs, I think it’s so cute & funny. So try singing to your new puppy or playing music; something soothing like Country or an Oldies station is best. All of my Dogs like music and when we leave we either leave the TV on or the Radio cause they are used to hearing it when we’re home so they don’t notice we aren’t there as much. 😊💕💕💕💕

My little Finney is 10 weeks old now and has settled into our home so well and wants to eat after every nap. I’m trying to only put down his softened kibble three scheduled times a day and leave the hard kibble down all the time, but sometimes he just really only wants the softened kibble. I know that eating the hard stuff is good for his teeth and firmer poops, so should I stick to my guns and only put the soft stuff down at three scheduled times or let him have it anytime he wants?

My female chihuahua is almost 4 months old and when she first came home with me she was a very big eater, but for some reason 2 weeks ago she stopped eating her food and will only eat chicken and her treats. She's had her 2nd round of boosters and gets her 3rd round on the 16th. She will run and play all day so i don't think that she's sick. She weighed 7.8 pounds at her last appointment. I'm not sure what i'm doing wrong. Can you please help me out with this.

Hello, loss of appetite can be brought on by parasites so take a fresh stool sample to the vet to check that off your list. If she does not have parasites, the likely culprit is her training you. Dogs are very smart and figure out quickly how to manipulate and get what they want. Chicken and treats are yummier than kibble so she’s likely learned to hold out until you give her what she wants. She needs the fiber and nutrients from the kibble so I recommend to eliminate ALL chicken and treats and be more stubborn than she is. She’s not a tiny girl so there’s no concern over low blood sugar. At 7.8 pounds she can go all day long without any food at all and she’ll be just fine. By the second morning with no chicken or treats available, I’m certain she’ll cave in and go back to her kibble. Best of luck

Oh no, you have to get him to eat something to avoid hypothermia which can be fatal. If he won’t eat a healthy kibble for now just get him to eat something. I recommend chicken and rice. Eventually as he settles in and becomes more comfortable in his new home he should go back to kibble

We’ve had our chihuahua, Doby, for a little over a year now. The concern: Doby is still suckling on his blanket and will massage with his paws. Almost like he’s trying to get milk out. I noticed he does this after we have done an activity that’s tiring for him or shortly after he shows his favorite blanket some love (if you know what I mean lol) and on a rare occasion he will do it out of nowhere. Some times he whines during it, a sad whimpering whine.. We have video of it and I can try to post it on KZbin tonight (Friday night). Do y’all, or any of your fans, know what’s going on? Hello, loss of appetite is extremely common when a young puppy goes through any kind of stress and moving to a new place is one of the most stressful times in their life. I recommend to go ahead and soak his kibble for now just to encourage him to eat. You might even try soaking it in chicken broth to make it extra irresistible. Also, try hand feeding him and baby taking him to encouragement him to eat. He can’t go long without calories before he’ll get hypoglycemia. He needs to eat a little bit, every few hours. You can also supplement his diet with Nutri-cal once or twice a day if he still refuses to eat. I wish you and him the very best ❤️

@@SweetiePiePets I got my Maltipoo pup a couple of days ago and took her to get her shot the next day, she started getting sick having diarrhea and throwing up, we gave her chicken in a can, chicken broth, white rice, crushed dog food and she was eating it fine and was starting to do better, but ever since yesterday afternoon she has not wanted to eat anything at all and we have to give her nutrical so she does not start having seizures or getting dizzy

@@jozlynjanay2375 I’m so sorry to hear she’s sick. If you can get her back into the vet today I definitely recommend it. I recommend a parvo test ASAP. Diarrhea and vomiting are symptoms of many things, but Parvo is what first comes to mind. The earlier you catch it and get treatment, the better 🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻

I have a little one that will literally only eat chicken and a very very rare piece of dry food we have tried everything we supplement his meals with a vitamin and mineral supplement and make sure the kibble is always on offer just in case, he's thriving after a year so dont panic even on such a limited diet my vet tells me he is in perfect health. Oh and he is a tiny one also just over 2 kg.

@@gingersmurf1207 Really? Glad to hear i'm not the only one. My pup Aiko has been through a lot. Liver infection and low blood sugar, hospital for days.. so she obviously lost weight. But even now that she's better she's still so skinny and tiny for her age. She's 5 months old and barely weighs 900g. I really hope she'll look and be as healthy as yours ! If I may ask, what is that kibble yours seem to like? Maybe it will work for Aiko too :)

@@annamayssa8614 ​ @anna mayssa we use Canine Choice but it is only very rarely that he will eat it and only if he can forage for it lol never out of the bowl that is always available we also have to have a special pillow that has long strands that we hide it in and sometimes he will go play on there and fish some out and eat it, good job he's adorable cos boy is he quirky he will also sometimes eat some of our other dogs huge dry food but only if he finds a piece on the cupboard floor where its kept!

Hello, congratulations on your new precious sweetie pie. So first off, as long as he’s happy and energetic, don’t worry because he’s likely consuming enough calories to keep him going. That said, Cesar wet food does not sufficiently cover his nutritional needs. I recommend you add a healthy kibble to the wet food at about a 50/50 radio at first and then slowly eliminate the wet food and leave him with just dry kibble. I feed all of mine life’s abundance kibble. I like it because it has the correct balance of protein/fat/fiber for canines. Plus it’s packed full of probiotics. Many brands claim they have probiotics, however they sit on some warehouse shelf for 6 months or a year before the consumer even brings the bag home. By that point, most of the probiotics are dead. Life’s abundance only makes small batches and ships it directly to the consumer so at most, the bag is 6 weeks old before your sweetie pie eats it. Add some extra yummy canned food in and then get down on the floor so you are face to face with her and then baby talk her while you hand her tiny bites of the food. You should also give her Nutrical so her blood sugar doesn’t drop. The baby talk works like a charm

Hello, I’m very sorry to hear about your scary situation. Vomiting and diarrhea can be caused by a number of things. Probably the most common would be a parasite, such as Giardia or coccidiosis. What medicine did the doctor prescribe? A more serious diagnosis would be a virus such as Parvovirus. This could be deadly for your puppy as they often die of dehydration before they are able to fight off the virus. In any case, you need to keep your puppy hydrated, even if it means force feeding him water with a syringe. Also need to do your best to get him to eat so he does not get low blood sugar, which can also be fatal. I would try feeding him a diet of rice and chicken for now until he is better I wish you and your puppy the very best 🙏🏻

Oh no! And the hospital is a very stressful place for him to be. Have you tried hand feeding him irresistible food while you baby talk? I recommend doing that multiple times a day. He should eat about a table spoon of food every 3-4 hours to prevent low blood sugar. I hope your sweetie pie gets better soon 🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻

@@crystalceja8504 the most common time for them to get low blood sugar is when they first leave their mother and go to their forgave home. Since you said he is only 1 pound, I’m assuming he is quite young and only came to you recently. This is THE MOST stressful time in a puppy’s life. Everything is new to them and everything they’ve known their whole life has just been taken away from them, including their mommy. It’s for this reason I won’t let my puppies leave until they’re 10 weeks old. Give him extra, extra love and attention during this time so he can bond with you. Psychologically speaking, the hospital is the worst place for him to be because he’s probably scared to death. He’s in a cold and foreign place with no one he knows, and lots of animals making strange sounds.... maybe even howling and crying. None of this is going to encourage him to eat. Physically the hospital may be where he needs to be since they are working to save his life by keeping his blood sugar stable,. But meanwhile he may be developing reactive attachment disorder because he has no one to cuddle and reassure him.... no one to bond with. I have years of experience getting little puppies to eat in spite of a poor appetite and I prefer my methods over sending them to the hospital. As soon as he is strong enough to come home I recommend you spend every second of every day with him cuddling, cooing, petting, baby talking, and hand feeding him. I would even sleep with him at night. He needs a mommy one right now. As long as he eats a table spoon of food every 3 hours, he should not develop low blood sugar. I am not a veterinarian so of course my advice should be considered in that light, I’m not recommending you go against your veterinarians recommendations. But keep in mind the hospital makes money as long as he’s there, and he’s not bonding with you as long as he’s there. He should regain his appetite as soon as he feels bonded and happy. I hope he gets to come home today so that he can start bonding with you and regain his will to live ❤️❤️❤️ keep him fed and feeling loved, protected and secure. I wish you and him the very best

@@SweetiePiePets first off thank you so so much for replying . I truly appreciate you taking time to respond . Yes I only had him for a week before I had to take him to the hospital. And he’s been in twice in the last week . I am so sad and I feel so sad seeing him like this . I grew so attached to him in so little time . And I agree I’ve already spent over 2,000 dollars in vet bills and I tried my hardest to keep him healthy but as soon as he started having seizures I knew I had no other choice but to admit him into the hospital . The first time he came home he was so delicate . He cried if we held him the wrong way because I’m sure his little body is sore and tense from his seizures . The dr said there is no way of knowing if there’s an underling condition because he is so tiny . But your words gave me hope . I’m really going to keep a strict feeding schedule and try to make him as comfortable as possible . He had such a spunky attitude when I first got him . I have such bad guilt now . I feel like I did this to him . Are there any foods at all or anything you recommend to keep his sugar levels up ? And is there a reason he hardly drinks water as well?

I hope you got him from a good breeder and I hope the breeder tells all adopting families about the dangers of low blood sugar for tiny puppies. Most people don’t even know that’s a thing so education is key and it’s the breeder’s responsibility to educate the new families. I also hope he was old enough to leave his mamma. Some breeders are dishonest and let their puppies leave when they’re too young. Often they lie about the age to make it appear the puppy is smaller than it is. Sometimes they sell a 5-6 week old puppy claiming it’s 8-10 weeks. Obviously a 5-6 week old puppy is way too young to leave his mamma 💔 So I recommend trying several types of food to see what he likes best. Sometimes they will like one type of food for a few days and then suddenly turn their nose up at it and you have to be ready to try another type. Canned and soft foods are usually more irresistible than hard kibble.
