My New Recording/Writing Space, Plus a Bookshelf Tour!

Come take a look at my new recording and writing space! I include a bookshelf tour of the shelves behind my workspace, which are predominantly fantasy and are a work in progress.

That's actually a pretty nice collection! Just the right mix of old & new, pristine & worn-out, MMPBs & Hardbacks, and of all kinds of shapes & sizes. I totally get the whole OCD point, but this almost has its own vibe to it, and I'm all for it. Sometimes you do need those oldies on your shelves, those with multiple cracks up the spine, and certainly those with fond memories of the past. It's said a bookshelf tends to reflect a person's very own personality, and I totally agree!

Makes me feel less alone in my middle-aged-ness haha. That's the same Narnia set I got in the late 70s as a kid. After that came The Hobbit, and I've been a lost cause ever since. I have 17 editions of The Hobbit in 6 or 7 languages, including the rare "lion" cover. My brother is in Italy right now. I was like, don't come home empty handed haha.

Yes! It was a Dark Tower easter egg, imagine reading and realizing King is referencing your exact location, alas no abandoned lot but your apartment building. I think he used that corner because of the famous Italian restaurant across the street, The Palm.

Have you considered getting it done in actual stained glass? After a cursory glance at etsy out of curiosity it looks like a custom piece like that would be $400~$500, but it would look so awesome.

A most excellent book collection Dr Chase! I want to encourage you to bump "Parable of the Sower" up on your read-next list. I highly recommend it as it is an amazingly prophetic story, while the same time a very sobering view of what our society may be in store for. If your have read the "The Road" by by Cormac McCarthy, I would venture that it is even more realistic in what a we could, unfortunately, be lurching towards.

I just saw your latest video on your bookshelf tour. You have a nice space there. I haven't looked at your videos in a while but I am subscribed to your channel, so I check out what you've posted from time to time. While you were going through your bookshelves I noticed that there are two authors that I've read that were not on your bookshelves. Oh, by the way, you have read more fantasy than I have. Anyway, the first author is Stephen R. Lawhead. He has written a lot of books but one series in particular may fit your interests. It is "The Bright Empires" series which consists of five books. These are "The Skin Map," "The Bone House," "The Spirit Well," "The Shadow Lamp," and "The Fatal Tree." I really enjoyed this series, especially the switch in time frames from different epochs in the past to the present. Another author that I really like is Iain Pears. He has written several different books in different genres. All of his books are excellent. He wrote a fantasy book entitled "Arcadia" which I also really enjoyed. There is a Tolkien link in the book. You might want to check them out. Thanks; Greg.

This is a reader’s shelf. Motley collection of mass market, trade paperback, hardcover, Amazon print on demand….followed by a higher tier of leatherbound classics. Interesting that Janny Wurts is the only series you have collected in a proper trade hardcover format. My shelfs used to look much like yours. However, I mainly read on Kindle now, which has allowed me to eliminate all paperbacks. I now have a way too large collection of display hardcovers lol. But I have learned that reading the intellectual work, is a different hobby than collecting a physical object. Book collecting and reading are odd, in that there is a crossover, and people get angry and snooty when they are not 100% aligned.

I'm not much of a collector, truth be told, but I do love books as objects. I am toying with the idea of trying a Kindle reader, but I haven't reached that decision yet. Cheers!

Philip your shelves are a thing of beauty! A true reader's shelf, battered and beloved next to brand new and unknown, along with the ever present library gaps. Did you jump or were you pushed into the basement? I have to wonder, is it a mighty man-cave or is it a banishment of disorder from what seems the incredibly zen surrounds of the rest of the house? I had to laugh at the physical copies of your own trilogy (I have them on Kindle) you fell into the cliche! They get longer as you go 😆. I'm a bit jealous of your hard cover of The Renegades of Pern, it's so pretty - I didn't know you enjoyed that series too, I'm interested in if you continued into the Todd McCaffrey days? Your more 'scholarly' books certainly add gravitas to the standard booktuber set up, some of those books are simply beautiful. Speaking for myself, having my books up and around me, does create a sort of spiritual comfort nook, I can only hope you've made the same for yourself. Lovely seeing your new space. Thanks Philip 😘

Looks terrific, and the shelves are great, but Dr Fantasy label is too far away, it should be front and centre! Love the poster with you cover as well! Everything looks so orderly in your shelf, that's great -- mine is a mess of horizontal and vertical arrangements meant to maximise occupation xD American Gods! Looking great! I enjoyed your book tour. My books are arranged according to two principles, one mine and one my husband's. Believe me, that was a hard agreement to arrive to 😂 I want them arranged according to their belonging to the same series, in reading order and, preferably, all books of the same author hanging out together. He likes them arranged according to aesthetics, colors and sizes (I distinctly remember coming home from work one day and being greeted by husband's smiling face, telling me how my books had been messy but now they are finally ordered and that he had worked the entire day to re-order them. According to size. My Malazan books starting with Fall of Light and then Dust of Dreams, and so on, a complete mess. I felt like throwing a fit of rage, but he was so happy about what he had done for me, so instead I silently grabbed them one by one and I began to re-arrange them 😂.That was a really close one, could have ended in a crime of passion :P ) So my books are currently arranged according to a compromise between our two needs. Therefore, Abercrombie neighbors Sarah J Mass' Throne of Glass by virtue of them being mostly white (at least the first), and so on. The fancy edition ones all cluster together for being the prettiest. By the way, have you tried reading Sarah J Mass? I read Throne of Glass and the Court of Thorns and Roses, both series. The first book in Throne of Glass was, according to me, pretty bad. However, the series got increasingly better to the point that it managed to surprise me and even squeeze some tears before the end. Not only was it very enjoyable by the time it was over, but I appreciated her journey, from a first book i thought to be a disaster to a series that I enjoyed a lot (sorry, book reviewing is your job, not mine 😁) And I see you didn't say anything about your Doctor Fantasy sign over there. It was the best item on display. ;)

Really love the new setup. I like your style Phillip but I really enjoy your more candid and relaxed approach when talking books. The way you talk about books when on live streams is way more charismatic and interesting. You see a bit of that whenever you actually start your book shelf tour.
