Following up on a series of seven videos in which I discuss my top ten fantasy authors in terms of how much thought they provoke, how many tears they wring from readers, how much laughter they elicit, the brilliance of their prose, the awesomeness of their action, the epicness of their world building, and the weirdness they evoke, I compile the numbers to determine who my top ten fantasy authors are overall. All seven of the videos and this video are collected in the "Best of Fantasy" playlist on my channel.

Happy to see the reappreciation of Janny Wurts. I've been reading her for decades and her work was often dismissed as purple and overwrought. That's not an unfair criticism but that same weakness often manifests as a strength. I hope her books become more widely available. Even as someone intentionally searching her out, they were nearly impossible to find before Amazon and ebooks.

Your number one totally shocked me!🤣🤣🤣 The last list like this on this channel was over three years ago? Now that is surprising because that was the first Philip Chase video I ever watched and it means I'm watching this channel for over three years. Apart from two authors that I haven't read yet all the others would be on my list so not necessarily in the same order. Also, I of course need to reserve a place for that other fantasy writing medievalist. Great video, Philip! Especially for somebody who still claims that he doesn't like making top 10 lists!😁

Thanks, Ed! I was delighted that Papa Gwynne made the list, and it seemed appropriate to me that he tied with GRRM. Both authors write amazing action, and while very few can compete with GRRM when it comes to world building, John Gwynne is among the elite (Hobb, Erikson, Tolkien) when it comes to authors who make me emotional and turn on the tears. Great to see so many fantastic writers on this list, many of which my own favourites! I too am a big fan of Lawrence’s writing, especially The Broken Empire trilogy- there’s genius in the subtlety of his prose, quite unique to him. Loved how you went about this top list, and it was fun to see all of our overlaps as well as to get excited for all the incredible authors I have yet to try! I haven't yet dived into Lawrence, Wolfe, or Wurts, and have only dipped my toes into Le Guin's works, so I have so much ahead to discover. Right with you on the emotional side of John Gwynne combined with that gritty action, and the many talents of both Esslemont and Erikson! I maintain that Night of Knives is the single most underrated Malazan work there is -- what a gripping tale! I just finished up Fool's Assassin and was utterly blown away by Hobb yet again -- what a master at deep character work!

So many great authors out there. Off the bat though: Hobb, Gwynne, Abercrombie, and Abraham would make mine. Erickson & GGK has potential as A Song for Arbonne was one of my favorite reads of 2024 thus far but it's the only GGK book I have read and read only up to Deadhouse Gates with Erikson's work. I love that: "part of my DNA" when talking about Le Guin. For me, Patrica A Mckillip is a part of my DNA. I love no one else's prose more than hers. She turned me into a book worm at the age of 9. I told her that when i met her in person at a convention - so glad to have been able to meet her. Brandon Sanderson's work dominated much of my life since 2012. I should read more fantasy but i haven't picked up a book in the past 2 years. i've been watching anime, now addicted to anime OST's, openings/outros and Japanese pop music because of anime (also going to Japan later this year). I've been watching a lot of Adam Taggart lately on finances/economics lately while doing puzzles, too--so I find things to keep me from picking up a book. Hope to get back to reading.

It was really interesting to watch my reaction to that video, because with all the great authors you told us at the start that didn't make the cut, I wasn't sure if that list would actually vibe with me. 30 minutes later and I think that this is probably one of the most perfectly crafted top tens I ever saw. I haven't read all of the authors on that list, but from those I have and especially because of how you commented on them, I immediately want to rectify that mistake. Which adds to my already vast tbr, but who cares about that. Three authors I really love (and are rarely mentioned in lists like this) that , at least at the moment, would probably make my own top 10 list, are Anthony Ryan, Robert Jackson Bennett and Martha Wells. And with all three, it's probably the diversity of their writings that make me such a big fan. With all three, you basically have no idea what to expect next, when they open a new chapter in their writing. If you read Martha Well's Ile-Rien books, she basically changes the setting and the subgenre within a single series, and it makes complete sense. Not to speak of the jump to the Sci-Fi-genre with her crazy Murderbot series. Ryan's Raven Shadow's trilogy (and the follow-up Raven's Blade duology) is, in my opinion, probably the best Epic fantasy written in the last 10+ years and then he suddenly goes Steam/Magipunk with his equally great Draconis Memoria trilogy. And if we're talking about weird, Bennett's Divine Cities trilogy has tons of that, and then he completely shifts gears with the Foundryside novels. I could basically put them in any of the categories you wrote about and argue why they belong there. And while I haven't read everything they have put out so far, the things I don't have rank very, very high in my pile.

@@PhilipChaseTheBestofFantasy The Gardens of the Moon is soooo good! I started by listening to the audio book on Libby as a taste-test, and knew I was sold on Malazan by Chapter One, when I realized that I had been completely pulled into the world (hearing about Sorry and Rigga) and I had lost all sense of my real life surroundings! That sensation rarely happens to me, so I was sold there and then 😁😊🙌👌👏 Heard that GotM is Erikson's weakest book, so wow, holy smokes, am I ever looking forward to reading more then! But I'm OK with that because my tastes have shifted in other directions while still including fantasy books. An author I'd have to include high on my list would be Anne Rice. The prose is exceptional with so many beautiful quotes, and the world building is like no other, and the battle scenes will have you reading pages on end in one breath. It's a Name of the Winds meets Dune kind of book. It's told from a first person POV so it's easy to digest and understand. And the protagonist goes through so much he'll break your heart. Abercrombie has been my favorite author for a while, but you've pointed out a few others here I really need to get around to (Steven Erikson being key among those). I'm also very excited you're planning on reading more GGK! He's another top author for me because of his emotional, poetic prose and characters who pull on your heartstrings. There is a sense of history and timelessness to his work that I struggle to describe...he's obviously captivated by good story and lore. I've heard several people recommend his "Tigana" or "Lions of Al-Rassan," but my personal favorite was "Under Heaven." His sequences are so vivid, beautiful, and fresh...I can't wait to hear your thoughts as you dig in!

Ursula K LeGuin and Wolfe tying for the same place is poetic. They were contemporaries, friends and greatly respected each other as authors. Le Guin is famously quoted as saying that Wolfe is “Our Melville”. Also - if you do read more of Wolfe’s work you might realise that he belongs in a lot more of the categories you have made. The Worldbuilding in The Wizard Knight is absolutely beautiful and the ending of sequence of “The Wizard “ will knock your socks off ! This video was so great, Philip. So happy you included George R.R. Martin. I can't wait to dive into Janny Wurts. I think I'm going to make an official TBR so I can keep myself disciplined. I'm quite a mood reader, but I don't know if that's actually good for me. As for Book of the New Sun, the series is profoundly good. I love your point about loving a book but not necessarily enjoying it. I definitely enjoyed the first book in the traditional sense of that word, but I, like you, am not so sure I "enjoyed" the last three. I wrestled with them, is more accurate. I taught A Wizard of Earthsea in my Fantasy and SF Lit course. The kids loved the Taoist themes, the originality, and the poetic qualities you mentioned. Tolkien is likely always going to be my favorite. Here's a BookTube question: Do you think KZbin viewers would appreciate deep dive episodes of each of the books? Or is that space too saturated? Is there too much Tolkien content? I've been considering doing that this summer, as I've been teaching LOTR for 4 years now. Worth doing, or no?
@PhilipChaseTheBestofFantasy

Thank you, Jordan! To answer your question, the experience I've had, unfortunately, is that Tolkien-related content does okay but not very well in our corner of BookTube. There are very successful Tolkien-focused channels, but I think that audience must be different from most of mine. That said, if you're passionate about it, go for it, and I hope you prove me wrong. Also, "wrestling" is a great way to describe my experience with Book of the New Sun. Cheers!

Any question if you might have, this is the answer “I think, it was cool.” I really like such beauty of simplicity in crafting. I don't know if you had mentioned, but this is supposedly one of it's primary strength, touching the surface of likehoodness (simplicity) first, instead of directly aiming for the backend of likehoodness (complexity) through a bypass. I'll have to read Steven Erikson. I've heard he has unique structures, which is a great way to hook me. I like not knowing where things are going, not knowing how to judge a character right off the bat, and books that feel organic and character driven rather than contriving to some pre-established plot model. I also like books that are explorations/journeys through interesting worlds, cultures, environments, and peoples.

For a fella such as you who admittedly hates making top 10 videos, yours have become my favs in this space!! Lol! Amazing video Philip! And what a list! I do wonder who will change positions in your estimation as you read more from specific authors! I predict Williams will move into your top ten perhaps in the future once you read more from him, and that Wurts will climb up a bit as well, as will Gwynne. And of course, I wonder if anyone can unseat Steven Erikson, though of course he is a more than worthy choice to top the list! As always you have taken a thoughtful, cerebral approach to compiling your list, and you should be commended for that. The only surprise for me from what I know of your tastes, was Martin over Abercrombie. I thought Martin's worldbuilding specifically would place him above Abercrombie for you, but I see your rationale of course. I'd have to say for me personally (although we'd all wish he'd find a way to finish ASOIAF) Martin is still near the top of my list. Thank you for posting this wonderful content, it has been riveting to see your choices on these matters! Great for inspiring discussion, debate, and love of reading great books! Happy reading!

Thanks so much, PL! Martin definitely beats Abercrombie when it comes to world building. Abercrombie didn’t even place in my world building video, whereas Martin placed very high.
