Jeep is to the US auto industry much like Harley is to the US motorcycle community in the sense that it is highly customizable and there is a culture about it. "Wrangler Jeep Wave". Riding a horse is crazy. Unique from anything else I've ridden. I've owned 4 Wranglers over the years. They're great trucks. The new fancy electronics take some getting use to. The engine cutting off without me cutting off is somthing I don't think I will.

The horse is beautiful, he has a nice nature and obviously likes you. I had horses for many years when I was young and adored them. They are gentle caring creatures and can be great fun to know. However, having outgrown horses to discover motorcycles and girls, I have to have a motorcycle in my life. That and a guitar. My daughter drove a Keep Wrangler four door in Melbourne Australia. It was great and I loved it. You are so right in saying torque is everything in a vehicle. My HD Heritage Softail Classic is bliss for eating up the kilometres in Victoria where I live. My view; get the horse, get the Jeep and get another motorcycle - plus a guitar. Then your life will be better. Enjoy !

I have had two Jeep Wranglers in the last five years. My wife still drive one of them. We brought a 2022 Toyota 4 Runner two years ago and I will NEVER ever buy a Jeep again. Prepare yourself for: 1. Check engine lights that continually play a prominent role in your life 2. Engine issues after 30k miles as small turbo engines are more expensive to repair and wear significantly more quickly in a heavy Jeep 3. Replacing the brake pads much more often (undersized brakes for weight of vehicle) 4. Very poor fuel economy. Thanks why they put the Turbo in it, but the V6 2022 4 runner engine has been around for 18+ years and is considered to be a gas guzzler buy US standards. My experience is that Jeep Wranglers use more fuel than the Toyota by at least 15-20%. 5. The quality of the interior parts is subpar. You will see that after several months the interior door panels and any place you touch will show wear and need replacement if you find it bothers you. Enough for now. Love old Defenders myself. I had a left hand drive 1985 Defender 110 in 2013-2015 that was completely restored and was my pride and joy. SUV meets farm tractor. The folks at Jeep would certain like you to feel like this is what they are offering you. It is not, just like the new Defender is only a Defender in name. I should mention that I had a new 2011 Range Rover Sport and while the quality of most things was great and it was amazingly powerful and fun vehicle to drive because of the high driving position and great seats, it had numerous electrical problems from the very first week I owned it. I am telling you this because I understand that how a vehicle looks and more importantly how it makes you feel when you drive it are very important. I know you will agree. I’m not sure the Jeep Wrangler in any trim level is a truck I can recommend despite the pull you seem to have towards the Jeep for understandable reasons. Please print this comment and put it somewhere where you will find it so in the event you purchase the Wrangler you may consider the purchase (better said “lesson”) and experience you may learn from and not repeat as I unfortunately did at one time. In any case, this is simply my personal experience that I am sharing and while I am not British, we are alike in many, many ways. I am 56, 6’ 3” 230 lbs and I think a BMW R18 is one of the best looking motorbikes ever produced. Best of luck!

Many years ago at the end of the 80's I spent some time at a friends place in Bangor in Northern Ireland. His family were seriously loaded and he had a garage full of old CZ and MZ motorbikes. At the time I wore a top hat with a large Ostrich feather sticking out the side. On one of the days we were riding about 5 of the bikes around a country lane when we came across a British Army checkpoint. Obviously they stopped us to find out what these five crazy lads are doing riding around mainly with no helmets, but also me in my top hat, lol. At first, the soldiers seemed apprehensive with us, for obvious reasons, but suddenly changed when they heard me shout from the back in my very broad Yorkshire accent 'what the F is all this about'. After that they were great and didn't really care that we were helmetless and mostly totally illegal on those bikes. Happy Days. On a separate day, I got to ride one of the family's horses bareback, which I might say was an amazing feeling of closeness with the animal. You should definitely get the Jeep. The Suzuki Jimny is all well good, but for a bloke of your stature a Jeep Rubicon LWB would make so much more sense. Oh, and maybe include your Mrs as a bike pillion from time to time perhaps. Just an idea...........

I think Suzuki Jimny is much much more reliable and cheaper to operate than any "Jeep". There was a bigger elongated 4-door Suzuki Jimny coming, but will it come to UK and EU, I have no idea. The regulation is erasing the offroaders from the market. But yeah, NOT HAVING a diff lock is a huge minus for a supposed off roader car. I think even the most basic 4WD Dacia Dusters have electronic or automatic diff locks, don't they? And a Dacia Duster would probably cost a lot less. And performed well to ok in auto reviews even against the Jimny, e.g. carwow's 'LADA Niva v Suzuki Jimny Dacia Duster'.. edit: no the duster has no central lock either, lol. :D

But the worst bit was the service from Jeep themselves. Ludicrously expensive (even for a main dealer), constantly trying to rip me off. Unlike a horse, a motorcycle isn't alive, and can't love you. However, a horse can't go fast enough to keep up with traffic. It needs daily attention, even when you are too tired or sick to ride. A motorcycle doesn't need five acres of pasture. And you don't have to clean out the poop where you store your motorcycle. And when a motorcycle dies, you don't have to dig a ten foot by six foot hole to bury it. It's a little hard on a horse, to expect it to take you on a 100 mile round trip in one day. Even a bicycle would be more practical.

When even one horse power is enough, an actual horse might do. Depends on the horse. That horse is acting like he is going to bite you or step on your foot, etc, by the way. Rule 1: Serious off-roader vehicles have to be worked on a lot. A lot. Just is. Modern Jeeps are sort of a styling exercise from the FIAT mother ship, Stellantis NV, with just enough residual build and engineering from 80 or years of experience to work well enough to survive a fun demo ride and impress. The thing is, Jeeps have always been a full owner engagement situation. Take one to Moab and you’re going to be opening the tool box. Drive one on the highway at 75-80 mph all day, same thing. It’s just the original on-off road utility concept. It’s not a trouble free mechanical concept. The collective memory is vaguely that Private Smith jumps out, takes off his helmet, and fixes it on the dirt road near Normandy as the troops file by so the Colonel can be on his way forward. They all wish it was them in the jeep and the colonel walking (if wishes were jeeps then soldiers would ride..)and they remember all that when they come home. Sons help with the surplus jeep resto in 1965. Sun, snow and rain. Mud, rock and asphalt. All ok. The idea is spectacular; but, like a motorcycle, its helps to be a gearhead that grew up on a farm or something and enjoy that part too. (Think Ural side-cars for the prototype of basic man-off-road-machine integration experience). Now the calendar flips to the current owners of the Jeep marque. The vibe is there, the archetype, but details are blurred by two or three generations of re-telling the experience. Lately in an Italian design studio. The ability to modify or fix a processor-laden internationally parted out off-road styling exercise from Alfa Romeo is not necessarily going to be what you might expect/hope for over time. It may have stretched too far. The new Rubicons are very competent off-road, right off the showroom floor. Once you break it - and you will break it - If you have a great dealer nearby, well, maybe. Don’t expect a bargain. Folks that want Corolla maintenance schedules from a Stellantis Jeep - or any Jeep - will be sad. The silly consumer ranking reporters are simply lost with these. No idea. Terrible they say. Well, yes and no. Folks that want the bike-like hands on customization satisfaction from the past will be bound only by their budget and be ok with it maybe. Easy to see new professionally modified Rubicon customs, serious items, for USD$150 K, plus. Not worth that IMO, unless it is to you. Reality is that the design concept has it that maintenance and repair is part of the ownership experience, it is functional, technical gear. The new ones are heavy on the pure style palette and fashion, however they still need considerable maintenance if used. That is nontrivial and expensive because of how they are designed and made, and maybe they are not so well suited to that part of the utility reality. A modern electronic transmission from FIAT for example, try modding or fixing that. So they break, as usual, and then, sadness. Buyer remorse. One reviewer star. Here in the US, the dealers are part of the problem in my opinion. It may well be that the UK dealer situation is a lot different. In England, I think a Defender restored, or even a new one, might make more sense. They can deal with some brutal stuff as well if you have a tool box. I apologize for all the wisdom, I am an old gear head in the US and have bikes and have had jeeps, tractors and various. In my opinion, for that mission, a properly restored and very mildly upgraded 1998-2004 Toyota 4X4 short bed pickup (here, a Tacoma) is ideal. Still won’t be cheap in the end (meaning it will be as expensive as you can tolerate and never as cheap as you might hope for, but always less than tarted up wonderful old land cruisers etc) but it will be really, really, good, has a huge aftermarket, and is inherently a brick of a vehicle. You can always sell one of these to somebody. Plus, looks awesome when done up right. Stellantis NV has *not, in my own humble opinion only, been good for Jeep. Sorry for running on.

I'm the same way with vehicles and bikes both. I like something unique, sometimes niche I guess, why i like Moto Guzzi a lot. The horseriding footage was pretty Kool ha. Only rode a horse once when I was a kid (I'm in the usa, kentucky which is like horse capital ha ha). I much prefer bikes to horses lol. Horses are beautiful animals though and I like to talk to and pet them though. Oh yeah the jeep make sure you ride it on the highway to see if you like the way they can track sometimes, depending on the type of tires on it. The new ones may be better but some that I've drove were not fun on the highway, they tend to track with the grooves of the road and wander really bad. Like I said the newer models with more road biased tires may be better though.

Do yourself a favour and avoid the Jeep and buy a 4Runner. Advice that shouldn’t be ignored.

Jeeps (like this one) with the body on frame design (vs unibody) are never, ever, EVER scrapped unless smashed to bits in a crash. People in the U.S. rebuild them in perpetuity. 1940s version on are still on the road. That says a lot about the long term. Is a Rover or Land Cruiser better? Maybe, but they do not have near the support of Jeep.

@@AF-O6 We are considering a few options but unfortunately cool Toyota Land Cruisers are not available in the UK. Landrover's we have had many, the new ones we do not like, they are very pricey for what they are and many go wrong 👍🏼

He he, I owned Samurais, Jeeps, Defender, Isuzu, Frontera and I know more or less all pros and cons of those to be honest. Many of them not new available any more on the market, thanks to EU and emission regulations... So the few survived the slaughter are highly complicated Euro 6 TD´s with ADBlue systems delighting their owners... I guess it will tripple your monthly costs over the Jimny at least. If you just want it, i would say "let it be", If you really need it, well go for it : )

Wrangler;; Romantic overkill. I thought Freddie was mad. Get a warranty. It WILL break. And don't crash it. I'd keep the Suzuki, but if you need 4wd with space and credentials there are far better options than a Jeep. A grey import Toyota kills it for cred and coolness. Especially a 70 series.

I’m on a roadtrip through Canada as we speak in a rental. It’s a brand new Jeep Compass with a 2.0 turbo engine and an 8 speed automatic transmission. The car looks and feels great, but it has some quirks and issues that are absolutely unacceptable in my point of view. Especially considering it’s a new car. I know it’s a different model but I also know that Stellantis isn’t the most reliable company.

@@MrDarcy-OlMan The gearbox can be very smooth , but then it gets confused when driving up a steep hill. It hesitates and trembles sometimes, I find that strange for a Jeep. The automatic climate control has a mind of its own. Other than that, it’s a really nice car. If I were in the market for a Compass, I would check out the competition first. I can’t comment on the Wrangler though.
