YAY! Me too-I went from an Africa Twin to a 390, LOVE IT. Since you aren't too concerned with blasting down the highway, you may consider a very popular mod; going to a 14t on the front. That will give more grunt in 1st gear yet barely noticeable at highway speeds. Oh also some Doubletake mirrors :) Have fun!

You made a great choice! Your reasoning for changing from a larger ADV bike to a smaller one is spot on. I downsized to a Z400 due to age and strength. I find going on the back country roads are so much better then the freeway. When I get to my destination, I am relaxed and discovered little towns with character. Small bikes are not beginner bikes, they are fun. I have had mine for 3 years and I still have a smile on my face. Congratulations on your new bike and I hope you have many wonderful adventures on it. Cheers.

Great choice. After break-in, it becomes a different bike. They love 6000rpm and above. Bar risers and foot pegs. You'll love it even more. Congrats

Great bike. You will enjoy it a lot. I, myself, downsized from a heavy 550Lb BMW R1150 to a new KLR 650. 100# lighter and the ability to wander off on unpaved roads is a blessing. Though I also enjoy taking my wife 2022 RE Himalayan. I am not excluding the idea of downsizing to a 400cc class in the next 5 years. Keep up the video coming.

Nice bike. I've done the same sort of downsizing since getting into my 70's. Got a Versys 300X now, but I stay on the pavement for the most part. I would encourage you to get some knobbies on that thing if you're going to spend much time on gravel/dirt roads. I had my front end nearly wash out on a well maintained gravel road just going around a gentle curve at an easy pace. I ride with Shinko 705's for the occasional short stint on gravel, but no longer tempt fate on dirt roads.

Congrats on your new bike. This spring I bought the Norden 901 Expedition. I've got just over a 1,000 miles on it now. I pinch myself every day, every mile. While a bigger bike, I'm 6', 1" (6', 3" in my boots). I run a saw mill and a frontend loader wrestling logs and boulders just about every week. My feet are flat on the ground sitting on the bike. Weight seems fine so far.

The best mod to date on the 390 is Fuel X lite. No more jerky throttle under 4000 rpm’s, nice and smooth and less clutch feathering while crawling. Still get that rush of power at 6300 rpm’s.

I am considering it. I want to do more research first as I don't understand fuel injection optimization.
@gkeller9958
@gkeller9958 11 ай бұрын
@@MySeniorMoments All it does is richen fuel throttle body from the factory lean setting that the manufacturers need to pass emissions. The “Lite” is a no fuss no muss. Install it and it learns the best setting while you ride. The “Pro” has the option of changing the settings, which can be a hassle to find the right setting. I have the Pro on my KLX and it took a month to find the best setting. They give to the setting on what mods you’ve done, but it only made it worse

The 390 Adv was born from the 390 Duke a street bike. The foor pegs are tilted forward so if you want to stand comfortably you will want to replace them with aftermarket ones along with the handlebar risers.
@bendingthetube
@bendingthetube 11 ай бұрын
Great choice! Happy to see you took the plunge. In addition to the handlebar risers I’d recommend the BlackDog foot pegs (larger platform, 1/2” lower overall, LEVELS the angle which is a big deal when standing), and consider the slightly taller 1-piece enduro seat from KTM (allows you to slide back and forth to adjust the effective seat height without having to “scoot up” on the pillion seat. I’ve got one you can try on your bike next time you’re up in Bend. I added a Givi windscreen device that clips on and diverts just enough air to eliminate buffering around the helmet. I’m 5’9” (also enjoying my “Senior Moments”) but my inseam is 32”.

Awesome! Im at 3k miles with my 390 and love it. Big kudos to BlackDog Cycle foot pegs and heavy duty skid plate. I swapped out stock windshield for the MadStad windshield, can adjust lower for offroad, really great wind buffeting for longer rides. ADVMatt has great info on suspension, im 6' tall 215lbs and I jacked preload to about 80% front and back and it made a great ride even better, especially offroad. Happy trails!

I actually don't struggle to pick it up that much ( (at least on flat ground) but I just never feel totally confident on it, especially off pavement. Congrats on your new bike. It's a nice one. I got it myself. I've ridden the T7 briefly and previously owned the Honda CRF300L. On dirt roads the you'll be churned a lot more than what you're used to. The T7 and the CRF are a lot better there imo. Both, the CRF and the 390Adv have very little vibrations. I think it will depend on the amount of off-road riding if you'll be happy with it. The more off-road, the better the CRF. The CRF isn't really taller than the 390Adv...only on paper. On tarmac the 390Adv is the nicer one, but the CRF can do that too. Just not quite as fast and comfortable. Tensioning the chain on the 390Adv is a tricky one I figured. Strangely enough it tensions when the bike is loaded. That means you have to leave a buffer when it's unloaded on a stand...very odd and difficult to manage...I wasn't able doing it by myself. It was a time consuming exercise. Doing it by the manual didn't work. Is there anyone else having this problem?

I am super glad you got a smaller bike the T7 was too heavy for an old man to ride ! I know I'm and old man too ! the issue I think you'll notice the most with the bike is the power after the Monster power of the T7 it's going to feel lack luster at best.... But give it a chance and after break-in just give it more throttle than your used to giving a bike... I noticed that on my XR650L.... you have to give it alot more throttle than I am used to... if you do that you will quickly be impressed with the power of the smaller bike ! I know that sounds kind'a stupid like DUH you gott'a give it more throttle because it is a smaller bike ! but seriously I think the throttle's are more placid now than the old days back in the Honda 350cc days a twist of the wrist gave you full throttle but now that is only about half way on the throttle my XR650L is that way the throttle is very slow ! and I suspect the KTM 390 is the same way. this is actually a good thing.... on rocky roads your not likely to throttle up when you don't want to, because of a bump ! and with a torquey bike that can get you into trouble ! Hang in there neighbor ! and ride safe !

By the way.. I am 5’7” 30 inch leg. I love the difference the. Rox risers made. Also getting some different foot pegs, not canted forward like the stock. The stock skid plate is junk. I bought the KTM power sports edition. Trouble with it is, it’s OK for light offloading. It is bolted to the bottom of the engine… not so good. It will cost twice as much for a better one…. I also recommend, you consider eliminating the muffler. It weighs probably 5 pounds., and is cooking the rear shock. I spent the money for a good one made in Oregon, WerkesUsa not made China. The stock muffler is fine. I happen to have a akrapovic slip on, so a little bit loud. They’re still keeping the catalytic converter., and the oxygen censoring place. It will run fine. Today convinced me I made the right choice , replacing the stock mirrors for doubletakes. I would’ve broken the stock ones… enjoy your new bike!

I’ll be very interested in the reliability and durability experience you have with your new KTM 390! I’ve looked at this model a number of times but the rumor mill has it that there can be, they say too often etc etc, engine issues. So many times this sort of thing is just made up and not true. So I hope your experience is positive and sets this more to rest. Cheers.

I post any issues I have with the 390 to my channel. Hopefully not many!

There was some problems on the first year's of the 390A. But those seemed to be fixed as I too have a 23' model. Only real extra that's needed is a FuelX Lite to help make the lower RPM's more usable. Everything else is preference. Also, the next 390A (2025) will be a lot different and then engine will be bumped up a little.

I'm glad you are liking the KTM 390. Good price on it as well. It looks like you have spoked wheels, but do I guess they aren't tubeless? Ride on, be safe!

I believe they have tubes. Even the dealer was not sure, so I will take a wheel off and check myself.

I'm 90% sure "tubeless" will be molded into the sidewall....like the size and brand is...but fairly small print

They may be tubeless. I have a 890 adventure with spoked wheels and the dealer thought they were not tubeless, but they are.

I have a 390 adventure one thing to know on these bikes is they really want to be wound out. After you do the first break in oil change keep the revs above 5k on the road and you will see what I mean. I run it in a lower gear than my other bike sometimes 2 gears lower it's a really engaging and fun bike that way. It is derived from a naked sport bike so you have to ride it more like that type of bike.
