That's moving up! :) Looking forward to those 2X projects! You might want to reconsider insulating the floor slab, since it will be a huge source of cooling during the summer from the ground beneath. And heat loss through a slab during the winter is somewhere around 1%, it's hard to justify the expense. Better to take the rigid insulation you would have used on the floor and put it on the ceiling, where the bulk of the heat loss / gain happens. Insulating the block stub wall is a good idea, though, and I did the in mine on the outside and inside.
@JustinDepew6 жыл бұрын
I keep going back and forth on the floor. I get the benefits of having the slab since the ground is always a stable temp. But what throws me off is that I'm only going to control 1/3 of the slab, and the other 2/3 of the slab will still be open to outside air...seems like it would be a big heat sink
@JohnHeisz6 жыл бұрын
Concrete is not a very effective conductor of heat, so that shouldn't be a significant factor. I'd be looking more at the cooling benefits, since you will likely want to use the shop more during the summer - I know I do, and mine stays a full 10 degrees C cooler than it is outdoors on the hottest days. In the winter, I only heat it up to a constant 5 degrees C, but that's for roughly just 3 months out of the year.

Glad to see you back! Looks like you've got a solid start. Check the walls to see if they're insulated - looks like it's insulated only on the house wall - that will likely help with heat too. Perhaps think about shade trees to block some direct sun on the garage? (Not pine, they'll spread out horizontally and break your floor - that's my problem ATM).
@JustinDepew6 жыл бұрын
Thanks Chris, I think all walls are insulated so that's a good start.

Hey John really like the upgrade. You said you are going to build a wall with a sliding patio door. You may want to consider a double French door. That would give you about 5-6 feet of walk space to in and out of carrying parts vs 30-36 inches. Just a thought and great video. Looking forward to the upgrades.
@JustinDepew6 жыл бұрын
Hi Daryl, I'm actually thinking about of making a double sliding door so I get the benefits of a large opening, but I won't have to worry about keeping the floor space clear for the French door panels to swing.

Was in the trades for about 3-decades. Noticed from about 1990-2010, home colors went from warm tones to the sterile with a lot of white walls and dark, wall furniture that pops out. Just an observation.

For the door why not do something like a large sliding insulated door, something along the lines of the barn style doors they do on those fixer upper shows or better yet make something like French doors that swing into the garage as close to fully open as possible and then you can use the wall space to hang tools

Let me suggest using a metal rollup door to allow a large opening between your shop and the parking area. I used one to separate my shop from the rest of my barn. I also used one on my garden shed. It keeps the wall space useable. Just a suggestion.

I would suggest a doublke door setup instead of a sliding patio door, bevause it will endup aggrevating you and your wife to pull and push a heavy glass goor everytime to get to your cars. Passing thru a regular door is much easier, plus the other door can be opened when needed, and the can both be full view double-pane insulated low-e glass so you'll still have the benefit of all that light coming thru and the thermo-protection. Your miter saw can still be located just to the right of it, with a flip up wing on the left. Locate the stationary door on the right side, and the operational door on the left, so you can keep the wing up at all times. An LED-4foot-3000 lumen at Home Deoit is only $15, with 4 of those you'll have plenty of light at $60. They each have a plug on the end so they can be daisy-chained together, and they won't require hardly any electricity to run. Since you have a 10' ceiling, an air filter could be helpful. These are just my 2 cents worth of ideas. Congratulations on your upgrade.
@JustinDepew6 жыл бұрын
Thanks for your thoughts. The reason I was thinking of a sliding door was I'm not sure if there will be room to swing open a double door with the cars parked there. Also one thing I forgot to mention in the video is I was thinking maybe there needs to be another side door added to the garage so that we don't have to go through two doors to get to the cars.
@ginoasci6 жыл бұрын
Justin Depew: i don't know what you mean by another sliding door so you don't have to go thru two doors to get to the cars. But the swing door can open into the shop, and locate the swing door in the center of the garage so the door opens inbetween the cars, and the stationary door can be located to the left infront of the Miada, that way the mitersaw can still be against that wall, just over to the right a little. You will never be able to bring 27 foot lumber into that shop, so locating the mitersaw exactly in the middle is not usefull anyway. I have limited room on the right of my mitersaw, so when cutting long boards, i use a cordless 5 1/2" saw and leave it 1/2" longer on all the boards, and finish the cuts with the miter saw. It works put great, plus youll be able to cut longer boards if the saw is a little closer to one side. If your shop is 27 feet acrpss, the half way point is 13 1/2 feet, lets say you locate the saw 3 feet to the right, now you can cut a board thats 16 1/2 feet long because it won't hit the wall. Rough cutting long boards and finishing them off with the mitersaw works great. Another idea is building a shelf over the door casing from one side all the way to the other for storage. 120" ceiling height minus 84" for the door plus the top casing equals 36" of vertcal space, by a 27 foot length. You can put a few shelves up there and store long boards, and/or what ever else you want. That's 81 square feet of storage. It's like a huge closet located over head out of your way and it utilizes dead space. If that's not enough, build shelves all the way around the whole shop up there, and just keep a light 6 foot aluminum ladder to comfortably get your stuff. Sometimes it's more fun organizing a shop than doing projects. I built reversable kitchen style cabinets for my shop, with a french cleat at both ends, so they can be flipped to change which way the door opens, and the shelf brackets are just clips so they can be installed where ever and in both directions, plus they can always be moved, and swap places with each other. Completely versitle. You don't even have to build cabinets, and just install the cleats on the kitchen cabinets you have there. Just make sure they are on there tight, because store bought cabinets are usually not plywood sides, and need reinforcement. I also applied soft spongy weather stripping to keep them dust free. The self closing hinges keep the closed. Just some ideas i used that you might like. I'm confident that whatever ypu do will work out great. I'll watch for your videos. Good luck.

Great new work shop space. Congratulations. Is it possible to make/place an overhead door between the car parking place and your shop. Not over the whole width but half of it (like for a one car garage). It does not take floor space and can be remote controlled. I hope you never cancell the videos of your appartment-workshop. There are so many clever things in them.

1st don't tell my wife that cars go in the garage. When you heat it Do Not use an un-vented gas heater they put way to much Carbon monoxide into the space as well as humility, I made that mistake rusted my tools badly. Concatenate on sealing air leakage and ceiling insulation before thinking about the floor. I'm in NE Illinois I have a standard slab garage it's fine.
