I bought a new Tamron 150-600mm lens for wildlife photography. But after the first photo shoot, I could tell something was very wrong. In this video I show how I tested the lens using the Datacolor SpyderLENSCAL autofocus calibration aid in the hopes of fixing the problem by setting autofocus micro-adjustments.
Do you own the Tamron 150-600mm lens? I'd love to hear your feelings about the lens and if you are happy with the results, especially for wildlife photography.
Of course, there are many things that can cause a photo to be out of focus. You shouldn't go blaming the lens immediately! Here are some things to check first:

*UPDATE* A few months ago I purchased a used Canon 500mm F4L and it is wildly superior to the Tamron lens I had. I get consistent super sharp photos. It cost a fair bit more than the Tamron, but the results are worth it. To me, any amount spent on a lens that does not give consistent sharp results is too much. I had two copies of the Tamron and the second replacement lens was also very poor but it behaved differently than the first one. So I have no confidence in the quality control of the Tamron lens. I will say that about half of the people I talk to say their lens is excellent and the other half say their lens is terrible like mine. It's a coin toss. But I am much happier with my Canon 500mm that I know I can rely on.

@@canonlensesandcameras4425 auto focus stops working now and then, and sometimes when the object is in focus the auto focus gets it completely out of focus. My guess is, it doesn’t work very well with Eos R and the EF/RF adapter. Even when you know you have an object perfectly in focus the result is out of focus in the post, you can’t trust the lens so you need to take like 5-10 shots and hope some is in focus. I have never had any issues with Sigma or Canon lenses.

Was the image stabilization on on the lens? When I shoot with my tripod I turn it off because I noticed I was getting blurry photos even at high shutter speed. I turn it on when I just use hand held and I get crisp shots. This lens is wonderful.
@FrankyboyLegend
@FrankyboyLegend 4 жыл бұрын
I shoot handheld and find I best turn it off for high shutter speeds (>1/1000) or use mode 2 (panning) but often I don't have the time to do so. They should have just added panning detection on mode 1 as I find it unassuring when the viewfinder isn't stabilized. I also find that the VC doesn't do well with bursts at low shutter speeds, adding smearing or softness in every few images (perhaps the moving VC element is adding some diffraction). I've also had an intermittent issue where VC fails when I keep spamming the half-press and the best way to fix this is to turn off my camera and re-mount the lens.

You probably have a “bad” copy. Send it back for an exchange, if you want. Yes, I realize this video is old. However, your focus testing technique is highly flawed. You should be testing at 25-50x the focal length, not some random distance of your choosing. You want the test target to fill the frame. When I test super telephoto lenses, I use a target that is four feet across. Using the shutter delay was good. You should have also used mirror lockup. Mirror lockup canmake a big difference when testing at super telephoto focal lengths. I think you should have dialed in a shutter speed of at least 1/1000. You should also take at least 5-10 test shots at each focal length and distance, which you use to calculate an average result. If your multiple shots using the same focal length and distance are giving you results that are all over the place, then that should raise a red flag that you might be doing something wrong. You should have bought the docking port accessory. The software to talk to the lens includes focus testing procedures that tell you what focal lengths and distances to use.

Oh, you're right, good catch! I should have done that. However, I was using pretty fast shutter speeds because it was a bright day so the photos still should have been okay. Not necessarily so. I bought this G2 version for going on an African safari. I was in a small group of 7, within the group were the Sigma Sport version and the cheaper Sigma version plus 2 Canon 100-400 mk 1. Each night we viewed on a 27in Imac. The team leader would mix the photos up so nebody new which photographer took any shot. As we were in either 1 or 2 jeeps and had to stick to the roads, so many photos were similar as we were so close together inside the jeep, we were not allowed outside. Nobody could determine on that 27in screen the difference. The 2 Canon lenses had to be magnified to reach the 600mm reach of the other lenses, which they did admirably. Now we were out in the cold early morning , scorching mid day sun, dust and numerous rain falls. Only the cheaper Sigma had no weather sealing, The Tamron has partial sealing, while the Sigma Sport is completely weather sealed, as are the 2 L Canon lenses, There were no problems with any of the lenses with this regard. I later bought the Canon 100-400 L mk 2 and the mk 3 1.4 extender, and it was superior to the Tamron but at twice the price, the difference only the individual can decide whether it was worth it, I did sell the Tamron and kept the canon , because at the time I could afford it. The quality of the Tamron was outstanding and i would recommend to anyone. Its unfair to compare to lenses costing 3/4/5 times as much. I used the tamron on various canon Bodies an 80D so the crop factor would give me an increase magnification a 6D and a 5Dmk4. It worked falwlessly on all I month in the Kruger Nat Park, then another later in Namibia. Manual focus worked better due to al the brush /trees etc surrounding the animals interfering. I now use the Canon R8. the autofocus is mind blowing with the various eye detecting modes, Im sure the Tamron would be ideal, and im actually looking right now at that possibility and i still have an RF 100-400. The Tamron G2 is NOT a "Cheap" lens, cheap being a relative term, compared to a Canon 500mm f4 yes its cheap, but i dont have to put my wife out on the streets to pay for it

I have the 150-600 g2 for two months. Using it on Nikon D7500 and Z6 via FTZ. The lens focuses great on both cameras, no issues at all. Shooting with such a long lens has some tricks and getting used to it is a certain learning curve for sure. My only complaint is the lens is sharp closed to 7.1 or better 8.0. At 6.3 it's a bit soft most of the time but otherwise it's focusing very precisely. I'll think for upgrade once I see what's the new Z 200-600 gonna be and maybe the coming 800mm PF if priced under 10 000.

My experience with 3:rd party lenses on Canon is exactly that. Inconsistent focus. And I have owned 5DmkIV, 7DmkII and 70D. All exhibit the same behaviour. Didn't matter if it was Sigma or Tamron. Once I switched to Canon lenses, all was fine. I got the Sigma 150-600C to work fairly well but that was an exception. Tried quite a heap of lenses. 50mm art, 16-35 art, Tamron 100-400, Sigma 150-600 sport and a few more. Nothing worked consistently. Now I shoot Nikon because I got tired of it. An old D610. And behold... all Sigma and Tamrons focus fine.

This is not a lens I would use on an APS-C camera, from tests I've seen it's clearly designed for FF sensors and doesn't perform well on a crop sensor. Expecting to get 960mm FF equiv with a "cheap" lens is kinda pushing it. I'd say that up to 300mm an APS-C sensor will perform okay, but not at double that. I'd pair this with a 5Dmk2 or later, it's cheaper than a 7Dmk2 and will give you back aperture and reduced sensor noise. I shoot a 55-250 on a 50D and it's always a challenge when light starts to go away, the noise ramps up much more quickly than the aforementioned 5D.

I have heard that as well, that this lens doesn't perform well on a crop sensor camera. But, the 5D Mk II only does 3.9 frames per second. That sucks!! The 7D Mk II does 10. That's a massive difference when it comes to wildlife photography. Thanks for the information though, it's great to get this kind of confirmation about pairing lenses and cameras.

However, each year for the last 3 years, I've had to pack it up and send to Tamron Service center because the autofocus stopped working. They say they clean the mechanism (dust) and send it back. Since it has 7yr warranty so it only costs shipping, time, and annoyance. I really am not a heavy user and do not use it in dusty/dirty conditions, soperhaps this speaks to the quality of Tamron lenses. I plan to get rid of it soon as don't want to have this issue when it goes off warranty.

My 85MM G2 is one of the very best lenses I have ever used. The Calibration of your copy was obviously very off from the start and really apparent at 65 ft. I would have at that point tried to calibrate the focus point to zero before moving to a greater distance and longer focal lengths and you may have found the focus at 600mm at 100ft and fine tuned it better at that point. Just a thought. I'm glad you found a lens your happy with though. Happy shooting to ya !

I spent quite some time calibrating my 150-600 G2 Nikon mount with the tap-in console a few months ago. It took numerous iterations, but it is possible to nail it down. Infinite focus at 600mm is a tough one to nail down and is even more trial and error than the rest since atmospheric distortions can cause issues. I had focusing problems with the Tamron G2 where it simply would not autofocus at close distances without manual assistance. In addition, with close objects, it was so far out of focus there was insufficient microadjustment on my 70D to compensate. At long distances, however, focus was okay. I sent mine back and got a Sigma 150-600 contemporary instead and have been very happy indeed with it (it focuses faster and without the problems of the Tamron and gives far far better image quality at the edges). I would add that if you wanted to stick with the Tamron, send your lens to Tamron with your camera and they should adjust your lens to suit the camera under warranty.

Thanks for the feedback Mick. No, I don't have my heart set on Tamron by any means. I got my replacement lens and it also had focus issues - albeit different focus issues, not the same ones! And interesting to note that the problem you encountered with the same lens was also a focus issue, but again not the same focus issue. Now I can't decide whether to try the Sigma Contemporary or skip over it for the Sigma Sport. Or just stick with what I'm doing and crop.

Anne I researched this to death reading lots of written and youtube reviews. The sport is very niche. If you want a larger aperture over a greater focal range (but not at 600mm), if you want a lens which is designed to be weather proof and manhandled then the sport is the one. However, optically it is not much better than the contemporary. Also it is about another 1Kg (2lb 3oz) heavier and a lot more expensive. I hope this helps.

I wasn't too happy about it at the time but I've grown to like both lenses. But with the copy I had, I had to move the micro focus adjustment all the way to the extreme end and it still wasn't enough! Most of the time you do not have do it, but yes sometimes you do. Sometimes the focus can be off just a little bit and you have to calibrate your lens to make it just right. But I have to say it really annoys me that this is my job. I think we as photographers already have enough jobs - like not only the actual photography, but also website development, marketing, graphic design, book layouts, video editing and on and on depending on what you do in your business. But now I have to calibrate my lenses too? I seriously think this job belongs to the people who make the lenses. Sure, a lens may have to be different for various camera bodies, but I don't see how that should my problem. I think we should be able to order a lens, say what camera body we're planning on putting it on, and have it come properly calibrated. I'm not sure if this job belongs to Canon or Tamron, but I don't think it should belong to me.

Just out of interest, since neither the Video, or its description failed to state it so. Is this the Original eleven Herbs, and Spices, or is it this superior G2 version? That you were reviewing? The way I understood it the older version of this Lens wasn't that great to begin with. This confusion might go some way to explaining some of the hate in here. That said Screwy Lenses are unfortunately a thing, so yeah there's that. But, it would be great to know exactly which version you were testing at the time. The reason, why I went with this Lens (i.e. the G2 variant.), instead of the Sigma Contemporary (Which would have been 400€s cheaper), was two-fold one was the Arca Swiss Mount. (Whoopdedoo), and the little fact that this Lens should be 100% weather sealed. (Not just a dinky little gasket on its behind. Was enough to convince me. Even this video is pretty old, I will comment anyway. So a lens so cheap like this obviously won't have great quality control. The 100-400 is 2x as much (in my country) than this, and that only goes to 400. Also, you can easily calibrate Tamron lens with the tap in console, which is 50 bucks or something. Comparing it to the Canon 500 F4 also is something like saying "Every car which is not a Ferrari sucks". This lens is a beast in terms of price to performance, but yes, it needs some adjustments. Thanks, I know how to use the gear lol. I did have the top in console. But yes, I agree that a lens at this price range does not have good quality control, which was evident. My first experience with Tamron wasn't good. Granted my camera was older (Rebel XT) but I've never had any problems with it ever. Anyways, I bought a wide angle Tamron lens for it this past Oct? and after two clicks of the shutter, I got and Err 99 message on my camera. Turned the camera off/on and same thing so I sent the lens back for another copy. Same thing with the replacement. Fast forward a bit. I'm with an 80D and Sigma 100-300 f/4 and can"t get it to nail focus even after trying to calibrate. So I started looking at the Tamron 150-600 G2 and Canon's 100-400 as a replacement to the old Sigma. This video has convinced to me to make my first experience with Tamron my last. This video was excellent for me since I have recently had a high interest in purchasing the same lens. The results you have gotten definitely tell me why the Tamron has the Tap-In console for adjusting the firmware to calibrate the focus in the firmware. I've never purchased a lens that was not built from the same manufacturer as my camera body but given all the variations in processors and camera models, makes me think that there is a strong risk of getting a 3rd party lens that is not optimized to perform spot on auto focus tasks at different distances. I would think a lens with this type of range would be a higher risk candidate. The cost of this lens is about 10 times less if I would purchase one from the same manufacturer as my camera body, which is why I was strongly considering purchasing it. Now I know from your video that if I choose to go this route that it is highly likely that I'm going to need to consider purchasing the Tap-in console.

I think it is such a cop out when people say its going to be soft at 600, try 400. I think the whole point for most people is to have that 400-600 range. Otherwise, just get a 100-400! Or a 400mm prime. If they can't make it be sharp at 600 then they shouldn't make a 600. Just my thoughts ... Hope your replacement lens was better.

I did get another one and it was also terrible, but for totally different reasons, which doesn't give me a lot of confidence in their quality control. Since then I got a used Canon 500mm prime and it is outstanding. It does seem like the people who have success with their Tamron are pairing it with a Nikon and not a Canon. Just something I've noticed in all these comments.

Hey thanks Anne! Sorry I was lazy and didn't look thru your videos for the follow up. I have 5DMKIII with Canon 28-300. I got that lens for a trip to Yellowstone. I live in Alaska, we live on a lake and have a nesting pair of bald eagles but they're a couple of hundred yards away. The pair sit on a tree branch every day together. I was thinking that 600 would be the ticket for some better shots. Your review is/was the first one that had anything negative to say about the Tamron. Can't argue with your pics. Think I will look at the Canon 100-400. I wish Canon would get in on the game with something like a 300-600. You would have been in heaven when the ice went out on our lake. Had 10 bald eagles on the ice and as the ice went out they started fishing. It was truly amazing to watch that many eagles working. I never get tired of seeing them. Thanks again for your reply, truly appreciate it. Take care!

Mine worked great on my 5D Mk IV till I had to send in the 5D for a new main board. When it came back the lens was slightly out of focus. I was told by Canon that a new main board required recalibration of the CAMERA. Apparently the recalibration is only as good as the tech doing it. I ended up buying calibration software and calibrating the lens to match the camera.The lens is now tack sharp on the camera at all ranges.

Well, they did mention both the Sigma and Tamron had AF problems but didn't really specify. Mine sometimes misfocuses around 20m but not always. I found the Tap-In too tedious and unreliable to adjust compared to AFMA in a camera (unfortunately I've currently had to revert to a camera without it). It also seems to me like the focus dial is uneven and there might be some kind of uneven sharpness at certain focusing distances depending on lighting...

I've used the Tamron 150-600 G2 for a few years now, currently paired with a Nikon D850. I will start off by saying, this lens is greedy for light. It's a poor performer in low light situations, and of course a lot of animals spend much of their day in poorly lit places. In good light, the auto focus performs well enough for my needs, and photos turn out very well (I did notice an upgrade in quality when moving from a D3400 to the D850 I have now, so the image sensor in the body does make a difference as well). Also consider distance. Somewhere in the 50-100 yard range, I notice a sharp decrease in image quality. My conclusion is that as long as you're willing to work within this lens's limitations with light and distance, it is a great lens for the price. No, a photo of a Green-winged Teal at 200 yards is probably going to turn out grainy or blurry. A photo of an American Redstart at 20 yards in good light can look like a wall hanger, on the other hand. The Nikon 200-500 is probably the best consumer grade lens for Nikon FX/DX systems, but when I'm taking photos of 5" Warblers high up in the trees, I want every bit of magnification I get from the additional focal length, so I stand by my Tamron. Practice makes perfect, keep shooting!

@annemckinnell
@annemckinnell 4 жыл бұрын
In my experience, it has never happened when I buy a new Canon lens. However sometimes after long term use I have to recalibrate my Canon lenses. I guess they get banged around a bit when I'm travelling. But I also rent Canon lenses quite often and I've never had to calibrate one of those. I don't have a lot of experience with third party lenses, but my understanding is that they require calibration more often, especially the telephotos. It's a good idea to have one of these little gadgets in case you have to do it, but the process is tedious!

What a terrible experience. Sony just came out with a 200-600mm lens which on your Sony crop sensor would be amazing. I was just about to buy the 100-400 with a 1.4 converter but now I’m not sure what todo. Nice to have choices though.

I saw that the new Sony came out, but it's $2,000! Plus, if I was going to do wildlife with my Sony, I would also need a 70-200, and probably a new body since mine is pretty old ... it's an investment. But I do love the mirrorless for landscapes. One day I'm sure I'll make the switch. The other thing is that I use my Canon 7D on the boat a lot and it gets kicked around. I don't think a mirrorless could take the abuse my dslr takes. But if you haven't already invested in big dslr lenses, I would definitely consider the new Sony lens too. Let me know how it works out if you get one!!

Interestingly I have the same problem with a Tamron 70-300. It front focuses but the amount it does it by varies with focal length. Since I mostly use it at 300mm I micro adjusted to fix that, but then found when I used it at the lower end it started back focussing! It's a complete piece of junk, but I live with it for now as it cost me hardly anything. I suspect quality control at Tamron HQ for their lower quality lenses goes about as far as "did you tighten all the screws?".

@annemckinnell
@annemckinnell 4 жыл бұрын
Well, that's how you test if a lens is working properly. You should be able to make the focus point sharp when shooting wide open. If you can't get anything sharp wide open, then something is wrong with either the lens or the technique. In the field, if I want an entire bird's body to be sharp, then yes I would stop it down. But I don't want to HAVE to do that all the time to get something sharp. Sometimes in low light situations you have to shoot wide open.

@annemckinnell
@annemckinnell 4 жыл бұрын
Hmm good question! I don't think it really matters that much because you are going to look at whether the camera is front focussing or back focussing. So say you measure 20 feet. It doesn't really matter if it turns out to really be 19ft, you'll still see whether the camera is front focussing or back focussing using the numbers on the ruler. I hope that makes sense. Now if you are comparing 20ft with 100ft, that's different.

Both are great fun to shoot with via the focus peaking capability of the Z6. My D7100 handles most sports and wildlife via the old zoom that I have, but was looking to get even more serious about bird photography since there's a "city hawk" living in the park across the street from my home. So, very disappointed that the lens I got was a lemon. My other Sigma, a 10-20mm f3.5 that is a great lens that always gets the shot for my real estate imagery. So maybe return the 🍋 and get another?
