Love your ep-ing videos! When I started exclusive pumping with my second daughter (who just turned 5 😢), no one talked about it. She had lost 11oz after birth and remained the same weight for about 2.5 weeks. Near the end of her first month, we had been back and forth to the pediatrician for weight checks, and they were recommending supplementation. I knew from my experience with my first that if I supplemented with formula, my supply wouldn't be strong enough, so I began nursing, pumping & then bottle feeding, which I then switched to exclusive pumping, cutting out nursing. The pediatrician thought I was a little crazy for the extra work, but I was desperate for her to get breastmilk. I hope that moms who find themselves in similar situations, will find your videos, because they are so helpful, and I feel like it's hard to find lactation specialists who aren't anti bottle (at least in my experience). On a separate note, how did you single pump for an hour total? (I think you said a half hour on each side). I switched my 2 year old to formula when she was 8 months old (before she switched to regular milk @ 1 year). I was getting to the point where I felt like I was always pumping on the go, and with an oversupply (and no freezer space), I was dumping a lot of milk, so it felt like a waste of time. Do you think you could get away with only pumping one side at a time? Like every 3 hrs, and switch sides? I don't know if that would result in a greater chance of mastitis. Also, I'm completely with you on the medela ice packs. I had ones that came with my ameda purely yours, and they were junk. They melted so incredibly fast!

What a journey momma! Ours sound really similar too. I agree with you that the healthcare professionals in our area didn't understand my decision to exclusively pump. I think the only person who did was this nurse I had in post-op who pumped for her baby. I'm hoping that over the years they'll become more open minded. I was very happy with my course that I took to become a breastfeeding specialist because they utmost concern was the parent's mental/emotional health, then the consumption of breast milk, and finally (if the mother wanted to) getting baby to breast. I would start on one side and focus on that. I made sure to empty one side then I moved on to the other one. I think it may be possible but like you said it may set you up for a lot of complications. It wouldn't be as easy I think in the long run, especially with an oversupply. Single pumping typically means more work for people but for me it meant less work so you could always give that a shot. Love those Medela ice packs!!

I would much rather pump both breast with a stronger sunction for a short 20 mins but go longer between pumping sesh like instead of 3 hours, Id pump every 5 hours. But my supply is decent, I cant create a stash but each pump is great for 3 -5 feedings. In the morning normally id do 1 power pump sesh. 1 boob at a time sounds very risky to me but idk. I would hate to get mastitis😭

I laughed when you talked about using your boobs as a bottle warmer! My youngest was hospitalized at a week old and I had to exclusively pump. Weirdly enough there was not hot water from the tap in her hospital room, I’d have to go down the hall just for hot water! Did the boob trick so much during our stay lol.

What are some things you might suggest for moving to a developing country? How to keep cold while in villages during the day? I’m looking to keep it as simple as possible because I know I’ll need to pack all of these things. Thank you!

I would make sure you’ve got a fridge with a freezer wherever you’ll be staying overnight. For during the day I would see about getting a cooler tote to carry around. Then also one of those lunch bags where you can freeze the entire thing. And some really thick ice packs like the Medela ones in my Amazon shop. All of that should keep your breast milk good during the day while you’re out. When you’re pumping while you’re out I’d just bring the one bottle to put on the pump and collect the milk. Pour everything into breastmilk storage bags. It’s easier to chill the milk that way and less bulk to carry around!

How did you wean? I have so much milk supply I want to prepare to wean when my baby’s a bit older.... I only seem to find advices on how to produce more. Also how is it that single pumping helped with over supply? Because if I don’t pump I get engorgement/ mastitis and pain.....

I thought I mentioned it in this video. But if I didn’t, I like to have extra storage bags and pour the milk into one. Then take a cup of hot water and put the breast milk storage bag in it. Keep an eye on it because it heats super fast this way and doesn’t take much time at all. Quicker than heating bottle and milk!

I’m not sure where you live momma and I’m not sure of the TSA regulations even if you lived in the states like I do. You should be able to look up your transportations guidelines for breast milk! If they allow liquid breast milk I don’t know why they wouldn’t allow frozen but again I can’t say for sure. I’m sorry I’m not more help!

if you refrigerate the breastmilk.. how long will it stay fresh?

In the refrigerator it can be good up to 5-7 days for a full term, healthy infant!
