Mommas! In the hospital my nurse and I used the Medela pump. It had ALOT of parts. I walked away with a kitchen size trash bag of parts they gave me. Target did not have the Medela, so my husband got the EVENFLO just for me to look at since I had my mind made up to get the Medela. When he got home, I had to use it because I was so engorged and needed a release. Needless to say, I’ve never looked back. It is the EASIEST pump, the parts are so simple and to clean after each session only takes < 1 minute. I easily take it room to room and even have used it in the car. I would highly recommend, especially for new mothers. We need simplicity!

Great video and I completely agree with your recommendation about using the Haakaa early on and how and when to use the electric pump. I just wanted to add that the hospital grade pumps aren't necessarily stronger than the single user pumps. But they're designed to be used by many different people (cleaning in between) and have dual motors and programs with pre-settings to help stimulate production. Those are available for rent if mom and baby are separated or baby is unable to latch for medical reasons.

Bridget, my lactation consultant says that the Hakas SEEM to work really well, but in fact only pull out the fore-milk (watery part of milk containing lactose which can be more irritating to baby’s belly), and doesn’t do as well at pulling out the hind-milk (the fattier milk that contains lactase, the enzyme that breaks down the lactose.)

Hi bridget! So i heard a tip from someone... to avoid continuously washing your pump parts after every session, one can put the parts in a ziplock bag and put them in the fridge. Then just wash the parts at the end of that day. Have you heard of this? Idk if it's real or not.

Not sure if this is true or accurate but I had a l&d nurse tell me to do this.

Many moms do this. It is NOT the best practices but you can do it safely by putting all the parts that come in contact with your milk in a large ziplock bag after pumping in the refrigerator (towards the back of the fridge) and then washing parts and sterilizing once a day. My breastfeeding-specific channel might help support your breastfeeding experience. All the best to you.

Hi Bridget! I'm a first time mom due in a couple weeks and I've really been loving your videos; so glad I found your channel! I'm going to be lucky enough to be a stay-at-home mom and definitely plan on breastfeeding, but I want to give my husband the option of feeding baby as well. Will the haakaa be enough to maybe give him one feeding a day? Is it only useful for catching unused milk, or will I be able to express milk while baby isn't on the other breast? Can I start using the haakaa right away, or should I wait a few weeks? Thanks; love your helpful spirit!
@BridgetTeyler5 жыл бұрын
It depends! For some women the Haakaa does give them enough milk for a feeding if they're using it on both sides. If you're going to use it while you nurse though, you're probably only going to use it on one side, so it might take a couple feedings to build up enough for a whole feeding. Also remember that at the beginning especially you want to make sure you're removing milk from your breasts at least every 3 hours ish. So if your hubby takes over one of those feedings, you probably should still pump or hand express so your body is still being told to produce plenty of milk and to avoid engorgement!

If I have one of those milk bags to freeze but I only get a little bit of milk at a time, how long can I wait in order to collect more milk in the same bag before storing it away in the freezer?

One part I didn’t get when you placed your milk in the freezer what must you do when u ready to use the milk? To unfreeze

Hey Bridget, is it okay to express milk from different pumping sessions? So say I pump at 8am for example and than again at 1pm can I mix the milk in the same bottle/bag from 2 different sessions? ❤
@shannonburke55654 жыл бұрын
I have heard that as long as they are both the same temperature then its okay. So like if you put your morning milk in the fridge put your afternoon milk in the fridge before you mix them
@louisen68344 жыл бұрын
Yes mixing milk is ok and should be the same temperature. Rules of 6, breastmilk is good 6 hours at room temp, 6 days in the fridge and 6 months in the freezer. So you can create a big bottle from multiple times in the day or over a few days if needed 😊

IBCLC here. Breast milk storage is all about time and temperature. You ONLY want to mix breastmilk that is at the same temperature. Best milk containers are glass and silicone. You can pump and leave your express milk at room temperature for 4-hrs and then pump again (3-hrs after the last pumping session) combine both and then put toward the the back of the fridge to avoid temperature fluctuations. My breastfeeding-specific channel might help support your breastfeeding experience. All the best to you.

So excited to try the haakaa this time around. I'm hoping it makes some kind of difference. I always end up supplementing since my milk takes forever to come in, I have horrible success with all the pumps I've tried, and hate being stuck in a chair attached to something all the time. My brain is really dark and slow for at least the first few months, and it's a terrible time for problem solving all this. I do try to make up for it with a good goat milk formula and at least 18 months of breastfeeding. I'll probably also break out the old Medela and see if any of these tips help.

HI Bridget! First time mum here :-) Such an informative video, watched this because I didn't know where to start with milk supply and pumping (going back to work in a month or so) and this is super helpful! Question: I already have a Hakaa, but no electric pump yet. What about combining the Hakaa and a Medela Swing Flex (only on one side)? Would this work too or will this not express enough during a 9-5 work day? Thanks and keep up the great videos!!

You have improved on your video quality sooo much since this. The number of “ums” in this video is driving me too crazy 😂 but I have never noticed this in your new videos 😊

What do you recommend for when you need to top up after breastfeeding? How much ml’s? How often top up? My doctor recommended supplementing/topping up to increase my baby’s weight He usually breastfeeds for 20-30 mins

I was wondering if you only pumped like 1 oz. do you keep it in one bag and put into freezer? Or how do you add multiple pump volumes into one bag?
@carrierequejo43574 жыл бұрын
keepinitreal I only pump 1-2 oz and I keep it in the fridge until I can combine 2-3 sessions to freeze 4-5 oz at a time. Hope that helps!
@PrenatalYini4 жыл бұрын
You can leave expressed milk at room temperature for 4 hours then you can combine it with freshly pumped milk. Once combined you can put it in the BACK of the fridge to prevent temperature fluctuations. My breastfeeding-specific channel might help support your breastfeeding experience. All the best to you.

@@carrierequejo4357 You can leave it at room temperature for 4-hrs until you pump again. Never combine milk that have different temperatures. My breastfeeding-specific channel might help support your breastfeeding experience. All the best to you.

The manual pump that you showed is what I'm using and I exclusively breastfeed but want to store for when I go back to work but I'm only getting half an once per session. Any advice on how I can get more? Do I need to use an electric pump instead or is it possible with the manual pump

I wish someone had told me to start before 6 weeks. I had so much milk early on and was pumping for awhile, having 3-4 ounces on one side while baby fed on the other at times. Then people told me I was pumping too soon and could get problems with over-supply. Now my baby is 8 months and I'm working so hard to try to have 'enough' milk plus a little extra.

Thanks for the how-to on the Medela Pump in Style! First time mom here and 37 weeks along so this is very helpful! When you are pumping and massaging/squeezing your breast, do you need to hold the flange in place to keep it from disconnecting from the nipple, or does it stay attached from the suction?
@BridgetTeyler5 жыл бұрын
When you're massaging and compressing it should be around the flange so that the suction doesn't break. Sometimes during the compressions the suction does break briefly, but it shouldn't happen often. If it does keep happening, you're probably squeezing too close to the nipple and just need to back your hands up a little bit!

Hi. Thanks for the fantastic video. When feeding baby with expressed milk do we heat up the milk? If yes, how?
@sarahbrisebois57944 жыл бұрын
Hi, we heat up a glass of water in the microwave for 40sec then put the bottle in it to warm for a couple minutes.
